I know RTD likes to keep it light at Xmas but those Goblins singing, it's way too cute and childish for my liking.
I've always thought 10 - 12 is probably the youngest age for the show to cater for, in terms of how light the show can go. This whole goblins theme feels very kindergarten, like the sort of thing a 5 year old would watch.
I've loved the weird and slightly twisted style of the last 2 specials but this feels like a massive slide down the dark/light scale.
Maybe I'm being too harsh, but I really disliked that Goblin song sequence, it massively jarred for me. I hope in the context of the episode it's a meta statement about how terrible that kind of sub Disney commercial trash can be.

I'm just hoping - away from any Goblin stuff - to fall even harder for Ncuti's Doctor and for Millie. I don't know her work but two people from work are now gonna check Who out for her, not Ncuti, RTD or the budget increase, but because Millie apparently was wonderful in Coronation Street. Worked well when Jenna Coleman came from the soaps - Emmerdale and Waterloo Road. Any Clara character issues aside, I didn't see criticisms of her as a performer. If Millie and Ncuti hit it off? That'll my my Christmas ep takeaway.

Probably the one notorious fan I thought would hate yer Goblin Song...loved it! Ian Levine says it's "a bit of hard funk" and "about as un-Disney as it's possible to get".

I think it's time for me to finally jump ship. What the hell are they doing with Doctor Who? Whatever it is, it's evidently working.

The Itunes live charts - while they often sync up for major artists like Taylor Swift or Olivia Rodrigo - don't count for much in the official charts as they favour whatever has just landed and had plays in the first 24 hours, not accounting for drop-off. For every Who fan spinning Goblin Song, the streams for the traditional faves - Wizzard, Mariah, Slade et al - will be much higher. The Pogues and Kirsty are faves for Christmas #1, Creator Universe (a TikTok "supergroup") and Wham are the only others looking remotely like a challenge. I'd be surprised if Goblin gets anywhere near the top spot on the real chart. Top 10 would be an achievement, Top 5 quite remarkable. Realistically? It won't get anywhere near that. Top 40 maybe. I think we'd know if the song was on course to do that well - the BBC bashing outlets like The Mail would have "BBC Song About Eating Babies Outcry" headlines, ignoring the Children In Need proceeds!

I listen to The Chris Moyles Show on Radio X in the morning and Dom has had a couple of singles that they’ve successfully pushed to number 1 on iTunes for two or three days running and neither have made it to The Official Top 40. Only on the Big Top 40, that Global run and air on Capital, which doesn’t really count towards accolades and the like.
Not to rubbish The Goblin Song, of course, but the money it’s making for Children in Need via iTunes purchases is the main thing, I think.

Not gonna lie, after The Giggle, I lost my enthusiasm for RTD2 but that clip of The Goblin Song is kinda winning me back over...

They're bloody nice too! But once a year is about as often as I can have one. It came up on QI a few years back that they were a myth and only done for PR...I could name 5 chippies that sell them, so sorry Sandi and co, and Millie from her reaction, they're very real. And they're always served battered. A friend of mine swears deep friend Crunchies are manna from above. But the Mars is the one you'll get as standard.

I've just realised the song is raising money for children in need, so I whole heartedly apologise for my previous criticism. I hope it raises plenty of money for a very worthy cause. Christmas is a time for children and families, and also a time for grumpy middle age men to lighten the f up!
