Haven’t been enamoured by the Fifth Doctor output since the move to box sets - probably not helped by him having an incredible final few years in the main range - but I’m very fond of the Season 19 team. I think the Dream Crabs are great, so hope they’re utilised well here, and I like the 2 part / 4 part split. How interesting, because I feel that his sets have been the best of the core MR Doctors (5,6,7) since the move to boxsets. I have been seriously underwhelmed byt the 6th and 7th Doctor output over the last few years. But glad to hear that even not loving his recent stories, you're looking forward to these. I certainly am! I agree that they've been the best of the MR Doctors, but for me fall below the Season 19, Shadow of the Daleks and Marc run of the main range. I love the lower stakes, character driven direction, but feel they've had issues with crafting a plot for the running length. Hoping Dream Team remedies that - my fingers are firmly crossed!

The locked room mystery tease has me intrigued. The dream crabs still have some mileage in them. Their previous Big Finish outings were both really good, so it'll be interesting to hear what nightmares are in store for Tegan and Adric. The Doctor and Nyssa should be more level headed but both are vulnerable their past trauma.

To be honest, I could see a situation where the Dream Crabs are unable to get inside Tegan’s head because the Mara is already in there and won’t let them in! Doubt that will happen in this story though.

HHMM. Is there anything to be read regarding the (oddly?) specific capital letters? Or just a case of "fat fingers on the keyboard"

Regards mark687 My instant thought was "Benny", if you read the "BE" and "NN" in order. Then I looked on Twitter and the reminder for Sontarans vs Rutans 3 has a capital "Y"! So... I'm guessing we've got some Benny news coming our way

I was hoping for an announcement of Blood Harvest to compliment Goth Opera but any new Benny is always welcome!
Loved the Dream Team trailer btw. Still can't wait for this.

Absolutely loved The Merfolk Murders. A cracking mystery that kept me hooked throughout its various twists and turns. Sometimes we get brilliant plots like this, which are let down in the production side of things, which sometimes struggle to convey flashbacks or passings of time; fortunately Merfolk doesn't suffer from any of that. Davison's in his element in the final part, bringing the evidence out and revealing the suspect and associated evidence. Waterhouse gets some of his best material as Adric too and there's lovely character work for the guest cast throughout.
As an aside, I would definitely be up for a set with Four & Sarah and their alter egos!
Seemed to be a slight error with the closing theme in Part Two using the Sixth Doctor variant instead.

While some other Doctors drift across the universe with a balance of new companions (not always worthy of them) and old, bombarded with a plethora of returning friends and enemies, the Fifth simply breezes by with his cavalcade of faithfuls, only occasionally facing returning foes. The Dream Crabs are the revisited villains in this set, but they’re relegated to this set’s 2-parter. The mighty Tim Foley pens The Merfolk Murders, set in 1940s Scotland: a very easy-to-picture, atmospheric location.
The extras are interesting. Peter Davison says how the ‘interesting’ script reminds him of television’s Black Orchid, which he is known for not liking at all mainly because it has no sci-fi trappings. Whilst I’m glad we didn’t get a Dalek or a Cyberman revealed as the killer this time round (!), I think the story could have done with an extra ‘something’ – possibly some supernatural influence, or something more out of the ordinary than what we got; but if I’m honest, I’m not hugely galvanised by this kind of talky drama, well-plotted and cleverly thought out as it undoubtedly is. We’re given scant time to get to know the characters before being asked to care about who’s been bumping off the others. This story, for all its many wonderful moments, terrifically played, isn’t immune from that pet issue, sadly, although I found Adric and Henry’s friendship interesting, inevitably unresolved.
There are some lovely moments of dialogue here – the Doctor reminiscing about his older selves, his various companions interacting with each other and others (Adric is still a bumptious difficult blighter, for which I applaud BF and Matthew Waterhouse, especially if he hasn’t eaten in the last hour!). Although this particular style of story isn’t my cup of tea, Tim Foley is an excellent writer, and makes this a good deal more interesting than a lot of whodunnits I’ve seen.
“Murder is mathematics.”

Bloody loved Dream Team too. Excellent use of the TARDIS team, all with their own imaginary trappings and plenty of humour laced throughout. Loved the pairing of Adric & Tegan but the real highlight was the portrayal of the Doctor. Erratic, almost helpless and a complete contrast to his assured nature in The Merfolk Murders; Davison sounded off his tits in places… in a good way!
Used well, the Kantrofarri are proving themselves to be one of Doctor Who’s best. Especially in an almost black comedy scenario.
Quite comfortably the best outing for Five since the move to box sets and one of the best overall releases since that move. And certainly one of the highlights of 2024 so far. More please!
