Annette Badland as the Toymaker is amazing casting. She’ll be excellent in the role.
I’m very much looking forward to this set.

Against my better nature, I read the comments on the Facebook announcement of this release, and some people are getting in a tremendous stew about how The Fourteenth Doctor said that he hasn't met The Toymaker since the original 1966 story.
John Dorney has replied that there are a few lines in this tale that explain that.
Edit: as noted in his Tweet posted by mark687 a couple of posts above, I've just noticed!

Annette Badland will be absolutely superb. Personally, I can only hope the Toymaker is written more in the vein of 'Solitaire' than 'The Giggle'.

I don't recall Fourteen explicitly saying that they hadn't met since The Celestial Toymaker, but the Toymaker saying that he fought the first Doctor, Fourteen and then the next Doctor (Fifteen) - so who's to say that the Toymaker is meeting the Doctor in the right order? (Admittedly, I could have missed Fourteen's line about not meeting him since the original story in which case someone can correct me...) Either way, BF has already contradicted that with The Nightmare Fair and Solitaire so I'm not sure why people are kicking up a fuss about it - especially since this was recorded before RTD even returned.

"One-all. I won the game many years ago, you've won today, which leaves us equal. And you know two players are bound by one inviolable rule."
The Giggle is fairly concrete that it's meant to be the Doctor's first encounter with him since The Celestial Toymaker.

I think the Toymaker turning the Doctor’s past into a jigsaw puzzle could extend to cover stuff like that too.

The Giggle is fairly concrete that it's meant to be the Doctor's first encounter with him since The Celestial Toymaker. Or at least from The Toymaker's perspective. I suspect this may be later on in The Toymaker's "life".

I guess Daleks will turn up in a 9th Doctor adventure soon. Although this was recorded on 9 April, 13 September and 28 October 2019, 1 and 3 June 2020.

It’s not BF “not caring” - all their Toymaker audios were either released or recorded before the 60th was even written. Can’t blame them for not having a crystal ball.

That is why I mentioned when this was recorded. However do we know when the 60th was written? & BF do have to run things past BBC.

The Giggle is fairly concrete that it's meant to be the Doctor's first encounter with him since The Celestial Toymaker. Could it be argued that it’s referring to them playing the games rather than actual encounters? I don’t recall much of The Nightmare Fair but Solitaire was Charley playing against the Toymaker so doesn’t count as a game between the Doctor and the Toymaker.

I believe RTD mentioned it to David and Catherine after the The Runaway Bride watchalong which was December 2020, so the earliest the 60th could have been written was 2021.

The Giggle is fairly concrete that it's meant to be the Doctor's first encounter with him since The Celestial Toymaker. I rather read that as the last time the Doctor PLAYED against the Toymaker was the 66 story. maybe someone else is playing and the Doctor is set dressing/whatever for the game? After all, the Toymaker wouldn’t say they were playing against Mel or Steven would they?

We all know the 4DAs (as we get them) are running 4/5 years behind their recording times, so it's not a surprise when things like this happen.
And with this villain, it doesn't have to make sense in any case, they aren't bound by the rules of our universe. The Toymaker is meeting the Doctor from Time to Time and playing all the right games, but not necessarily in the right order...
(Getting some fun announcements at the moment aren't we? While you're at it BF, how about my suggestion of 'The War Iris'? )
