I've been hoping that BF eventually get a prose license and release some War Doctor short stories or novels...yes I know they've already lost the license to prose Who years ago, and yes novels are much more time consuming to write but in many ways prose would get across the timey wimey horrors of the war easier than narrated audiobooks would, and I'm not really comfortable with 'recasting' Hurt's role (even simply as an audiobook reader) at the stage.
Maybe they could do a chronicles style boxset with various characters at different points in the war relating their encounters with the War Doctor, the character would be very much present but 'off screen' and it would avoid a recast.

I'm not quite sure what to make of the announcement. I'm looking forward to the first set, and have been since the initial announcement, I've enjoyed The Rulers of the Universe and The Sontaran Ordeal. I can't wait for the two upcoming Short Trips and the Vashta Nerada story. The trouble is that's 9 Time War penned stories for the Eighth Doctor already, without the announcement of a further 12. Sir John Hurt - THE War Doctor - only managed to get 12 stories recorded. I understand the reasons behind that, it just seems off to me that Paul McGann will have a total of at least 21 Time War stories come 2020. Surely some of them will just be War Doctor scripts that were sadly not recorded? Agreed, as much as McGann is my favourite Doctor and I'm keen to hear his adventures in the time war...I'm really uneasy about the idea of him eclipsing the War Doctor in time war stories, 8 was killed at a relatively early stage of the conflict and I wouldn't want BF to use up all their time war ideas with him if/when they later decide to/figure out a way to make War Doctor stories without Hurt. It would only reinforce the arguments over the War Doctor and eclipse Hurt's small collection of official Who stories (which is why I'm completely opposed to recasting the War Doctor, the recast actor would have more stories than Hurt did).

Whilst I'm not hugely turned on by returning too often to the Time War (which I always felt was better spoken of in hushed tones rather than laid bare and analysed), I'm sure there will be interesting stories to be told within that framework - otherwise, it'll just be 'Daleks/Time Lords/crash-bang-wallop'. With that in mind, with John Hurt sadly gone from us and Christopher Eccleston unavailable, then McGann's the man to go with. I don't have a problem with him having more stories told amidst the Time War than The War Doctor. It's unavoidable really, unless Big Finish chose not to return to war at all. As long as they're enjoyable, then all's good.

It's a shame the BBC have dialed back on the Doctor Who tie in books, Tennant had what 30-40? Capaldi's had 9 novels and a short story anthology, I;m not sure how popular the novels are but resurrecting the past Doctors range would be a great way to explore era the Tv series or BF can't touch any more due to deceased actors or written out companions.

Have to admit that I was largely disappointed with the Hurt/War Doctor box sets. After Only the Monstrous -- which I thought had a good grasp of War's personality and a strong character-driven story -- the writers didn't know what to do with him and often stuck Hurt in bog standard plots and scripts riddled with holes and cliched dialogue (Vol. 3 is the worst in that regard). Whereas Eight's Time War stories have been great so far (I loved The Diary of River Song and The Sontaran Ordeal), and the writers seem to have a better understanding of Eight's character and his place in the war.

I disagree completely. I haven't heard Casualties of War yet as my parents are getting me it for Christmas but the first three volumes are fantastic. They are exactly what I want from Time War audios, and John Hurt is just as excellent as I expected. In comparison I found The Sontaran Ordeal with 8 a disappointment. One of Paul McGann's weaker performances and a very mediocre story.

Most of his lines are merely functional -- go there, do this, push that button. I found it really boring after awhile. At least McGann's Doctor is given some interesting moral dilemmas.

It may be worth noting that when McGann signed up for BF there had already been lots of novels, comics and short stories with his Doctor (and some of the BF writers had already written for the 8th Doctor in other mediums) he was already very developed, the war Doctor had roughly 40 minutes of screentime, a sole novel and maybe one or two comic and short story appearances...he was more of a blank slate in some ways but also appeared on TV at the very end of his life, fully formed. BF had to work backwards and establish/develop the character at an earlier stage in his life, but they weren't allowed to do anything that dramatic or dark by the BBC and only had the 12 episodes to do so, i.m.o the War Doctor series was a solid character study and a good mix of high concept sci fi, action epic and small scale character study...yes I'd have liked the stories and Doctor to be darker and more experimental but I did very much enjoy the run we had.

I can't possibly disagree more. The third volume is weaker than the first two, but it still feels extremely unique to me from other Doctor Who stories. I certainly didb't think John Hurt was wasted when I listened to them.

But The Engines of War was the first audio depiction of the War Doctor. And that had Nick Briggs narrating and playing the various parts including the War Doctor. Big Finish doing the War Doctor Chronicles would simply be a continuation of the audio adventures for that Doctor with someone who has already given voice to the War Doctor. I was surprised and very pleased that we got full cast audios with Sir John Hurt, but it would be sad if we never had any more War Doctor stories on audio. However with the Eighth Doctor having four boxsets set in the Time War over the next three years I don't see the need for the War Doctors return to audio until those are finished.
