Downloaded and ready to listen to (after Dorian). I know I'm being Pedantic and it's only a small thing, but I really wish BF would standardise on titles . Take the screenshot from the website: Is it Carnacki the Ghost-Finder, or Carnacki The Ghost Finder? It's playing havoc with my album naming lol Cheers Tony EDIT: Yes I know, I have far too much time on my hands today

Lovely collection of stories that I can't wait to dive into, but - and I genuinely hate to moan - is it really necessary to have Nick Briggs announcing every story over the music? It's nice to buy the occasional release without him on it.

Or is Briggs appearing on every release as the "announcer" only bother us because we're this obsessive...

I wish I could answer those questions, but it annoyed me a little if I'm honest. Perhaps he'll be announcing everything from now on, just in case we inadvertantly play the wrong release.

I have to confess, I wish if they'd do announcer, at least tell us the cast members as well. (Do they for this release?)

My collected Hodgson book of the stories goes with "Carnacki" large on top, then "The Ghost-Finder" underneath.

I'm really enjoying these stories. I read them not too long ago and the performance makes you feel like you're in the room as one of Carnacki's guests. The music and additional sounds are very much in the background. There is just enough to support the mood without taking you out of the story.

I grabbed the free download and just couldn't get into it. I'll have to give it another listen, but at this point I don't see myself buying the full set. Once I'm over this mild head cold I'll re-listen - the headache I've had for the past week probably isn't helping with my concentration.

I am really enjoying these also, and I hope it paves the way for Big Finish to pursue further horror readings. I like the subtle musical enhancements. It takes me back to the days when Barnaby Edward's exemplary 'Textbook Stuff' was in operation. I'm not going to roll out my eternal wish for BF to tackle readings of HP Lovecraft in a similarly enhanced fashion ... or am I?
Dan Starkey is excellent. By their nature, the prose must be difficult to read 'naturally', but Starkey does sterling work. These are made to be listened to again and again, and I'll certainly be doing that when I have the chance.

Finally finished these today. I thought they were a lot of fun. My favorites were probably the one about the galloping horse and the last one with the dagger.
I like that you never know if there is going to be a supernatural or rational explanation. That was probably the biggest surprise for me because I feel usually these type of stories go in one direction or the other. I feel as a supernatural investigator that is what makes Carnacki different from his peers.
And I highly enjoyed Dan Starkey's reading. He wasn't just great at Carnacki but also all the other voices. Loved the music for this too.
The only thing Dodgson seemed kind of superfluous. Well he's no Watson that's for sure.

Thought the Carnacki free story was enjoyable enough, so will definitely pick the full release up when funds permit.

I loved these. Even listened to a few twice.
I'm such a lonely person.

The Good: Firstly, Dan Starkey. He was just excellent in this. He endowed every word with meaning and interest, even the outdated ones. The stories were extremely visual and full of interesting ideas.
The bad: I could not get through a single story without zoning out. Even with the above pluses I just couldn't stay interested for an entire story. After trying to get through the horse one, I decided to give up and try the last 2 another time. Maybe I'll be more receptive. I really did want to like these.

Well, I for one, liked these quite a bit. I went into them knowing nothing about Carnacki. I didn't even know when it was set - after a bit, I surmised it must be some time between 1900 and the first World War though. They might have been a little dry at times, but for me to listen to on my commute they were fine. I don't regret the purchase. Oh, I guess I still have one left to listen to, I hit a wrong button and deleted episode 2 on my MP3 player before I listened to it.
I assume this will be "it" for this series, as in, no plans to write brand new stories using the character?

There are three other William Hope Hodgson Carnacki stories (all published posthumously).
Another possibility would be to do a reading or adaptation of the Telos novella 'Foreign Devils', which feature Carnacki meeting the Doctor, Jamie and Zoe. If done as a reading, it could be shared between Dan Starkey and Frazer Hines.
I haven't read it, but Carnacki turns up in 'The Breath of God', a Sherlock Holmes novel by Guy Adams (who wrote a Torchwood episode) pubished in 2011.
That's all without new stories being created...
