edit: By the way Robert, every time you say "six", I think it's "sex". Just sayin'. whaaa-chicka-whaaa-whaa.... I did once explain to an actor on stage that Big Finish made Doctor Who CD stories, and they replied confusedly "there are seedy Doctor Who stories?'

another edit: Aaron mentions that he wrote the character of Eve as a saucy sexpot and very flirty with Tom Lacey, yet that characterization was vetoed. I wonder why, as that is exactly how Eve comes across on the original series. Isn't that how she come across in Beyond the Grave anyway? Presumably it was just a question of emphasis so the sexpot levels were consistent across the two plays.

All the artefacts have gone off to the CHS for the next podcast(s). So here's another musical trailer - the other Artmagic single Forever in Negative - showing interviewee Sean McGhee at work, singing his tweedy little socks off.

Part one of my interview about the music of Dark Shadows is up now at www.collinsporthistoricalsociety.com/2016/03/podcast-music-of-night-part-one.html"Big Finish Productions co-producer and director David Darlington is also responsible for the sound design and incidental scores on the Dark Shadows audios. In 2013 he brought producer/singer/songwriter Sean McGhee on board to write character themes and songs for use in the audios. The three of us recently got together to discuss the music of DARK SHADOWS In this prelude to the main movement, Sean tells me of his career as 'musician-at-large' — touring with Alison Moyet, working with Alanis Morissette, and fronting his own band Artmagic with Suede guitarist/songwriter Richard Oakes. Davy and Sean also fill me on their friendship, and how they put the world of music to rights on a regular basis. And I put a few dollars into the Blue Whale jukebox to play some songs from Sean's back catalog." We reach Collinsport in Part Two, online tomorrow. I'm really pleased with these two podcasts. I came up with the idea of getting Sean in for a chat and illustrating it with songs from his past. And then Joe Lidster and I both worked hard on popping in little musical treats throughout and making the most of the audio environment.

Can't wait to give them proper listens...which means when there are no distractions and before Julia's sedative kicks in.

In 2013 he brought producer/singer/songwriter Sean McGhee on board to write character themes and songs for use in the audios. The three of us recently got together to discuss the music of DARK SHADOWS. In this second act, Davy tells me how Sean came to be involved in the DARK SHADOWS world and how the two of them worked together, and Sean explains the process in writing fictional songs. Davy also talks of his approach to writing his own DARK SHADOWS music and when to use Robert Cobert's cues. They each choose their favorite incidental musicians and scores. And they fill me in on how they worked together on singer Andrew Montgomery's solo album, songs from which appear on the Blue Whale jukebox. The music from "The Phantom Bride", "Beneath the Veil," "The Enemy Within," "The Lucifer Gambit," "The Flip Side" and "Beyond the Grave" is available free on Soundcloud soundcloud.com/darkshadowsbfp/dark-shadows-the-music"

Hello! I've been lurking for a while, but finally created an account on here. I fully enjoyed this podcast, it was fascinating to learn things I didn't know about. I wanted to say how for a while in the beginning, I was mildly interested in Dark Shadows via the Big Finish audios. But when I heard the Blue Whale Jukebox music cue in "Echoes of Insanity" I had to write Stuart Manning and ask about what the song was, who wrote it, etc! I think it was the moment my interest in Dark Shadows moved from "mild" to "very strong indeed". Just loving that song was the germ of what would eventually become "The Flip Side". It wasn't long after that I started watching the show, and just absorbing everything I could from the beginning. Robert Cobert's music is amazing and what David and Sean have done is fantastic as well!

Loved both podcasts! It's so nice to hear directly from David and Sean all about the process for both incidental music and full-fledged songs! Still feel that "The Better Side" is a musical masterpiece for its period sound, the lyrics which reflect the story, and the fact that It was all Sean! Amazing. "The Flip Side" will always be at the top of my all time favorites. Cody's story naturally, and Christopher and Nancy's performances make it thus--but Sean's music is such a big part of that as well.
I really agreed with David and Sean about how soundtrack music should be subtle and evocative without overpowering the story. To illustrate that point, I think it was Sean who mentioned John Williams as a perfect counter-point and he is. While there's no question that he's a brilliant composer, sometimes (often) his symphonic, huge, grand scores can take you out of the moment, so that you're focusing more on the music. And really, you don't want to do that unless your subject is Star Wars VIII or some other epic that can support an entire orchestral composition.
Really good!! Thanks Robert!

Yay, I got to listen to something and it was about time I got to some of the podcasts so I heard parts 1 and 2 of the Music of the Night interview. Just fantastic, everybody. I really enjoyed getting to hear Davy's sentiments about the music in Dark Shadows and am also pleased with myself that they sounded rather like I had inferred from hearing the music.
Also very glad to hear about some of the opportunities that Sean who is so very deserving has gotten. I suspect they are both far too humble as there's a part where they're talking about how the music is put together and they about try to make it sound like neither one of them can even play an instrument - the beautiful and brilliant music from both of them featured in the podcasts certainly says otherwise.
Thanks very much, Davy, Sean and bobod!

I loved the recent podcasts. The music has been great in the audios, but I did notice that things really started working out during the 1973 "small" cast audio dramas. Plus when I was listening to Tainted Love this week. There was an effective mix of music from Robert Cobert and newer music, which effectively balanced emotions of looking to the past and looking ahead. I can't to hear the next music and podcast.

Do you know if we can download the Soundcloud file with the music? I tried looking for a download option--I would like to add it to my iTunes. I bought the CDs for the Music Volumes 1 and 2, and this is effectively Volume 3. Great music from Sean McGhee and David Darlington. And it would be nice to have the song from Deliver Us From Evil (with vocals) and The Better Side (from The Flip Side) (also with vocals). At least The Better Side has a track at the end of The Flip Side CD.
Where is the song that Alfie sings in the car when he's rocking out with the radio and Emma tells him to stop because it's terrible? I was hoping to get that song too.

As you say, you can get The Better Side at the end of the Flip Side for your listening pleasure.
Waiting For Me - from Deliver Us from Evil - is available to buy at ruledbydreams.com. Other tracks from the album can be heard on the Blue Whale jukebox and on the radio throughout Bloodlust so you may find you recognise more of it. As Sean said in the podcast, if you liked Andrew's stuff please find it at the website for the album rather than anywhere else. Andrew's work, like the Dark Shadows audios, depend on sales to support there being more in the future.
At the start of Beneath the Veil? - that's by James Unsworth. I think it had popped up somewhere before and then seemed apposite for this scene.

Harry was listening to it in Bloodlust while sorting his photos, just before Jacky and Cody hit his window with pebbles to go out walking the streets at night.

I think some Andrew Montgomery was on the Cunningham car radio, so it makes sense a teenage boy would want to listen to something different from (or 'different than' for the Americans) his parents.

Yeah and then later he's listening to it in his room at the Collinsport Inn, when Jacky throws pebbles, not rocks, at his window. Always fun to have these little details that can take a few listens or a new perspective to notice.

Loved this one. The banter with KLS always seems so natural. And, in this case, besides being entertaining, it has an important awareness story as well. Lovely job, Robert. I'll get the audio of LDatS when it's released. I love that KLS is reading it herself!
