Love the Dorian music. It's a bit ahead, but t the end of season three you can hear the same theme but inverted . Ascending notes instead of descending. Cool never noticed that. I should put the score from the first 2 seasons on my phone. I have a few things like the music from the Heart that Lives Alone & the Lord of Misrule but I should add the rest.

The Twittering of Sparrows with the lovely Katy Manning for week 3. Will add my thoughts later will try not to write a book this time. I will probably not get to this one for a couple days. My mom has just gone into the hospital for observation and testing and I really want to enjoy The Twittering of Sparrows once I get all of that under control. I will definitely get to it though! I love my DG!

This is a great episode and shows a part of Dorian's past that we rarely get to see, his family. Katy Manning is terrific in this. The bickering of the two Greys is sibling rivalry for the ages. Dora knows her brother so well, even if they haven't seen each other for decades. To know that her brother was living forever looking young and beautiful while she grew old and withered was just not something she would let happen, is it? Now, I have to admit that being the good Jewish Mother that I am, I do know how to play Mah Jongg. It's a very thoughtful game, and I liked the way it was used as part of the Dragon myth in this. But to take it one step further and use the player as a prison for the monster is very cool.

"So we shared parents, Christmas holidays, governess, and lovers. Aren't we just the perfect siblings?"Great performance by Katy Manning so very different from her Jo or her Iris. The sibling rivalry between Dora & Dorian is a lot of fun but they really do care about each other. However I think it may be something deeper than just the fact that they are siblings. The last ties to an existence before they delved into the supernatural and made a decision that would change their lives forever. What I love about their relationship is I think both the animosity and love is both real here. It's the complexity of the relationship that makes it interesting to me. And the tragedy is Dorian loses the last trace of who he was before & he has to delve the killing blow. We never get to find out what Dora is going to ask Dorian because he kills her before she can ask. Now Mahjong I am sorry to say I know absolutely nothing about it so that's a layer of the story I don't completely understand. It did make me interesting to find out more about the game though. I also learned about the mystery of the MV Joyita thanks to this story. Though I have to say what intrigued me most during this relisten is all those stories we have not heard. Dorian mentions that he made the following trips. I am sure there are some wonderful adventures that could be told from these. It also makes me want to do a comprehensive time line of his long life to see where it all fits in (and to see where there are gaps) Thomas Raffles route to SingaporeWills and Burke route to AustraliaFrancisco Trip down the AmazonIrvine and Mallory

Interesting note!(I think) Mahjong in Chinese means "Game of Sparrows" When the Mahjong tiles are thrown down on the table, they make a clattering sound. The Chinese call this "The twittering of Sparrows"

I agree...a comprehensive timeline is long overdue! I have wanted to do one since my Dark Shadows one has been so well-received. I'm sure one of us will get to one eventually! I loved Katy in this! I have to agree with you about Mahjong--I know next to nothing about it...and I was a bit confused about the "dragons" here, and the monster/Dora, and how it all relates, so if someone would care to explain that to me! Of course, as usual, Alex is so great. And it's fun to see him showing all the different sides to Dorian. I think I'll have another re-listen and maybe more will become clear.

I haven't, so was wondering if there might be a sort-of timeline there already?

Sounds good! Have you checked the Dorian wiki? I haven't, so was wondering if there might be a sort-of timeline there already? In the Wikia they list the dates each story takes place but it's not comprehensive in it doesn't list dates of things Dorian mentions he did in the stories. It's more a time line of Confessions than a time line of Dorians' life which I am interested in.

Oh, I know what you mean now. I had just begun one before reading your post, starting with the three we have already listened to, but it's much more like what you described in the Wiki. Here it is...maybe it's a starting point into which you could add the events that Dorian describes?
The Confessions of Dorian Gray Audio Chronology
1900 - Paris - Dorian visits his old friend and biographer Oscar Wilde on his deathbed at the Hotel d’Alsace
1940 - London - Dorian’s past catches us with him as German bombs begin to fall
1956 - Singapore - Dorian is reunited with his sister Dora, now an old woman

I just re-listened to The Twittering of Sparrows and it made a lot more sense to me this time. Dorian and Dora are fascinating siblings, and it really is evident that they care deeply for each other, despite what they may say or how they act when reunited. The description of the "dragons" is very Lovecraftian....behemoths from the depths of the sea...love that!!!

We learn very little about most of what Dorian faces, maintaining the mystery and hold over us. The killer Babylonian wallpaper in This World Our Hell, the Lost in The Houses in Between and now the creatures perceived as Dragons who were contained through games of Mahjong, the writers are more keen on showing the effect rather than the cause. It's a good policy, the terror a threat poses can easily be lessened or undone by explaining it (like the Eminence in the Dark Eyes box sets).

I did manage to listen to The Twittering of Sparrows but life overtook me before I could post anything. As it is, you have already said everything I could say about it but I really enjoyed the exchanges between Dorian and Dora - the rivalry that almost borders on hate, but also a deep love that connects them - just like proper siblings. Katy Manning is fab in this. Will attempt to get back on track this week with The Heart That Lives Alone Cheers Tony
