Last few days I've heard The Home Guard, Nightmare Country, and Warzone. Really impressed with all three of them.

The Home Guard (EA). It's an alright story, which is a bit of a let down considering this is from Simon Guerrier. His stories for the First Doctor (both BF and novels) are among the best works written for any Doctor, so I tend to expect great things from him. This story isn't up to his usual standard, though it's still OK.

Torchwood - Ghost Mission.
In what is turning out to be a few days full of Big Finish listenings, I've at last got round to hearing this. It's not my favourite entry into the range, but it's one heck of a lot of fun. Tom Price steps effortlessly back into the shoes of Andy Davidson, and instantly has an engagingly sardonic relationship with Samuel Bartlett's Norton. It's taken me a long time to warm to Norton Folgate, but I'm sure there never was a time when I wouldn't have found lines like
{Spoiler} "Well, bend me over and pretend it's VE Day,"
outrageously funny. The interesting thing with Norton - and vital for the character - is that the overtly camp exterior is merely a front for something more complex. A very thickly sliced front though, I'll admit!
More lightly played than my favourite, more frightening episodes, this is nevertheless great fun and I'm sorry it has taken me so long to listen to it.
I also quite like Lisa Bowerman's listed character. 'Quite Anxious Shopper'. It's good to be specific!

Dust Breeding
AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA
While I wasn't surprised at the Master reveal due to the fact it's not 2001 anymore, I admit I was surprised that this iteration of the Crispy Master was post-Ainley. I had simply assumed all of Beevers' appearances would have been before Traken from his perspective and this was simply an out-of-order meeting. I don't know why they added that little flourish to it, but it's six of one, really. Overall, I think bringing in Geoffrey Beevers was one of the best decisions Big Finish could have made with regards to the Master with Ainley not being an option. Like Nick Courtney, he's got a voice that's real easy on the ears.
Also it's Bev again. Yay, I guess? Frankly I don't think she contributed much to the plot (Ace could have clued into the dust/Krill thing on her own) so I'm not sure why she's here. :/
I really liked the soundscape of Duchamp 331 with the blowing dust and continual maybe/maybe not Dalek scream. Really set the stage for what a miserable place it must be.
I didn't even recognize Caroline John as Frau Blucher Madame Salvadori. Fun character.
A lot of memorable moments, but I'm not so sure about the plot as a whole, it seems pretty run of the mill underneath it all. I guess I was hoping for something a little darker, richer, and more character focused. Enjoyable nonetheless, so it works out to being good, but not great.

Agreed Polly, it isn't the most radical plot or indeed the most thrilling ride, but it has grown on me after repeat listens and has joined that short list of Doctor Who's that I put on when I want something familiar.

Avengers The Lost Episodes Volume 1.
I've just noticed this first set is available for a tenner from Big Finish, bless 'em. Well worth it. It features Colin Baker as ‘Old Treadingie’, or Doctor Treading to me and you. Given the casting, I expected him to be more of a regular than he turned out to be, although it is fun spotting Colin playing other minor characters throughout. Sophie Aldred features in stories two and three, and Nick Briggs in story four. The inclusion of these latter two actors pays tribute to the original series – and its contemporaries – hiring British actors to play not entirely convincing foreigners.
Characters with names like ‘Pretty Boy’, casual references to cocaine, microfilms and the sound effects running underneath the ‘ad break’ music, giving away the idea that the image continues beneath the ‘end of part one’ caption also reminds me of the ‘feel’ of these bygone shows in a very pleasing way. The first two stories are a kind of two-parter, whilst, in a move unusual so early on in the series, the third, Square Root of Evil doesn’t feature much of Keel at all. Although I enjoyed it, it might be the weakest of the set. Finally, One for the Mortuary sees the partnership between Steed and Keel – which is the highlight of these stories – take more of a centre stage once again. Instantly important too, is Lucy Briggs Owen as the third Avenger, Carol.
This is an excellent series, and it always surprises me how much I love it, given that it doesn't feature much in the way of escapist sci-fi and/or horror. It does however, beautifully recreate a world full of dodgy cockney wideboys, small time villains, dastardly deeds and occasionally some surprisingly dark schemes. And that's just the first set! I look forward to re-listening to Box Set 2 next week. Beautiful times.

Need a time-out from Nekromanteia, where did that cat come from? Really not sure what was going on and cant really be arsed to rectify that. On to SJS and Test of Nerve. Erimem brought the cat with her when she boarded the TARDIS at the end of Eye of the Scorpion it was also prominanty featured in magazine freebie No Place Like Home

Finished the Early Adventures during my train journey back home. Liked the Home Guard, especially the first two episodes had some nice suspense to them. It is however a pretty standard Master story, which is entertaining but not particularly novel. The Daughter of the Gods has some amazing performances and the meeting of the Doctors is not played for laughs but adds some nice character development. The story itself... also nothing special. But this is definitely saved and elevated by the performances.

Nasty cold weather outside. Looking forward to a quiet and relaxing afternoon listening to both new Lost Stories. Earned that after the busy past days at the conference. But have to do my household chores first...

The reveal of the Master is probably what this one gets remembered for. In many ways I wasn't that disappointed that Ainley hadn't taken the role - I always thought that the scripts in the 1980s had him as a poor imitator of Delgado. Ainley is much better as Tremas. Beevers is excellent as the Master - really an unpleasant piece of work and much more menacing.

‘The Curator’s Egg’ Perhaps the closest thing Big Finish have done to a proper B Movie. A great deal of fun and ridiculously entertaining.

The Divergent Universe arc goes oddball, and what a breath of fresh air that is.
I do question the choice of having C’rizz under some form of mental influence in every single story since his introduction though. He’s still not made much of an impression due to that.

Lost Stories 2.6 Earth Aid
I enjoyed this one a lot, a spaceships story with an engaging plot (Trek reference, engage, gettit? ), sharp dialogue, strong characters and strong nods to 'Star Trek' - and Captain Ace! Great idea that and as an Osgood fan I really enjoyed hearing Ingrid Oliver as the no-nonsense Lt. Baraki, ready for action.
I wasn't expecting too much from this four-story series beyond the excellent 'Thin Ice' which was already a favourite - but I've enjoyed it very much. 'Animal' was the weak link imo and even that had its moments. The others have been fun listens with good plots and dialogue and plenty of action. Seven, Ace and Raine would be welcome back in my collection any time. Just watch out for the Metatraxi!

Lost Stories 2.2A Prison in Space
It may be non-PC to say so but I really enjoyed that! The script is a lot of fun, Frazer and Wendy are typically brilliant in all their characters and with their narrators' hats on (probably black, rubber hats for this one... ) and Susan Brown gives the wonderfully appalling Chairman Babs the 110% performance Madam Chairman would no doubt demand!
Simon Guerrier's adaptations always bring their eras alive for me; this could only have been a Second Doctor story imo and the visual 'Pat and Frazer' comedy moments were so well described I could almost see them in action. And Zoe showing off her 'Mind Robber' space karate (or whatever it's called) again, all good fun.
