The Veiled Leopard
A neat story that uses its gimmick to good effect and doesn’t outstay it’s welcome.

Here There Be Monsters
Rolling into Series 3 of the Companion Chronicles while neglecting everything else I started.
As much as I love the Season 1 TARDIS crew, Susan is hit and miss for me. She's not as useless as she's made out to be. I like her in concept because as his granddaughter, she has a unique relationship with the Doctor that no one else can. I feel this is something underserved by the TV series, and is ripe for Big Finish's trademark expansion. When her Gallifreyan origins and psychic spooky kid sides are the focus, that's great. When she's doing little else besides exclaiming "Grandfather!" not so much. And I have to confess, Carole Ann Ford has never been one of my favorite readers and that has not changed.
I like how dialogue heavy this story is, that's a great match for this unique format. Rostrum is cool, as are the tentacled, Lovecraftian things from the space beneath spaces. Navigation markers damaging space and letting horrors into our world is a great idea. And yet for whatever reason, I didn't find this particularly gripping, nor does it tell me all that much about Susan that I didn't know already.
This is one of those stories where you can just hear the black and white. Unfortunately, it's merely okay otherwise. I thought the ideas were more interesting than the execution.

'Have you seen this Henry? Look up there ^. It says we were in something called 'The Mahogany Murders'.' 'Does it indeed? I only signed us up for 'The Mahogany Murderers'. If I'd known they were going to make two turns from the same act, I'd have put in for a double fee...' (And yes it's brilliant, of course! ) *Checks cover art for the title* Ha ha ha! Whoops! What a massively mortifying mistake! A monumental misapprehension. Merely a miniscule misnomer, my dear sir, magnified mischievously by me.

A Bear Called Paddington (Michael Bond/Bernard Cribbins)
After listening to this it’s easy to see just why Paddington as a character has endured over the years. Delightfully innocent and also quintessentially British in its humour.
And dare I say it but I think Bernard Cribbins is one of those fortunate few who could be regarded as a perfect narrator/storyteller. I suspect that all that time spent on Jackanory allowed him to hone his craft to perfection.
Bonus points also must be given, given the fact that as it turns out that this was recorded not too far from my hometown. Naturally, the place this was recorded in is now a warehouse but such is the passing of time.

I'm on holiday in beautiful Northumberland (hurrah!) and I've decided to listen to a few of the more less fashionable audios over the next week.
First up, The Twilight Kingdom.

The Magician’s Oath (Scott Handcock)
A nice and strangely very mournful showcase for Captain Yates with some very neat set pieces that brought to mind certain episodes of the Avengers or the more obscure Ace of Wands. As for our villain, Diamond Jack made for a great whimsical yet extremely sinister antagonist and definitely one to be remembered.
Always thought Richard Franklin was one of the better narrators for the Companion Chronicles and it’s rather a shame that he’s been absent from Big Finish’s output as of late.
Which reminds me I really should give the Nest Cottage series a look sometime...

The Great Space Elevator
Victoria is not exactly high on my best companions list. And, with no disrespect intended, Deborah Watling's voice changed with age more than many of the other actors'. To the point where I had a hard time accepting her as teenage Victoria because she sounded rather more like an aged grandmother. Time comes for us all, it's not anyone's fault, but in this case the awkward truth is that it often broke my immersion in the story.
I must admit, a base under siege and a cascade of foam is pretty much bang-on for the Second Doctor. I quite liked the way he was written here, the narration evokes a sort of frumpy stage-magician persona, and that's perfect. Unfortunately, like the previous story, it's just not all that interesting, nor does it expand Victoria's character all that much.
The Second Doctor CCs thus far have been disappointing. I love that era of the show, and I know how good Troughton audios can be, but these early ones haven't been up to snuff and lag behind the other Doctors in the range.

The Twilight Kingdom - a mood of boredom hangs heavily over this one, which I did actually manage to finish this time. Shades of Apocalypse Now without much of the interest, 5 out of 10.

Oh, neat I'd never heard of that! This pre-dates Tom at Big Finish? Wonder why he'd do one and not the other. Hm!

Might start on the new Sixie set. Or Jago and Litefoot 6. Both looking very inviting.

Oh, neat I'd never heard of that! This pre-dates Tom at Big Finish? Wonder why he'd do one and not the other. Hm! You can buy the CD collection of 15 discs from amazon £25 in the UK at the moment, or get the lot digitally for one Audible Credit (about £7.99 here). That equates to what would have been about £150 as they were initillay released as individual tales. I bought the CD set when it came out and ripped them onto my hard drive. They are essentially what got Tom back into the role. A bit of a warm up as he found 'The Doctor' again, so there is a bit more of 'Tom Baker' in there. They are by Paul Magrs, and I think the Bafflegab 'Bakers End' is even further down the road of this kind of whimsical take. At that price I would suggest you make up your own mind though. You either get it or it is not quite the real deal. www.amazon.co.uk/Doctor-Who-Cottage-Chronicles-Originals/dp/178529122X/ref=sr_1_1?crid=LCVIW3G29MUV&dchild=1&keywords=nest+cottage+chronicles&qid=1597430356&sprefix=nest+cottage%2Caps%2C163&sr=8-1

I don't have an Audible account, so maybe when I have some time for them, I can make one and then snaffle them up with the free credit.
