MR Listen Thru
259 Blood on Santa's Claws & Other Stories-262 Subterfuge
(Nice seasonal anthology for 6th and solo 7th takes on the other Rouges resulting in 2 prequels [1 long awaited, 1 odd with a questionable inclusion] and a purposeful use of the celebrity historical figure)

Callan: File on a Deadly Deadshot
(The BF freebie DL.) That was very well done indeed, the most detailed, richest, period-authentic sound design since the Classic CM sets I think, really excellent and 'visual'.
And I liked the characters - one day I'll be adding these sets to my already overlong backlog! ('File on a Bulging Backlog' )

DW MR Listen Thur
263 Cry of the Vultras-268 The Flying Dutchman/Displaced
(6th, Flip and Connie return in a season that would be great TV solid recurring creatures, an outstanding pseudo History and interesting Celeb Historical Fig [oh right then... Am I wrong that I want to compare both versions and am I right in thinking this is the latest point in a story's production that BF have ever had to make changes?] Also solo 5th in investigative mode is surprisingly good and Sylvester continue to be back in the performance grove which he found again from Warlock's Cross on wards.)

It was my most looked-forward release, pity they cant do new stories as they would be even better.

It's mostly because my backlog currently includes ALL The Avengers Lost Episodes that I didn't add to my 'problems' with Callan... Must make a start on them soon. I know they'll be special, which is sort of why I've been saving them. Silly isn't it?

Gallifrey Time War 4.3 : Beyond
Excellent episode which really got the weirdness of pushing Time to the limits, in a way I expected the Time War sets to do all the time (whatever 'all the time' means in a Time War ) but they often don't. This story did and it's a great two-hander for Romana and Brax with occasional camoes and a monster which finally seemed quite scary!

4DAs 10.3 The Tribulations of Thaddeus Nook
That was fun and with a menacing villain, but still fun, and timey-wimey. And did I mention it was fun too? If Leela had stayed for S16, it might have been just like this. Excellent.

I've listened to Ever After Happy and The Grel Invasion of Earth from The Story So Far - Volume 1. The first story felt somewhat... inconsequential. There was no real reason for the time travel in the story beyond "You were lonely" (and the fact it was an anniversary story), and the subsequent chain of events didn't really feel like they were worth the premise. As for The Grel Invasion of Earth, I actually really loved the return of "Adventure is My Name". It surprisingly hit quite the nostalgia spot, despite it's tacky awfulness and cheesiness Bearing that in mind, it was the only thing I liked about this story at all. I've said on here before that I don't think rinsing and repeating dialogue from old stories is clever in any way unless it's serving some sort of narrative function, and not only was this pulling up old dialogue, but it was a complete re-tread of one of my absolute favourite stories. There wasn't a single significant difference of any worth in the way the stories played out (and there were FAR too many nods to completely insignificant moments from the original too!), and the whole thing just feels like the laziest Doctor Who related story I've ever seen/listened to/read. I also hadn't heard the Grel in anything for ages and had forgotten how ridiculous flipping annoying they are! Not only do they pad the run time by saying so many needless words, but their use as pure expositional devices for the majority of the story was so transparent it was painful. Not quite as painful as the repurposed dialogue between Benny and Jason at the end of the story though... I was physically cringing listening to that bit. I'm hoping the other stories from The Story So Far sets are an improvement, but lately I've found myself struggling to enjoy most of what I've been hearing, so I'm not holding my breath. Maybe after 6+ years of almost daily listening I'm starting to suffer a bit of burnout? I listened to The Lovecraft Invasion a couple of days ago though and actually really enjoyed it (bar a couple too many mentions of Lovecraft's racism in the first two episodes - the right balance was struck for the second half of the story). It could just be I've come across a(n admittedly huge) crop of stories that aren't really my thing over the last couple of months though. And there are so many upcoming releases in the next few months that I'm super keen to hear, so maybe things are about to turn around I don't know. Time will tell, I guess...

The more we hear, the higher the bar is bound to be set I guess? Sometimes I like to try a complete change of genre for a while, just to shake things up a bit. Or a run of stories which sort of play on the same field, but under different rules. For example, around Christmas I enjoyed a run of M.R.James (as is a tradition for me) before delving into my very last "new" Jago & Litefoot, and then early this year (feeling a bit sad I'd completed my favourite range) I went off into the backlog of Baker Street with Holmes and Watson for a run of their early BF stories.
After all this Victoriana, I came back feeling just right for some 'Doctor Who', in time to tackle the multiple Masters and the end of Charley's arc in the MR.
Hope you find some listening gems in the months ahead.

The Last Vampire (Willis Hall)
Read by Geoffrey Matthews. Matthews makes for a wonderful reader and the writing is superb and very funny in places. It’s the sort of story I would have adored as a child and the best thing is I believe it’s the beginning of a series so I’m definitely going to be on the lookout for other instalments.

I have to admit February was a bad big finish month for me. From The Twilight Kingdom to all 6 warner unbound stories, most of which didn’t do a lot for me like last time, to some early adventures which were just okay.
So far march has been a much better affair. Animal Instinct and The Lifeboat and the Deathboat were really great stories from the dors5, definetly the best set i have listened to from that range with the first and last stories also being great. Rare for a boxset, esp a four disc one to not have a weak link.
I also started the reaping which is amazing so far, if it sticks the landing itll be an all time great, i do live both the sixth doctor and peri though. (Sox is really great in this too, if you feel that the Big Finish Sixth doctor is a bit to mellow, this has been a great for the season 22 Sixie if not the most accurate depiction of him so far it really does feel like a lost story or something. Excited for part two.
