Now that Nekromanteia is only .99p/.99c on download with the current BF offer, there's no reason for people not to join in the 'Erimem listen through' and give this story a go ... and hear what all the fuss is about!

To be fair though, the 5th Doctor did have his moments where he's just sort of standing there defying someone.....by just sort of standing there and saying "that's bad. Stop doing that." In fact, I remember a rather funny line from one of the BF releases where he says "Y... yes. I defy you. I stand here, and I defy you" and, basically, circumstance ends up providing the solution or escape; he had nothing. I can't place the line. Ohh, it rings a bell, but... Yeah, I can't place it either. Yeah, I think it's probably one of the Fifth Doctor's most enduring traits outside of being the determinator. He's a defiant idealist, probably the most idealistic of all the Doctors (possibly beaten by Eight). He's got this inherent moral "goodness" that blinds him to more dubious means of gaining the advantage, mainly I think because they just don't occur to him. Resurrection of the Daleks is a bit of a watershed moment in that regard. I don't think he's a coward as Davros claims, but his assessment that the Doctor "denies what is real" when he refutes war as a universal truth really seems to get to him. I think he worries sometimes that his idealism gets in the way of saving lives. That maybe he trusts too easily. But then, if The Caves of Androzani is anything to go by, that idealism is probably his most endearing trait as well. In Enlightenment, he doesn't badger or try to convince Turlough of his way. He simply lets him make the choice, confident in the capacity for good in others and that's ultimately how you make more of it. Kindness begetting kindness and so forth. Maybe he takes that risk because of its potential rewards and if he does get a spear through the chest, well, it's more energy devoted towards him rather than the people he's trying to protect. He puts himself first -- straight into the line of fire -- hoping that reason will win out against brute violence. I would not want to play him in Poker.

It's still not as bad as Minuet in Hell. And its better than The Dark Husband. Rather telling The Oncoming Storm podcast avoided that one in favor of Forty Five

It's still not as bad as Minuet in Hell. I beg to differ on that one. Not because Minuet is any sort of underrated classic, but I at least find that one so bad it's hilarious (John Doe was taken so they use Zebidiah Doe?! America has added a 51st state and called it Malebolgia?! Did a junior high student write this mess?!). Definitely one of the worst, but so wrong-headed in how it goes it has a sort of ironic entertainment value. Even its attempts to be 'edgy' seem too childish and naive to be truly offensive. Nekromanteia, on the other hand, is a hateful and nasty piece of work with a rather crude sense of misogyny running throughout it. Listening to it a second time I found that even things I thought were slight saving graces did nothing to ease my pure cringing feeling listening to this ugly mess. From unnecessarily horrific violence to sexual assault to a suicidal cat and a decapitated Doctor, everything that occurs in this story just made me angrier to consider someone thought it would be a good idea. I think the only thing I'd be willing to forgive is the horrible screechy voices of the witches; and that's only because I know there are more annoying characters out there (particularly one individual in a later Erimem story, but I'll save that comment for later). Even the cover is an eyesore to look at, appearing as if the artist behind it just gave up and ran a couple pictures through random photoshop filters. This is a story that truly lives down to its reputation no matter how one looks at it. ...and yet somehow I still find it one step up on Exile. I was willing to give Nekromanteia a second chance; I honestly couldn't imagine doing the same to that disaster. I guess everyone has their own lowest point...

So while we disagree on just how bad these two are, I see we agree on Exile.

An overall unengaging story made worse by the utterly unnecessary treatment of Erimem. Her rape comes out of nowhere, has almost no impact on her characterisation for the rest of the story (one scene of her being shell-shocked and then they move on and never mention it again) and adds nothing to the story.

If you listened to the story, Erimem wasn't actually raped though. Punched and kicked and "a lot worse" had Harlon not been fought off, yes, but it's quite clear she wasn't raped. It was a brutal attack, but I can't understand why people still say Erimem was raped.

It's implied that she was molested and assaulted which in my opinion was quite disgusting and un-necessary in a Doctor Who story.

Just averaging the scores, nekromanteia is sitting at a lofty 40/100.
About what I expected.

Nothing can actually be generalized as good or bad It's a matter of individual taste - never know, I may also like it. I try not to go in with opinions

I have to listen to this one now.. been hearing so much about how amazing it is I actually liked it. But I also liked The Dark Husband, so what do I know? I liked TBTTF too. It's a fantasy pastiche of all the 'Journey to the Lost Land at the Top of the Centre of the World that Time Forgot' movies that were staples of 70s holiday TV viewing, invariably with an expedition of Victorian/Edwardian types and what would now be called steampunk technology, meeting some semi-deranged local dictator and a load of big beasties, usually prehistoric ones. And with effects and stop-motion model work that were very good for their time. Heard in that light, and with the willingness to send-up those movies and Doctor Who tropes and A Certain Character, it's a lot of nonsensical fun and I really don't know why it gets the bad reviews. But then, I postively loved 'Robot of Sherwood' and that regularly gets panned by fans. More sense of humour and less desire to fit everything into strict canon goes a long way to enjoying the wilder fringes of the Doctor's life!
