Took a few months off for various reasons....fatigue with the show, busy with life, busy with other shows, but I've been back at it for a couple weeks.
I'm a little ways into the Laura Collins/Phoenix storyline now and really feeling re-energized. A day or two ago I watched the one where Roger tosses the painting into the fire and there's an unearthly/ghostly scream. Chilling!

I recently started a rewatch. I'm in early days and I love this era of the show. The black and white era is magical to me. Even before Barnabas shows up, it's something I get completely engrossed in. It's the era of Burke Devlin stirring the pot, dusting off every closeted skeleton, and Mitch Ryan is Shatnerian in his ability to lock in on another actor and effortlessly raise the dramatic tension of a scene with a slight change in his tone of voice or a loaded glance. Characters like Elizabeth, Roger, and Vicki get their best storylines in this era and the ominous mood of the setting bleeds into every scene. I love the slow build up to the supernatural elements - a creepy legend here, a glimpsed apparition there - the ghosts of Collinwood seem to haunt every scene just out of view. Even though the defining elements of what made Dark Shadows what it is aren't present, the show still seems remarkably self-assured and confident.

Agreed! I was hooked from the word go.
Or rather, I was hooked from the words "Yes, I'm here. What do you want me to do?" lol

What a great post, thank you!! Absolutely! Also, just seeing the characters actually out of doors before the budget confined them to studio sets is absolutely magical in itself, and so is just being able to watch the show slowly undergoing the most amazing transformation. With Tony & Cassandra 3 almost upon us, I have to say that I am in total awe that something I grew up with is still in this world like that. Big Finish and Dark Shadows producers and cast, I cannot ever thank all of you enough.

Really haven't been in the mood much to watch TV and hard to watch while doing other things, but I picked a Dark Shadows DVD at random and watched about eight episodes of things heating up with Count Petofi. So there you have it, I like the 1897 arc so much I could pick it out (and did) with my eyes closed. :-)
What an amazing cast over the course of just a couple of hours. Sadly I think this must have been the part where Frid was filming the Dark Shadows movie, didn't catch a glimpse of my hero.

Well that didn't last long... It occurred to me to keep watching and see if Barney showed up (translate: this show is habit-forming, lol). I always find it amazing that just when I really start wondering "Where's so-and-so" on Dark Shadows, there they seem to be. Kudos to Dr. Ian Reed. He may be one of the least remembered Doctors on the show, but it's awesome the way he takes charge of the situation.

Heh. I've paused out again as well. Not from lack of interest, I've just been busy watching and reading other things, to say nothing of work and Xmas prep.

Just reached the point in my rewatch where the Old House appears for the first time, and we get the first proper appearance of Josette's ghost. I love that Dark Shadows took its time with the backstory and build up to this. A lot of shows would have rushed into that first appearance of the ghost to try to squeeze out all the juice from it as quickly as possible, but with Dark Shadows we get such a nice introduction to it as part of the setting right from the start, but we aren't sure what to make of all the tales of widows and ghosts in white dresses. It's creepy to hear David talk about the ghosts he talks to, but we don't know if David is making it up, being such a prolific liar, or if it's real. When the ghost finally does appear, it's shocking to see that the ghost stories that have been lingering in the background of the narrative are true, and the implications of the reveal change how we view the narrative and characters.

I gave up around episode 1020ish, but due to a friend sending me the Lara Parker books and just feeling like it's time to get back into it, I've restarted the series. At episode 10 and enjoying the slow pace of these early episodes, though there is definitely a feeling of not knowing what the first big story arc would be beyond introducing characters. Like the mystery of is Burke coming back for revenge isn't actually much of a mystery, so it's just the search for Victoria's past which is keeping me going.

I too am restarting! Debating on picking it back up in the 600s, or starting from the beginning again.
IIRC I was finding the whole Adam & Eve storyline a slog.

The Leviathan storyline is a bigger slog for me. I'm just passed the halfway mark in that, and least Barnabas is likeable again.

I'm now at episode 35 aka the end of the Roger has a car accident story and the transition to the first real long running story. The biggest pros that I've been loving this time around is David as a character and the relationship he has with Burke. I also really like the little hints that Roger may not know if David even is his son (which I don't think we ever get an answer to). I genuinely think he is and if not Roger eventually comes to love him as a son so that's a plus. The biggest con here isn't the slow pace, but just the fact that episodes 31-35 really feel like a bunch of filler with the only real development being Carolyn basically breaking up with Joe.

I've made it to episode 100 in the rewatch meaning I'm 23 episodes from the beginning of the first real supernatural story arc. Yeah the standard soap opera is fun and all, but Dark Shadows isn't really Dark Shadows without the spooks.

I've made it to episode 165 so right in the middle of the Phoenix storyline. Honestly I forgot that the Caretaker first appeared in this arc and he's been a delight in his two appearances thus far. It's also really the final story arc where Vicki gets to be an important character. Sure she's a supporting player in the next arc and the only present character in 1795, but really that's all she has left to offer to the plot before becoming irrelevant in like 45 episodes time and the opening of the box.
