So it was announced that Philip Lawrence has created a new companion for the First Doctor due to debut this October. I'm just curious to see what you guys want from a new companion. I hope to have someone to contrast Ian and Barbara

The answer may seem general, but someone who exposes a new side of the Doctor, who can introduce a dynamic that we haven't seen yet or recently. Perhaps an older person, world weary who needs that spark of life reignited. He got on well with Cameca in The Aztecs. An Evelyn-like figure who can encourage the First Doctor's curiosity yet rein him in when he's about to get into trouble. Now I'm thinking about Evelyn finding the food machine and her reaction to it.
Evelyn: Oh yes, because nothing says fine dining like flavored Mars Bars. Sixth Doctor: I'll have you know that no one has complained about what comes out of this machine. Evelyn: Did they live to tell the tale of what they had out of this glorious machine? Sixth Doctor: They most certainly did. Evelyn: Well I'm not having food pills, I prefer to look at my food and feel it as I eat. Sixth Doctor: Fine, I'll show you the kitchen. It should be somewhere around here...

I would like a companion who isn't human. An alien race. We all to often have a human companion. Maybe some sort of half humanoid / cybernetic

Or something that taps into that sixties sci-fi aesthetic.

So it was announced that Simon Guerrier has created a new companion for the First Doctor due to debut this October. I'm just curious to see what you guys want from a new companion. I hope to have someone to contrast Ian and Barbara Unless there's another range somewhere I've missed, if we are talking the EAs it's not Simon.

I think the 5th Traveler's going to be the Classic Who version of Torchwood's Adam or Stargate SG-1s The Fifth Man rather than a new permanent companion[\spoiler]

mark687 Oh. Oh. I don't know why, but I thought this was for something else in 2017 maybe. It's a good hypothesis, there's certainly evidence for it. Five regulars all at once would be a bit of a handful for the Early Adventures.

What about a good Dalek similar to Rusty the Dalek as companion? That would create interesting conflict.

mark687 Indeed. I'm surprised to see folks thinking Jospa is a proper addition to the team. If nothing else, I'd have thought the placing was a dead giveaway. Surely BF would introduce a new companion in the first release of the season?EDIT: Though come to think of it, the EAs do jump Tardis teams... Still, the title and synopsis suggest that the story is centered around the oddity of Jospa's presence. Imagine if the Time Warrior were titled "The Feminist Journalist" or Rose were called "The Girl in the Shop." There are, of course, several ways that Mr. Guerrier could twist the conceit, e.g. having the Tardis crew perpetrate the sham, or having Jospa as a genuine companion whose comrades somehow forget about him.

Just to repeat - it's not Simon.

Maybe another member of "Them", someone who blackmails the Doctor in order to achieve their goal and forces the Doctor to open up to Ian and Barbara a little, which could account for the thaw in relations aboard the Ship.

Just to repeat - it's not Simon. He's the script editor. He'd know. Lemme do some checking and... Sweet, it's another Phillip Lawrence story. I loved Question Marks and his Action Figure Theatre stories are always interesting. I have a soft spot for his First Doctor and Mark Seven stories. You can find his stuff here: www.aftdownloads.co.uk/AFT/Actionfiguretheatre/who09/index.htm

My suspicion is that it's a romantic interest for Susan. She sneaks some boy onboard the TARDIS and watch the Doctor get upset.

Just to repeat - it's not Simon. Oops, sorry about that! I misinterpreted your previous post as saying that Simon Guerrier wasn't introducing a new companion. Seeing as I'd already seen the product page for The Fifth Traveler, that was doubly careless of me.

Guerrier is doing the Sontarans at the end of the season
