Seeing the news item of Big Finish going to the Day of the Cyberman Celebration later this year, got me wondering what, if anything, they had planned to mark the 50th anniversary of the Doctor’s Silver Nemesis. When I was younger I would have said that the Cybermen were my favourite Doctor Who villain/monster, but since the advent of Big Finish and the return of Doctor Who to the television my love for them has waned a little. Part of the reason for my original love was that I grew up watching Jon Pertwee and Tom Baker, so the Cybermen were more “mythical” than they are now. My view of them was powered by their icon image and my own imagination rather than their actual appearances on television. What I think they are missing is a figurehead villain like the Daleks have had with Davros and the Time Controller. But by their very nature it is hard to bring a more individual or human type presence to the Cybermen. The TV has recognised this problem with Miss Hartigan in The Next Doctor and the Eleventh Doctor fighting himself as the Cyber Controller in The Nightmare in Silver. That last one has got me wondering about the Doctor actually fighting himself... If the Cybermen capture the Doctor and only partially cyberise him; because they still needed his instinct and free-thought to help guide them. He would be a character akin to Star Trek’s Locutos of the Borg – a villain to be defeated, but if at all possible saved. So how about it being the Fifth Doctor as the Cyber Time-Man (Tin-Man?!). I like the idea of the “Nice Doctor” going nasty...

I like the idea of the “Nice Doctor” going nasty... Nightmare in Silver has made it a bit difficult continuity-wise to mess with a part-Cyberman Classic Doctor. As it's played in the episode, the Eleventh Doctor's originally very confident that they can't convert him and the Cybermen don't make any previous mention of doing so. That makes it a bit difficult for any story set pre-Eleventh Doctor to play with a similar concept where the Doctor is even slightly converted. Wouldn't the Doctor or even the Cybermen have some memory of such an occasion? Still, I can see the idea working if the Doctor is used to upgrade a Cyber Controller with his mental ability. A bit less exciting, yeah, but I don't recall an idea like that already in the Doctor Who continuity. Or maybe it's one of the Doctor's companions who's converted instead? As in PROPERLY converted, not just mind-controlled or whatnot. That could make for some dramatic storytelling.

Or an Unbound with a properly Cyber-Doctor?

Of course it doesn't have to be the Doctor. I have wondered if the Time Lords might try to adapt cyber-technology to enhance their soldiers in the Time War.
The Cyber-Lords!?

I haven't read it, but The Crystal Bucephalus features "Cyber Lords." Additionally, Interference makes mention of "Ogron Lords," i.e. Ogrons infused by the Timelords with Timelord-biodata.

The title "Cyber Lords" sound so good I am not surprised it has already been done, however "Ogron Lords" - really!?

"Ogron Lords" - really!? The name, if I recall correctly, was something of a joke, a deliberate contrast between the primitiveness of the ogrons and the creatures whose biodata they'd been given.

The Cyber-Lords were from David Banks' "Cybermen" history of the Cybermrn, it was implied they were the future of the Cybermen, an evolution from the "convert or destroy" mindset.

This is Big Finish, I'd imagine there are plans . I strongly suspect we're going to get a traditional length Third Doctor story as part of the celeberations and they might be pitted agasint McGann to further excite the audience coming in with River. Come to think of it, I wonder if they might feature in the Christmas special this year? Doctor Who will come back with a bang, anyway and it'd fit nicely into their anniversary and fit in nicely with the despondent Twelve.

I haven't bought the Third Doctor stories, but him facing the Cybermen may well change that. It would be nice if the TV show could, somehow include the Cybermen this year to celebrate there anniversary.

I see that the monthly range have a release entitled Quicksilver in December - that sounds like the Cybermen will return in time for Christmas!

A rather chilling end for Liv would be if she was converted to a Cyberman.....
