The Krotons - watched part 1 and 2 last night and finished it off today. Gosh those Gonds are a dim bunch. It's no wonder the Krotons have such trouble finding enough mental energy to power their spaceship. The story makes you feel like they've got a bright future ahead of them, but their head scientist just poured a bunch of chemicals in a vat and cheerfully said "the worst we can do is blow ourselves up!" So I don't think they'll be leading any Intergalactic Federations any time soon.
Onto The Seeds of Death part one now!

Going to re-watch this weeks episode, this time paying close attention to all the details I might have missed the first time while I was busy getting my chin back up from the floor. Maybe I get a few more theories as to what might be going on.

Funnily enough, the Gonds have just taken the rotating presidency of the Galactic Federation... Their head scientist is like my school chemistry teacher who on our final of teaching us in Y11 or 5th Year in old money asked us if we'd like to see how gunpowder was made?! The resulting explosion was a bit of an anticlimax. So, he then proceeded to take a crucible, put some water in it and put it outside. He then took a piece of potassium and gingerly dropped it into the crucible... BAANG!! No more crucible... Round of applause from us... "That's better..." smiled the chemistry teacher. "Got any caesium?" called out one wag!

I like the episode in general anyway though I'd give special praise to Matt, I think his scenes with Gambon are some of his best as The Doctor. We'd seen him do his Troughton-y stuff but him doing the quiet manipulator, the kind of 7th Doctor Moffat wrote in Continuity Errors for the Virgin short story books, is quite something.

Today I watched 'Galaxy 4' for the first time since I saw the (then) newly-rediscovered part 3 at the BFI.

The five(ish) Doctors reboot, surprisingly first time I’ve seen this. It’s very nice gentlely teasing satire with the loveliness of 5,6, and 7😄😊 I also love how many Who people they got to be in it😀 It was just the right comforting Doctor Who watch after an extremely hard stressful evening!😢😊

Peter Davison rightfully gets a lot of praise for it.
Peter also was challenged at last years convention to do another one for the next anniversary. After all, he has now several years of time. It is heartwarming and just lovely how much everybody is taking the **** out of themselves. And I was really amazed they got Peter Jackson and Ian McKellen to play along.
I am glad this could cheer you up a little.

I saw a video of a con panel with Davison, C. Baker, McCoy, and McGann all talking about making it. (This may not be 100% accurate as I saw it ages ago and have no idea how to find it again, but) My understanding was that Peter Jackson and Ian McKellen specifically requested to be a part of it. Peter is a huge Doctor Who fan himself, and Sir Ian had already appeared in the show by that point so he already had some history with it. I'm pretty sure almost everyone in it asked to be part of it. It explains the kind of nonsensical opening scene between Sean Pertwee and Olivia Coleman I seem to recall Peter saying it was originally almost a fan film kind of thing, but as more people heard about it the more official it became, eventually becoming an actual BBC production. Paul even admitted that he'd already recorded Night of the Doctor before doing his bit for Five(ish) and wasn't allowed to tell the others he had done it either! It was quite a nice little panel discussion (Like I say, I'm not 100% certain all of that is true, but I am certain Paul recorded Night of the Doctor first because I can still remember the slightly guilty look on his face when he said it )

Masque of Mandragora - I kinda don't remember this one very well other than being a semi-historical. Pretty good so far, actually.

Hello again. Just found this lovely montage of Elisabeth Sladen's wonderful character Sarah Jane Smith. Elisabeth brought a touch of class to Classic Who, NuWho and both her spinoffs. The Sarah Jane Adventures really showcased her talent. Much missed and never forgotten. www.youtube.com/watch?v=pRPjHfcB8oQ

After work this evening I've watched the second half of 'The Myth Makers'... Well, it might have taken me (almost) 15yrs, but I do believe I have finally seen every episode of 'DW' ever made*... * Ok, counting the cutdown of 'Marco Polo' on the 'Edge Of Destruction' DVD, but -

The Curse of Peladon
Somewhat ironically I’ve watched this for the first time just after last week’s events.
All in all a good story, with a well developed alien culture, a decent cast of characters and the Third Doctor and Jo on fine form.
One flaw-why does Arcturus shoot at the Doctor at the end of Part 3? He exposes his entire plot by doing that...for seemingly no reason.

One flaw-why does Arcturus shoot at the Doctor at the end of Part 3? He exposes his entire plot by doing that...for seemingly no reason. I love it. The smoky, dimly lit halls of the Citadel filled with political scheming, great story. As for what Arcturus did...
I think Arcturus was desperate, the last throw of the dice. Under Peladon law, when the Doctor wins his trial by combat, he and his claims about a secret world below the Citadel will be proven right and so the King will have to act. Hepesh will be (at least) removed from office and imprisoned and there will be no alliance with Arcturus' world. Peladon will almost certainly join the Federation. If the Doctor dies, then in the resulting chaos Hepesh's coup might still succeed and he will make the alliance with the world of Arcturus outside the federation. If the Doctor lives, they have definitely lost. So Arcturus does (of course) the logical thing - try to kill the Doctor at any cost. (Peladon is not under Federation jurisdiction, so what could they do? Possibly suspend or expel the world of Arcturus from the Federation, but would they care, if they had their 'hands' on Peladon's wealth?)

The Monster of Peladon
Not as good as the original, and like a few Pertwee stories over 4 parts it feels like it could have lost an episode’s worth of content and been stronger for it. Still there’s a lot to like here too; Sarah’s characterisation (The women’s lib scene with the Queen would trigger a wave of clickbait meltdowns if aired today), the Queen’s arc, Peladon is still a well constructed culture and it’s nice to see the more normal people’s view on things as opposed to the lords and priests.
Also Sarah, whilst mourning for (actually not dead) Doctor, mentions how he always said ‘where there’s life, there’s-‘ before being interrupted-is that intentional foreshadowing of third Doctor’s death?
Little political note as well-The criticisms of the Federation membership not being seen as benefiting those outside the elites is rather prescient in light of Brexit, considering the Federation is an analogy for the EEC/EU.

Sometime ago, I wrote up a retrospective of the fanedits I was doing at the time. (Still am, mind, just haven't stumbled across the right platform yet.) I discovered something rather interesting about how you could restructure The Monster of Peladon. It actually fits rather splendidly into a four-parter with a few scenes from the first three rearranged to accommodate. The remaining three episodes can essentially be viewed as writ (or filmed, rather). I'd written up a list of cuts and arrangements here for anyone who'd like to try and make a new "Part One" for themselves.
