There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

So I watched Timelash. Oh dear. It is not too bad if you watch it with the "it's so bad it's good" glasses on. I think Colin's assessment is right and this is indeed not really a "classic". However, I really enjoyed the H.G. Wells character. He was great. Otherwise... I did not mind the tinsel tunnel so much, it was more the non-sensical plot and the complete waste of Peri as meaningful character. Poor Nicola. I will save the audio commentary for the next few days. And now I am re-watching the Haunting of Villa Diodati. I absolutely love it. It is so dark, atmospheric and creepy. Well done. Really looking forward to seeing the next episode tomorrow. Toby Hadoke interview Nicola Bryant for his Who’s Round podcast. She told a story about the scene where she was tied up in Timelash. There was a break for lunch but because of the time taken to get her tied up, she offered to just wait on set, still tied up, and got some obeys else to get her some food for after the scene. Anyway the director (Pennant Roberts) waited with her and suddenly said, “I’m sorry, Nicola.” She replied with “Its not a problem, I’m just trying to save time.” He shook his head. “No,” he said, and waved at the set and at the studio in general, “I meant about all this.”

There's a fairly serviceable 25-minute two-parter lurking somewhere beneath Timelash's surface, but the padding just absolutely smothers it. The novelisation (ahh, the things we read for art) actually does a pretty good job of smoothing over some of the narrative problems and providing payoff for a lot of "Part One"'s set-up. A great deal of thought has been put into how Karfel is peopled and their role within that society. I'm trying to think of the story that best serves Peri as not just a foil for the Doctor, but as a character, outside of Planet of Fire. Maybe Vengeance on Varos with the Governor? My favourite scene is the one where she explains love to Yrcarnos in Mindwarp. For such an antagonistic time -- mid-80s television characters were typically just brutal to one another -- it was nice to get a sense of comradery and completeness in the friendship between Peri, Yrcarnos and Dorf. It could've been so superficial, but between Bryant and Blessed, it ends up as something rather bittersweet. Particularly with all the history for the Doctor and Peri that's happened since 1986.

With the Chamaeleon Airlines arrival from 1967 due to land on March 16th, I enjoyed another animated evening with The Macra Terror.
Great work. Yes, there were quite a few changes made in this one, some for animating budget to avoid 'costume' changes, some for extra drama and some minor changes I don't really see the point of, but the Macra look great and I liked the results. And we certainly can't complain about the 'extras'; I also enjoyed the recons version with Anneke Wills' commentary, and the main commentary / interviews are well worth hearing.
Unlikely as it once seemed, there are such things as Season 4 stories on my shelf and I'm looking forward to adding the next one soon!

The War Games in preparation for the three-part Cyber-saga that will be waiting at the end of this current season. It's kind of interesting, The Daleks Master Plan can be split quite distinctively into two halves if needed. There's no lead-in from "The Feast of Steven" to "Volcano", so it could easily sit as a seven-parter on one side and a five-parter on the other. The War Games, on the other hand, lacks that definitive split that separates the story out into smaller sectors. However, I think I've got how they structured it from a scripting standpoint. Why it keeps the interest from beginning to end. It's all interconnected, but it can be split into smaller "acts". There's the three-episode mystery story that begins on the battlefield, the War Lord intrigue that runs for six episodes and a final one-off coda that takes place on Gallifrey. A would-be four-parter, hijacked by a six-parter and concluded very definitively by the Time Lords in (quite literally) one fell swoop. It's rather clever.

At home: Oxygen With my DW viewing group: Smith and Jones, The Shakespeare Code.
Watching some RTD with my group and finding that I miss it sooo much. There's a subtlety under the Tennant brashness. A self-assuredness to the performance and the writing that I have been missing in my Who for a while now. These aren't even near the best episodes of the era, but I still found myself finding them so much better that what we have gotten over the last few years. Sigh...
(And watching Shakespeare right after listening to The Kingmaker. Ha!)

(And watching Shakespeare right after listening to The Kingmaker. Ha!) The production feels really solid in the RTD era. Not unlike watching a bit of Danger Man or the Hinchcliffe years of the show. They tried very hard to build up a particular image for their tenure and each episode feels like it takes a page from Gerry Anderson's shows; i.e. we're doing a movie every week. And they were able to sustain that for five(ish) years. Not bad, not bad at all.

Last night I watched Part 2 (the only existing episode) of The Space Pirates as part of my ongoing Troughton rewatch. I remember so little about this story that it basically feels brand new. This one gets a bad rap and, yeah, it's pretty weak in places. The conversation between Hermack and Madeleine is full of the clunkiest exposition imaginable and a whole lot of what TV Tropes calls "As You Know" dialogue. Look at this: H: Well, because of the rumours connecting him with the death of your father, Dom Issigri. M: Well, I tried to prove that at the time but nobody knows what happened between them, so now I prefer to forget it. H: But you took over the argonite holdings from your father and split away from Clancey. M: Yes. H: And now you run the most successful argonite mining business in the galaxy, while Clancey, because of your competition must be pretty nearly bankrupt. The phrase "your father Dom Issigri" is particularly egregious. Imagine someone saying that to you - "your father Firstname Lastname" - in a normal sentence. Anyway, after Space Pirates 2, I moved onto my feature presentation for the night, The Seventh Seal. It might not be Who but it convinced me that these three dudes are three incarnations of the same Time Lord:

Horror of Fang Rock - Leela is hilarious in this story. I forgot she slapped Adelaide right in the face for wailing continually. Too bad the Rutans wound up so under used while the Sontarans kept coming back. I think actually seeing their war occasionally would be neat.

Honestly, given his recent take on the Cybermen, I'd love to see Chibnall do a Sontaran/Rutan story, possibly as a two-part finale. There's so much potential in this conflict that's almost never been explored and given how visually stunning the show is at the moment I think it could really make not only a great story but quite the spectacle too!

I've always hoped they would be back one day - as someone (forget who and when exactly) once said in a CD 'extra': 'I'm rooting for the Rutans!' That would be a great return now they could be done properly. And a very nice tribute to Terrance Dicks too.

So far today I've watched 'Spyfall' part 1 (I have part 2 playing in the background as I write) and 'Power Of The Daleks' part 3 (part 4 is on the 'schedule' for later this evening alongside 'The Silurians' part 5 &, time allowing 'Fugitive Of The Judoon'...)

And we've just had one Python in...let's aim for the moon and get Eric Idle in too so we can have The Rutan Invasion Of Rutland starring The Rutles! Or would that leave us in a creative....rut?

(If the Sontarans are 'potatoes' why shouldn't their arch-enemies disguise themselves as other veg? Glowing pulsating veg of course!)

I think that's my classic trifecta. Love to see more Rutans, Alien Bodies-style Krotons or Voord (for what must make a fascinating dinner party).
