So can I... (Translated from the original Venusian) 'Oh close your eyes, my little one. Well, three of them at least...'I've got one of the ancient variations sung in the novel, Venusian Lullaby, written down somewhere. Lemme just... *rummage* *rummage* *rummage* Ah-ha. Here it is: They should bring back Venusian lullabies back to the tv series or big finish 😊

I've got one of the ancient variations sung in the novel, Venusian Lullaby, written down somewhere. Lemme just... *rummage* *rummage* *rummage* Ah-ha. Here it is: They should bring back Venusian lullabies back to the tv series or big finish 😊 Oh, it's in there, a crooning lullaby from time to time. I'm trying to remember the most recent instance I've heard of it. I think it was with the First Doctor, Steven and Sara in one of their stories, from memory. It's got a long and celebrated history those cradlesongs. Originally, millions of years in the past, there's evidence to suggest that they began as more than a few nursery rhymes of Earth do -- as bawdy rhymes and limmericks. That transformed over time into the lullaby that the Venusians used to soothe their bud-children to rest. It existed for long enough that traces of it could still be found millions of years later by archaeologists like Bernice Summerfield in her own native era. The Toymaker had a Venusian mechanic prisoner circa the 20th century, so its probable that the people survived where the ancient civilisation had long ago passed into memory. That lullaby being one of the oldest surviving texts of their culture. A Beowulf or Epic of Gilgamesh, of sorts. Interestingly... There's evidence to suggest that it was accidentally reintroduced into a new Venusian society by Henry Gordon Jago (well, naturally ) while travelling with the Doctor.

We should have more Venusian singing in Big Finish!😊

Finished my McCoy complete rewatch the other day, care of the excellent value Britbox. Some of the earlier stories in this era come across really quite well for atmosphere, characters and design but somehow don’t quite strike gold... I am a fan of Kandyman though, I have to say. When this era is good, it’s very good. Particularly, and somewhat gallingly, towards the end. I know you all know this, but I just wanted to vent! We get a glimpse of things starting to get into top gear with the daleks and then from the Greatest Show in the Galaxy onwards, we’re doing very nicely indeed. A funny thing, I remember being appalled at the cheetah people the first time I saw them many, many moons ago, but actually they’re not at all that bad. Quite well done actually. Strange how things get better with age sometimes! Another thought. Imagine if the classic doctors had their series now. They were really good then, but with the additional support the show gets now, they would be amazing! Luckily we have Big Finish of course, who regularly show us how good things can be.

The Faceless Ones, a very boring story.

Attack of the Cybermen (Eric Saward)
A Cybermen story that wouldn’t be so bad if it didn’t try to be a sequel to every Cybermen story ever made!
And unlike some others, I never found the violence that gratuitous or unnecessary. Would only make logical sense for a species such as the Cybermen to take advantage of the fragility of flesh.

Aye, though we hunted high and low, and hunted everywhere, of the three men's fate we found no trace. In any time, in any place. But a door ajar and an untouched needle and an over-toppled chair. The HORROR OF FANG ROCK! This is a second watch for me, eight years since the first. I'd forgotten the class element of the story - the Doctor treats the rich folk with contempt, but the honest working men - Harker and the lighthouse crew - are treated as trusted allies. Adelaide says herself that Palmerdale is a millionaire - what more could he want? (After all, Vince is amazed at the idea of getting fifty pounds!) But it's greed that does them in - bringing them to the lighthouse and turning them against each other. Skinsale talks a big fight, with his tales of past glories (note it's India he's talking about, with all its colonial connotations!) but in the end, he's undone by stupidity, greed and honour. But alas, it's the working class men on the front line, and they are the ones who die first, while Palmerdale and his entourage are safely tucked away. What a tale.
And all in a spooky lighthouse!
Other highlights included:
- The Doctor and Leela's explanation of the size of their ship. - Tom Baker in that bowler hat. I'd have had him grab it on the way out of the lighthouse keep it for a few more stories! - "Are you in charge here?" "No, but I'm full of ideas." - After Leela breaks down the door, the Doctor has this non sequitur: "The Malicious Damage Act 1861 covers lighthouses." "What?" "Nothing." - "Rutan, that's the empty rhetoric of a defeated dictator, and I don't like your face, either." - That whole scene, actually - it's Tom Baker sitting on a staircase and casually chatting with an angry, crackling jellyfish! What more could you want? - Also, the poem I quoted above ties a beautiful bow on the tale - even if it is undercut a tad by the shot of that adorable scale-model TARDIS!

My Season 14 set came yesterday FINALLY, so to celebrate today... I put it on the shelf for later and watched Frontier in Space instead. I was craving a great Pertwee story today, what can I say?

All Pertwee stories are by definition, great!
Actually I do really like FiS, there's the spacewalk stunt towards the end that looks like pure 'filler' on a complete run-through but that's it. Even though it was meant to be viewed in weekly instalments as a 'Saturday Matinee' style serial, it still holds up well in longer sections too imo. And oh that reveal when the Master's allies show themselves! I can still remember the excitement of that moment and it's getting on for 50 years.

Resurrection of the Daleks - When Davros says he was conscious of every moment of his 90-year incarceration, I can't help but think of his monologue from Davros (the MR story). It's nice when BF can retroactively supplement the TV series like that.

Deep Breath and Last Christmas
I watch these episodes a lot but I think they are flawed but beautiful in terms of what they do with 12 and Clara and their relationship. I also love the endings of these episodes especially! Deep Breath’s ending from the heartbreaking “ I’m not your boyfriend” (it’s so sad how self defeatist he is thinking she won’t want him that way now that he’s changed) to the “Just See Me” and the awkward heartwarming hug! Last Christmas with the magical sleigh ride, 12 and Clara getting a second chance and Clara kissing him on the cheek with the heart appearing on the curtains in the background( I always get a bit misty eyed by that bit! These are total comfort episodes which is why I watched them on my birthday 😊
Side note: I think the “I’m not your boyfriend” line gets misinterpreted a lot, where people assume he means he doesn’t want any romance with Clara, when it could not be further from the truth. I think its a heartbreaking self defeat moment of 12 mistakenly thinking that Clara won’t want him anymore that way now that he’s changed into someone older, and fiercer. This gets disproven of course( just look at Mummy on the Orient Express), but in the moment it’s still heartbreaking,
Side note:I am glad they didn’t end Last Christmas with Clara being old and that being her exit, because I think the ending as it is here is beautiful and uplifting and always leaves me a bit misty eyed!
Side note: I would be very curious to know what exactly 12 and Clara get up to in between Last Christmas and Magian's Apprentice, I have my head cannon for that though and let’s just I think they had a very eventful time of it😉

I cannot tell you how many times I have re-watched it.
Oh, and there is also Missy in this. Bonus.

Malcolm Hulke was terribly good at that. Didn't see the episode prior? Didn't see any of the story prior? Not to worry, the Doctor and/or his companion will gently ease you back into the story and give you a refresher course. Modular, without being disjointed. Frontier's got some nice little moments of dialogue too:

Planet of Fire - Kind of a meh story. I'm unconvinced swapping Turlough for Peri was a fair trade. Her accent is way worse in this than I remembered.

Frontier in Space, eps 5 & 6, followed by two of the DVD extras: the making-of documentary The Space War & the rather fun pseudo-documentary The Perfect Scenario.
I think Delgado just might have been at his finest in this story - the Master seems so comfortable here, and has such great chemistry with Jo and the Doctor. It's a shame he doesn't continue on into Planet of the Daleks, and an even greater shame that this was his last appearance in Doctor Who.
