Kicking off my day today with Remembrance of the DaleksEDIT: That was a really solid, enjoyable revisit. Earlier today also did The Happiness Patrol, which is exactly as dreadful as I remember it. Got Silver Nemesis on now and hoping for the best (it's probably been 15 years since I've seen any of these stories). Closing in on the end of The Greatest Show in the Galaxy right now. This is....quite a bit better than I remember (I came into it remembering that I hated it). Granted it's far too long (basically nothing happens in part 3, which tells me it only needed to be a 3-part story instead of four), and the idea of the Doctor distracting the 'gods of ragnarok' with magic tricks is quite silly, but I'm genuinely surprised at how decent it is this time around.

Fury from the Deep
Oh damn that was good. Victoria’s departure is very nicely done, Oak & Quill are very unsettling (even more so in that surviving bit of footage, some prime nightmare fuel) and all the characters well performed. The more of the Troughton era that gets animated, the more I like it,

The more of the Troughton era that gets animated, the more I like it, Dudley Simpson pops his head out of the woodwork again for a truly atmospheric score. The close to "Episode Three" with one of the characters walking out into the bleak grey sea is one of my favourite images. It harkens back to the "promise" cliffhangers of the Hartnell era. There's no fanfare, no uproarous thunder of imagery, just a quiet, terrible knowing. Tough to do in animation, but I think they pull it off.

At the moment I'm wrapping up the first 'Classic' series with 'The Reign Of Terror', which I've been pleasantly enjoying.
As with 'The Keys Of Marinus' a couple of weeks ago, I think my opinion of this one has been helped by the fact that I've been watching it across six evenings rather than 'all in one go', (Marinus in particular!)

It's been long enough since I've seen this that I probably won't know the difference, but what the heck, I have the option

I notice particularly in this one so far that the cleanup of the video is the same mixed blessing as when Star Trek TOS was remastered: a lot of the time it looks great, but during closeups on faces, you can now see how terrible the makeup looks.

Watching Season 8 3rd Doctor "Terror Of The Autons" with my boy. The 1st episode is a tad too blurry for some reason . HHMMM Up to episode 3 and Junior is still transfixed.. He knows about "Bessie" and he knows he will soon "change into my favourite doctor.. FOUR!".

Funnily enough, the bit that got me was the spray when the daffodils were activated. The troll dolls and policemen, nah, but the mask was chilling. A really effective moment. I'm with Junior, the Auton on a tumble was pretty spiffing, too. Even more amazing as an adult when you learn the stuntman was actually struck by the car. For real. It was mistimed and he fell a hell of a lot further than intended, crawling up onto his hands and knees to complete the take. That's dedication to your craft.

Having another go at Inferno. I like the third Doctor. And the cast are fine. I am just still not on board with the Primords. I still think they are ridiculous and just squeezed in there so we can have some kind of monster. Although the story had enough to stand on itself without guys in body paint going "ugh ugh". Unnecessary.

My Season 8 blu-ray came in the mail a month earlier than I was expecting, so to celebrate I watched Terror of the Autons last night!
Personally, as far as Auton stories go, I much prefer Spearhead from Space, but Terror is still a delight and it’s carried in no small part by Roger Delgado. It does seem a little clear here that they weren’t entirely sure how well the Master and the Doctor knew each other at this point, because to me this read as though the two were just encountering each other. If I’d been listening to The Destination Wars or The Home Guard then moved on to this story, I feel like it’d be more apparent. Perhaps I missed something here?

Colony in Space on Blu-ray.
My first viewing of Season 8 outside of comparison clips for the FX updates in Terror of the Autons. I picked Colony because, of all the stories in the season, it's the one that felt the least colourful. In terms of imagery, it's a lot of "used future" greys, browns with the occassional flourish of green or red thrown in for good measure. I was curious to see what I'd pick up from the upscaled and remastered footage.
As it turns out, the most prominent thing that stuck out for me was we get a good showing of the micro-expressions on the actors faces. For instance, with Ashe, we get to focus on the haggard look around his eyes as he struggles to keep the colonists together. His frustration at the crop failures and worry that his people are going to starve. Contrast that with Captain Dent whose by-the-book murdering never betrays anything beyond the vaguest hint of emotion. A tightness to the lip, a straighter back, and that's pretty much it. The Master, naturally, just saunters his way through the desperate situation on his Adjudicating coattails and the footage nicely amplifies that, likewise.
(Side note: The Doctor Who universe is bristling with doppelgangers, so there's plausible deniability, but the face of the real Adjudicator is "played" by Graeme Harper -- also one of the Morbius Doctors. A bit surreal, these days, given the ongoing discourse. The Master may have unknowingly stolen another Doctor's cover identity and, what's more, the Doctor likely still has those identification papers on him after the serial's done.)

I thought that when I was watching it the other week. I even trawled through the story's TARDIS Wiki I was so sure it was Graeme, and it was! Is it even the same photo as used in Morbius?

Oh, wow, this is wild... According to research done by Paul Hanley for the Forgotten Lives anthology, yeah, it looks to be the same image! Opens up an interesting puzzle box of possibilities, doesn't it? (I mean, the Harper Doctor could've been there when the Crab Nebula went up, as the Master related to Three in the City, all those centuries ago...)

Every day I watch a bit of Who on youtube with my boy on our giant sized tv.. Last night I showed him a bit of 5th Doctor era with the Mara being defeated by the circle of mirrors.. We watched a bit of "Meglos" and "Twin Dilemma". He has seen all the regenerations multiple times. The 1 thing I won't show him yet is Adric's death.
