Continuing my off/on New Who marathon with Series 6. A mixed bag overall; I appreciate the ambition behind the arc but execution is messy and it doesn’t quite work. The standalone episodes are better than I’d remembered though.

From a brief set of musings on the "Meet Hebe" thread... The Sea Devils. There's a school of thought that the last Dalek story we had in the classic series until 1987 was Death to the Daleks. By which I mean that the Daleks themselves were present in Genesis, Destiny, Resurrection and Revelation, but took more of a backseat to the machinations of Davros. The focus was on him. I enjoy the heck out of The Sea Devils, it's a great story and an unusual one for being Earthbound, but otherwise UNIT-free... But, I think there's a solid point to be made that the seafaring Silurians are more a feature, than the focus. Much of the story actually centres on the Master and his machinations to free himself from his prison. Some interesting points on the rewatch: - This is the second time that Malcolm Hulke nearly predicts The Spy Who Loved Me from five years later. The first was in an episode of Danger Man which featured Drake teaming up with a Soviet spy to solve a problem mutually destructive to both their countries. In this, it's the submarine hijack. I'm thinking of The Ark in Space and Alien again (or Earthshock and Aliens). Doctor Who has this remarkable ability to just tap into the zeitgeist of a decade just a couple years early.
- This might be one of the very few times the Master becomes peeved enough to go: "Right, I've had enough of your shenanigans; knife in the back of the neck, Doctor." It's quite striking even on the rewatch.
- There's less moral ambiguity in some aspects here than in The Silurians. Rather than it being a bunker filled with scientists and civilians (echoing Wenley Moor's human installation), the Sea Devils are portrayed very much like a working military. The counterpoint to the human naval forces. That said... It's not clear whether or not the Master intended to dispose of the Sea Devils and usurp their place. There are moments in the story which are almost a twisted retelling of the Doctor's own efforts at cross-species cooperation in The Silurians. The difference here going back to the Master's philosophy of "Rule or serve," from Colony in Space. It's for his own benefit, rather than that of the humans, in contrast to the Doctor's case. Nevertheless, despite their selfish and selfless aims, the betrayal comes as heavily to him as it did to his old school chum1.
(1 - There's a very, very deeply buried sage-like quality to the Third Doctor in the Letts era sometimes. There a few stories which portray him as someone who's got more than a few life lessons under their belt from their travels.)

Started on the E-Space trilogy because it just became available on German Prime. After I have seen Adric die several times already, I now, for the first time, see him for the first time.

Fellow watchers of Who, a question to test your memory: what is the fastest a Doctor and companion have gone from exiting the TARDIS to being shot at in the classic series?
I'm rewatching The Android Invasion and am currently at three minutes into "Part One" for record time.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

Ohhh... It's just under a minute-and-a-half before they blow the quarry. Oof, we have our Number #2. With a bang. (It might also get a special mention for being the quickest into danger purely by accident.)

Surely that would be something like The Curse of Peladon - stepping out of the ship straight onto the side of a mountain in a thunderstorm, with the TARDIS moments away from plummeting to the bottom. Although the end of The Rescue tops that by having the TARDIS fall off the ledge before anyone could even disembark

No, there is a comic book company called Cutaway Comics that make spin-off Doctor Who stories & they include dvds with their comics that have bonus features like audio commentaries. This one is from Lytton issue 4 - New audio commentary for THE VISITATION with MATTHEW WATERHOUSE (Adric) and ERIC SAWARD (writer/script editor), moderated by the BFI's JUSTIN JOHNSON.

Although the end of The Rescue tops that by having the TARDIS fall off the ledge before anyone could even disembark I actually love the idea that the Doctor's watching the TARDIS crash into the valley below and the reason he's so calm is that he's thinking to himself -- Well, at least, I'm not inside this time...I wouldn't mind being a fly on the wall to the conversation that happened among the Time Lord technicians who made the choice: #1: "Just a few degrees to the left?" #2: "The left?" #1: "Yes, you know," he gestures, "topographically-speaking." #2: "Oh! Oh, I see!" #1: "Should get them a corridor so closer." #3: "Is this wise?" #2: "It's only an integer, administrator. Barely anything on a cosmic scale." #1: "Yes, what's the worst that can happen?" #3: [stares] #1: [uncomfortable smile, coughs] "To us. What's the worst that could happen to us."

As the animated version was released yesterday, I made my way through 'Evil Of The Daleks'. Whilst I'm not going to say that it's neccessarily a favourite of mine, it was a pleasant-enough way to have spent a few hours on a Monday afternoon/evening...

Evil Of The Daleks.
This the best animation the bluray range has given us - absolutely superb.
You MUST watch it in black & white though - the gothic tones and shadows of Maxtable's house, where most of the story is set, is Gothic akin to Rebecca or Jane Eyre, so the monochrome doesn't just help it, it is a featured part of just why it's so good.
I love the option to watch either the whole thing animated or to insert the existing ep 2 (which I chose to do). It really does cater to all needs. I've had this story in recons, audio and Target novel but this was the first time I felt like I was watching it "for real". More than any animation it felt like a rediscovered story more than an animation, so high was the quality.
There are shots from high with moonlight the only thing illuminating the room while Daleks escort Victoria. Looks stunning. There are tonnes of places in ere that just look like perfect screenshot. There's so much love in it.
I've always said David Whittaker has to be the most consistent Dalek writer for doing this and Power to bookend Troughton's S4. This just cements that.
Wonderful. Now, I don't love Galaxy 4 - let's see if animation helps the missing half of that in 7 weeks!
