Cold Blood. Not as good as I remembered, this is definitely the flabby bit in the middle of season 5.

Started watching a reconstruction of The Massacre, a story I've long been curious about despite having read the novelization.
I'm curious (a) to see William Hartnell playing a villain instead of his usual role, and (b) to see Peter Purves take center stage as the hero of the story. This sort of thing almost never happened in the classic series.
Episode #1 was a bit dull, but I'm hoping it will pick up as events unfold.

I watched episode 2 on Saturday, watching one episode a week, like in the old days. More happens, but I'm not very clear what. I think the reconstruction is part of the problem, in that I'm finding it hard to remember who's who. But also, everyone's actions and motivations are incomprehensible. It's like you need to be a history major to understand and enjoy it.

The only context I can think of in which she'd merit a reappearance would be a story further exploring the Church of the Mainframe, which, come to think of it, is bound to happen. So yeah, I guess she probably will come back. EDIT: In Big Finish, I mean.

Vincent and the Doctor. I cried. again. Gets me every single time. I really think that just might be the greatest piece of Doctor Who ever made.

Remind anyone of someone else? If she had a character that wasn't just River 2.0 then maybe she'd be worth using again. As it stands she'd be very, very low on my list of characters to hear from again.

It just struck me when I watched DOTD that we "assume" she is River, when over the last couple of tv series there have been a couple of characters that could be classed as psychopaths appearing and I was curious ... she seems to be more hated than Clara on here lol Cheers Tony

The other psychos dont have romantic pasts with The Doctor and he hasn't taught them to fly the TARDIS. Tasha isn't popular because she's a redundant non-character.

Yeah, she was a real missed opportunity. It was quite bizarre how exactly much like River she was. I get the feeling that Madame Kovarian and River were supposed to have been in the story but they couldn't get the actresses so had to rewrite under pressure to introduce a replacement character, meaning she came out as a poor mashup of the two.

Yes, I agree with all of these comments. A much poorer version of River.

I also think it ranks as the best DW ever. It's probably one of the best pieces of television, period. ~ Watching through a Whoflix fanedit of The Web Planet. Anyone who is bored to tears by the original's seemingly relentless amount of padding, this condenses it all down to an hour and fifteen minutes (roughly the length of a traditional three-parter). It's a pretty taut and nicely handled story with all the fat trimmed away actually, the Doctor playing a double game as codebreaker for the Animus. All in all, quite a lot of fun. The similarities between it and the story for the second half of The Twin Dilemma are pretty eerie though. The Doctor in cahoots with an insectan enemy lead by a seemingly omnipotent hostile entity.

Interesting... That reminds me of the existence of that LP that condenses Genesis of the Daleks to 90 minutes. I've always considered The Web Planet to be a criminally underrated story. It's wonderfully weird and alien, in a way that few Who stories manage to be. But I can see why trimming the filler would be beneficial (though half the story seems a bit much!)

Today I watched The Day of The Doctor and The Time of The Doctor. Who IS Tasha Lem..? Cheers Tony She was going to be River Song, but Alex Kingston was in the US/Canada filming with Arrow at the time. John Barrowman's commitments to the same show may be a factor in the lack of new televised Torchwood. Arthur Darvill plays a big role in the new Arrow spin-off that's starting this week (US time).

He's definitely a bit ruthless with his cuts, but in this case it really doesn't hurt the story at all. The pacing is pitch perfect, it has a breathless energy to it that just sweeps you along. It reminded me a little bit of The Caves of Androzani in that respect actually. Vortis has got to be one of my favourite worlds, I love what Daniel O'Mahony did with it all in Return to the Web Planet. There's always this strange sense every time a story comes back to it that there's more to explore, it grows in a way that most planets don't seem to in longtime series. You can find the fanedit here: whoflix.wordpress.com/2012/07/04/the-web-planet/
