Capaldi hasn't filmed DW since 26th September. With no new series until 2017, Capaldi might not have signed a contract. Have the BBC paid Capaldi for 8 months to do nothing? For a show that you don't seem to enjoy at all and clearly hasn't been able to please you in the past 12 years, you sure do keep a close eye on things. Got to fill your time with something!

Don't know if its wishful thinking, but I think that Paul McGann has already filmed the Christmas Special. True, series 10 filming started yesterday, but nowhere have the words "Christmas Special" been mentioned. Another clue has been the delay in filming. The BBC originally said filming would start in May, then changed to June. Perhaps filming did start in May. Of course, series 10 could include Christmas, but I hope not. Hmm...I've read various conflicting reports/rumours that the 2016 Xmas special has already started filming, or it's part of production Block 1/2 (I think production block 1 will be the opening episode of series 10, probably a two parter again), but it's been confirmed that Bill is debuting in Series 10 not in the Xmas special, as it is stand alone and 20 years since the TV Movie bringing back 8 for a guest role, does on paper sound like a good idea to build hype etc (and McGann mentioned in an interview on youtube a few months back, that he bumped into Moffat randomly in London and asked whether another return was on the cards, Moffat apparently cryptically replied 'keep in shape' but he could have been joking, and as it's a show about time travel a return is always on the cards for anyone...) and Capaldi and McGann have worked together before... ...but let's be brutally honest here, McGann's Doctor is more or less unknown or forgotten by the vast majority of viewers, Moffat seemed to have decided to bring McGann back in NOTD because he wanted to complete the set of regeneration's, rather than any pressing desire to see 8 return again (the results, in which he captured 8's personalty perfectly and gave him a very fitting send off were a lucky, happy accident), NOTD was hugely popular with fans but it was an internet minisode with limited reach or impact on casual audiences, Moffat and RTD before have had over a decade to bring McGann back for a full story, and they haven't, given the show has been off screen for a year, it's probably more likely they'll bring back a popular recurring character such as Captain Jack, or Martha or cast a big name in a guest role, there's certainly no way the BBC or Capaldi would agree to 8 having his own episode. Don't get me wrong I'd love to see my two favourite Doctors interact on screen, but their have been McGann rumours almost every year since the show returned in 2005, and only once were they proven right...

No actor who plays the current Doctor Who is going to countenance someone else getting to play the part instead of them in the big highlight of Christmas Day episode. "Aye that'll be right." would be the mildest of replies. Capaldi hasn't filmed DW since 26th September. With no new series until 2017, Capaldi might not have signed a contract. Have the BBC paid Capaldi for 8 months to do nothing? I read somewhere that Capaldi's initial contract was for 2 Series, with an optional 3rd, obviously he's taken the option, but more recent reports have said he was also given the option of a 4th year at the same time (as was Smith I believe), and Capaldi himself has confirmed he was asked to stay on past S10, but hasn't made his mind up yet (S10 will probably be filming for the next 10 months, so he's easily got a year to go before he comes to a decision), so I'd assume/hope if he does stay he'll be signing a new 3-4 year (not necessarily series) contract and bow out with Chibnall...

I read it was an initial one year with an option for a second. There was then a delay and he didn't sign up to another 1+1 until halfway through series 9. Since he reportedly has an option for series 11, and we know the BBC want him back, all he has to do is decide. Hope he decides yes.

Actually Moffat has always wanted to write for 8. I think he was initially contacted about writing for BF if i remember the rumour rightly Not a rumour. It's covered in the Benjamin Cook Inside Story book. Moffat was present at the first BF meeting and dropped out when he learned that the rights to use Eight hadn't been secured. At the Regeneration Who convention back in March, Jason Haigh-Ellery said Moffat was actually very annoyed and stormed out of the room. Just recently Moffat named "The Night of the Doctor" as his "desert island" episode: www.radiotimes.com/news/2015-12-02/steven-moffat-talks-ratings-misogyny-casting-missy-ashildrs-end-game-the-next-companion-and-leaving-doctor-who

Regards mark687 I think they said before Pearl Mackie's debut would be the first episode but I guess they must have either changed their mind or Bill appears at Christmas. No other reason for fake snow.

Regards mark687 Stories such as The Unquiet Dead and Planet of the Ood had snow, but they weren't Christmas specials - I still think Bill won't debut until episode one of the new series.

I wonder if he turned it down because was a Huge fan of the 8th Doctor (he has praised McGann's performance in the TV movie on several occasions, I wonder if he was a fan of the BBC EDA?) or merely because he wanted the hype/freedom of writing for a basically brand new doctor I swear Moffat mentioned somewhere the S9 finale was inspired by some old ideas he had thought up for Big Finish...I said it when it initially aired, but I can really picture McGann in Heaven Sent (and Capaldi in Scherzo...). Very interesting...

Much as other people are tired of him, I do hope Moffat gives thought to writing a story for Big Finish now that he has a bit more time on his hands. He's done some great work for the show when he's on his A-game - some of the show's very best, in my opinion. I'd just be interested to see him write for the Eighth Doctor.
