Just Listened to The House By The Sea and … IT WAS AMAZING!!! Sorry, the new Dark Shadows fan inside of me just came out. Anyways, I had a couple of questions 1. Are there any audios that I should avoid as a new listener 2. Do you absolutely have to listen to Bloodlust before listening to 45-50 or can you listen to them first. Thanks House by the Sea is amazing isn't it? Colin really gets to shine in a role which isn't the Doctor - which just goes to further amplify how great an actor he is Avoid is a difficult one. Some are more continuity heavy than others which - if you're entirely new to the world of Dark Shadows - could be problematic. 45 - 50 is a good run (but I would say that) but I'd argue that Bloodlust is a good thing to listen to before them. Those stories push the stories on past Bloodlust and a couple of them push us towards Bloodline which is the next serial so I think Bloodlust is a good one to go with! I totally plan to get Bloodlust but just wanted to take advantage of the sale as much as possible, so I might just buy 45-50 in advance as the bundle plus a couple others. Which of the Dark Shadows Releases are your favourites. Thank you so much for the help!

Like Rob says there aren't any audios you should avoid, although some are a bit more continuity-heavy, come later in a story arc or are better appreciated with a more comprehensive understanding of the Dark Shadows universe. The Crimson Pearl, the 45th anniversary release definitely falls under that last heading as it's a series of vignettes spread from the founding of Collinsport to just after the TV show ended with the titular Pearl linking them. If you loved House by the Sea, then I recommend Beyond the Grave and The Harvest of Souls. Beyond the Grave is a recovered episode of a TV show that investigates hauntings, this one a Halloween special set in Collinsport. What could possibly go wrong? Harvest of Souls is like THbtS in that it's written by James Goss and features Colin Baker, but also picks up on the emotional fallout from Beyond the Grave on Maggie. If you've got a bit more to spend, go for the 1973 arc. It's where the current line producers came in and the stories have a subtle arc running through them. There's also the feel that there are a number of stories happening to different characters around the same time, like how a soap opera tends to have two or three storylines going at any one time. It's a good jumping on point that climaxes with Beyond the Grave and gives you a good feel for the characters as well as introducing one of the characters in Bloodlust. 2. Bloodlust is recommended first. Not only are there spoilers in 45-50 for it, but that spread of stories continues the story for a number of characters. Again, Rob beat me to it.

So I was considering adding the House of Despair to the Rage Beneath
Any opinion on those?

After this order I'll be 7 releases shy of the complete run. The Trask arc interests me more than the Angelique one and finally getting my hands on the first two full casts sets became the priority. Happy anniversary Dark Shadows!

So I was considering adding the House of Despair to the Rage Beneath Any opinion on those? That's a great run of stories. If you're getting those, get Kingdom of the Dead as well. Rage Beneath goes straight into Kingdom of the Dead (I know there was four years between when they were released) and David Warner is in the latter as the antagonist. Add The Legend Reborn to your basket as well, that's a great behind the scenes look at the first full cast season and has the isolated music tracks for those stories as well. Get it just for the music, it's phenomenal, Joseph Fox is one of my favorite Big Finish composers. Some of the music for that is on the early Dramatic Readings like Angelique's Descent, Clothes of Sand and The Ghost Watcher.

I'm a right nosy swine, so if anyone wants to add what made them choose the stories they bought, I'd be interested in reading it.

My wallet is despairing right now. I should be getting my tax refund soon. Probably should tell them just deposit that into Big Finish's bank account.

Well I ordered 1973 & Tony and Cassandra because I heard good things from all you lovely people (and I already owned one from each of these arcs respectively. I figured might as well get the rest). As for the other random ones I bought them because they sounded good & because of the actors in them: Nicola Bryant, Jonathan Frid, and Arthur Darvill, I also just bought the first 3 full cast ones starting with House of Despair. Decided to stop on the Christmas one. I think I am done though

2. Do you absolutely have to listen to Bloodlust before listening to 45-50 or can you listen to them first. Thanks I would take advantage of the sale to get them cheap but I'd hold onto them until I'd heard Bloodlust. One of them is quite a direct sequel and the others all allude to Bloodlust events (to varying degrees).

So does the 4th one not end on a cliffhanger? I didn't get it because honestly I didn't want to have to get the next one after that which is CD only. That's the only reason I didn't buy it. But if you say there is a type of conclusion I'll get that one too.

You should give the audios a try Mark. From what I understand the early eps of the TV series are harder for people to get into. I think it's the later eps when Barnabas joins that made the series famous (although as someone who likes old TV and movies I think I would enjoy the early eps) But as someone who only listens to the audio (for now) it's up to par with Big Finish's usual excellence.

I honestly don't get the "start with Barnabas" crew. It seems to me if you do that you would never have the affection for David, Liz, Roger et al as they become much more minor characters once Barnbas shows up. For me you get to know the Collins family best in those early episodes. The pace is meandering, yes, but that's the case throughout the show. Even the Adam arc has Julia, Barnabas, Nicolas and Angeique front and centre yet is every bit as meandering as "the silver pen" or "Burke's revenge" despite having those fan faves and plenty of horror elements. I was hooked from episode 1 and to this day have more affection for the early years than famed arcs like "1897" or "1795". Mark, how do you have zero interest yet go to the Collinsport Historical Society page for news? I think your quest for the scoop may be an addiction.

I only started watching the series last month and i use Hulu. They start with episode 210 so I missed the early episodes but not by choice.
