There really just isn't a way around recasting the role. The only other thing I can think of is doing some stories with Colonel Crichton's UNIT.

yes, but for passing mention like in the third doctor adventures it would work. Personally I'm in favour of recasting for any actor who is no longer with us. While I can understand people who feel strongly otherwise, they don't have to buy those products which include recast roles, just like I assume they refuse to watch the Five Doctors or series 2 of Blakes 7. It's more personal for Big Finish, then that. Nicholas Courtney was a dear friend to the Big Finish team. I sympathise with that point of view. it must be very difficult for them, whether they choose to narrate around the absence or to recast it must still bring a tear to the eye.

The objective part of me is completely on board with having the Third Doctor Adventures and I'm more than happy for there to be more off-world adventures with Jo and Mike, but from a more subjective standpoint, Earthbound just feels a little too soon.

I wonder if we'll see The Brigader will be out of action - perhaps Alistair steps out of line with White Hall during the course of a story - and we'll someone step in - someone who disrupts the UNIT family in a BIG way and is less tolerant and suspicious of The Doctor. It would be nice way to create a new period within the Third Doctor's era and still pay homage to The Brigader's legacy. I'm all for casting a respectful talented impersonator to play the Brigadier, but if Big Finish wants to wait a few years on that, they could do a lot worse than this idea here. It could give the Third Doctor a whole new "season" somewhere between The Time Monster and The Three Doctors. Big Finish is pretty good at creating whole arcs between consecutive episodes, after all - just look at all the MRs before Arc of Infinity or after Planet of Fire!
