So I've been giving this one another listen and I've been loving it, but I never hear anyone say anything about it. I mean it's Lance Parkin who wrote the excellent Davros and some books which I haven't read yet. It's basically a Hartnell historical on Traken which I love.

Steven Grief is great as the villain, the holeyer than thou approach of the consuls irritated, reasonable last Ep.
4/5

I remember listening to it, but it was not one of the stories that really stands out for me, I have to say. I'll probably listen again, some day, but was not one of my favorites at the time I listened to it.

I remember liking it a lot, even though I didn't understand some of it since I hadn't seen any Nyssa episodes yet. I haven't listened to it in a while. I probably should now that I know her a lot better.

I don't recall much talk about this one, either, but it's actually a favorite of mine. One of the better 5th Doctor releases, in my opinion, and one of those releases that further enhances a companion's backstory and depth (something Big Finish specializes in).

I kind of liked it, but for some reason it's one of the releases I remember least well.

it's only a few weeks since I listened to it, and I really enjoyed it, but it's fading already. I think the problem is that it's done quite by the numbers. it has a number of prequel boxes to tick, which it manages quite successfully and it tells a very competent story, as well as providing a lovely reason for why Nyssa seemed to lose her tendency to faint in the presence of evil between seasons, but in between everything it was trying to achieve, the story was quite pedestrian.

I love 'Primeveal'. One of my favourite stories from Big Finish 'Doctor Who' with the Fifth Doctor and Nyssa and a wonderful prequel to 'The Keeper of Traken'. I'm looking forward to posting my review on 'Primeveal' through 'The Nyssa Challenge' on my 'Bradley's Basement' blog soon. Tim.

If I ever had to trim my collection down to (say) 10 releases, Prineval would be one of them.

The Doctor and Nyssa return to Traken. Keeper is one of my favourite TV episodes and going back to Trakens history is interesting. Its always good to not only visit earth or Peladon but every other world the Doctor has been to.

It's... straightforwardly incredible. Ohh, how to describe Lance Parkin's stories for Who... You're sitting on a balcony, studying the horizon over a crowded table of objects. It's comfortable, nice in its own way, the clutter isn't really considerered as part of the view. Then comes another person looking out from the doorway. They step forward and rotate a few of the objects, maybe even shift the table ever so slightly closer to the railing and suddenly, the whole scene seems to self-align in a way that it never did before. Every knick-knack and bauble on the table has fallen in that perfect pattern where the foreground no longer feels intrusive to the background. Everything complements everything else.
I always come away from his stories really loving them and being quietly thunderstruck by whatever new addition he's come up with for this story. It feels odd to say, but Primeval reminds me a bit of The Web Planet or The Abominable Snowmen, a story about the Doctor coming face-to-face with a higher power that doesn't so much put him on his back foot as lure him in. It's a wonderful conceit. Long ago, the Trakenites cast out their god and now he's returned with an army to reclaim his centre of power. There's something very chilling about an adversary that not only can read thoughts, but is so alien to the fundamental laws of our universe that he can send the Doctor screaming into semi-catatonia.
Put on top of that a deconstruction of good vs. evil with the Consuls of Traken assuming the Doctor's multifaceted view to be a clear sign of evil and you have a really fantastic story. He's only done a handful of releases for Big Finish (among them what might be the definitive story of Davros and the sadly all-too-brief brief pairing of Eight/Benny), but Parkin's left a phenomenal impression. I always keep an eye out for his name on a story.

Brilliant audio drama, poor ole Nyssa goes through the mill & the plot has a energetic urgency to it, Lance Parkins rich script provides great character moments with a race against time adventure as well as a strong main villian.
Easily a 5/5.
Check out Tim Bradley's Nyssa reviews on Bradley's Basement there awesome.

I remember enjoying the idea of returning to Traken, and I love anything involving Stephen Grief. I recall the music being very good too, but apart from that, I'm afraid I remember this as dull and uneventful. Perhaps I should go back and have another listen.

I thought Primeval was pretty good, it's been a long time since I re-listened to it but I remember liking it. It's easy to overlook some of those early Main Range stories as they were so long ago, but there are some well told Doctor Who stories among them.

It took me YEARS to realise that the captain’s name isn’t Turntime, based on my mishearing the request he make of the computer to contact his daughter “Simi” using the contact details “simia term time”.
