And Martha was able to eventually make the right choice. When all was said and done, she decided to strike out on her own rather than play second fiddle to a woman she'd never met. I definitely agree that Donna was the companion that the Tenth Doctor needed, someone who respected him but didn't kowtow to him. She knew how to strike a chord with him through her humanity. After seeing Runaway Bride I thought Donna would be the ideal "after-Rose" companion, so for me the year with Martha was a bit of misstep. Not that I dislike the character or the season as whole, but at times it felt like Martha was there to be emotionally abused. It's a shame Catherine Tate didn't get two series as Donna Noble. One series wasn't enough.

If we're going with a top 5, then I'll say Jamie, Jack, the Brigadier, River, Ace. I don't think any of them really need an explanation.

Fitzgerald Michael Kriener. The prototypical New Series companion - sans the connection to a home life - someone whose story is as important as the Doctor's, who grows to become the Doctor's equal and, importantly, someone who enjoys travelling in space and time, but who isn't a bully or a psychopath (ie Clara and River respectively).

Wait bully? Even if I disagree with them, I understand the arguments for Clara being too perfect or too important, but how is she a bully?

Constant name calling, hitting him when she doesn't get her way/he says or does something that annoys her, mockery, forcing him to behave in certsin ways in order to fit her own view of how he should behave.... if I saw half of that in the playground I'd be setting up behavioural interventions.

By him do you mean the Doctor? Because the Doctor calls everybody names, I only remember her hitting him once (and he kind of deserved it), I don't think she really mocks him all that much, and the only time ahe really forced him to behave a certain way was when she was pretty much crazy with grief.

My top 5 best companions are:
5) C'rizz, he's basically Turlough but done well; more interesting and better story. He is a potential murderer tortured by his own mind but with genuine good heart, it would have been great to see him with Lucie Miller instead with the worn Charley Pollard.
4) Martha Jones, the perfect companion for the wrong Doctor in its most depressing moment , she would have worked better with the Ninth and/or Eleventh Doctors.
3) John Benton, very kind and friendly to be a soldier, and that makes him so unique and special. I like to think that her sister, mentioned in "The Android Invasion" is the mother of Rory Williams.
2) Cinder a "War Companion" for a War Doctor, I would have liked to read / hear more stories of those two. Look at any picture of this equipment can be found in Google, and listen to the song "Alice In Chains - Rooster" to see it.
1) 1) Rory Pond-Williams, for me, he is the true main companion of the Eleventh Doctor, not Amy Williams-Pond. A open minded man but always questioning what is right or not, very careful but with an adventurous spirit, from a shy nurse to a brave centurion. He came just when I was losing hope for male companion after fiascos like Adam, Mickey, even Jack Harkness shaking with fear by telling Tennant that he is working on Torchwood. Amy Pond is basically the anti RTD companion like "Married ... with Children" is the anti-sitcom, is selfish, bully, immature, flirtatious, a bit mentally damaged, stubborn Scottish, a little idiot and so I consider her a nice breath of fresh air, I'm glad that she never gave a speech like his predecessors on "why the Doctor is so wonderful" and the Doctor never need her as if she were was an emotional crutch as like was Rose.

Liz Shaw and Romana: highly competent, won't take any nonsense, and from a writing perspective they generally weren't made to ignore the Doctor on a reasonable point and do something foolish merely to advance the plot. It's an inescapable trope, but it gets to me sometimes.
Leela: pleasantly savage. I always crack up at those scenes in Horror of Fang Rock where the woman keeps screaming and everyone rolls their eyes....eventually Leela just walks over and whacks her across the face, saying "oh.....SHUT UP!"
Donna Noble and Lucie Miller: similar spunkiness/humor, etc., but without that kind of denigrating approach to the Doctor we see with companions like Clara.
K9: Leeson is awesome and the character is always used to great comedic effect.
BF: Evelyn Smythe and Hex, for rather different reasons. BF Ace is pretty good too.
I'd also add that BF has improved every single companion they've used from the original series.

Interesting choices. Glad to see I'm not the only one who likes C'rizz, I see so much negativity about him. I love Martha and very much enjoyed Rory, too. Donna is still my favorite, though.
