About the villain Tobias Vaughn is one of my absolute favorite Who villains. I do think Philip Voss was clever casting, especially like that he was in Classic Who himself (and the 1st Doctor era to boot) but I won't lie no one can replace Kevin Stoney for me. If I could go back in time and meet one guest Who actor it would definitely be Kevin Stoney. Of course I don't even think the character in this was supposed to sound like the original Tobias Vaugn because of all the changes he went through but it did make me wish Kevin Stoney could have been in some Big Finish stories. Just imagine that voice. Although don't get me wrong Philip Voss has a lovely voice himself. As for Chris and Roz, Chris still doesn't make much of an impression on me compared to Roz who just comes off as the richer of the two characters. I wouldn't mind if they both joined the 7th Doctor on some original Big Finish adventures though. I do love Ace one of my favorite Who companions but it would be nice to mix things up a bit and I expect Big Finish can develop these two characters even further. Though I wonder if they would have the rights to use them outside the novel adaptions.

I enjoyed this a lot, however I have some questions since I didn't read the book. {Spoiler}Was I supposed to recognize the robot antagonist? Was he someone from the TV series? Or someone from the novels? I kept trying to place him but couldn't. (If it's someone I should easily know I'll feel silly.) I am starting to really love the Roz and Chris pairing. Another vote here for a MR story with them. {Spoiler}Tobias Vaughn - Head of International Electromatics in the Troughton TV Serial The Invasion ... a particularly nasty human Cheers Tony Oh!!! That makes so much more sense now! Especially all of the talk about the Cybermen. I don't know why I didn't catch it.

I have read the book and did know, but was still scratching my head as I couldn't remember them ever naming him in the audio and thought I must have tuned out for a moment as they did the big reveal. Wonder why they never named him. Clumsy editing, assuming listener knowledge, or avoiding questions over rights.

If Virgin were allowed to name the character in the book, and by the rights to the book transferring to Andy Lane who approved the audio adaptation, what issue could there be? The only thing missing to the character is the name, and there wasn't much controversy around how the character was portrayed in the book that I'm aware of. Baffling.

Wonder why they never named him. Clumsy editing, assuming listener knowledge, or avoiding questions over rights. If you look closely at the audio cover, Roz is carrying a Cybergun from Silver Nemesis. I thought that was rather clever. That said, I think we may have had another Professor Stream moment because I don't remember the reveal either. In the novel it comes right after the Doctor has verified his own pet theory about Interstellar Nanoatomic. Does the character belong to Derrick Sherwin? Talking of Vaughn, whoever played him (Peter Voss?) should be given a medal. It was just like having Kevin Stoney risen from the grave with that wistful, yet sinister timbre. A gleefully apposite portrayal. The only thing missing to the character is the name, and there wasn't much controversy around how the character was portrayed in the book that I'm aware of. Baffling. It was definitely a welcome return, he felt a little too easily dispatched in The Invasion and Original Sin used its misanthropic Earth Empire setting well. It was cool also to learn that he was responsible for the various mechanical follies The Green Death, Robot and other stories that the Doctor wound up in.

Loved this adaptation, a strong release & after forgetting who the villain was in the novel the reveal was surprisingly uplifting.
I'd rate it a solid entertaining 8/10

Pretty excellent, I must say. Although I think Damaged Goods comes out on top. Still have to listen to Cold Fusion though to round out the Chris-Roz audio trilogy. Then it's onto the 14 unread books on my shelf, spanning from Sky Pirates! onwards.
I too thought it was weird that they never named the antagonist - but really, in-universe, it makes a lot of sense - why would the Doctor have to say his name when there was no-one else in the room?

I'm hardly the first to observe it, but Doctor Who isn't really science fiction, but more of fantasy with the trappings of science fiction.
This is Doctor Who as science fiction, and it's brilliant.

Replacement CD Back Cover/Blurb being sent out/ received,
(Too be honest I can't see anything wrong with the 1st one.)
(According to BF there's an "I" missing from Original on the spine of the 1st one that several proof reads missed.) Regards

Perhaps when everything is lumped together. I'd say the original series, particularly towards its beginnings, hewed much closer to science fiction. The new series seems to have become more and more fantasy oriented.

Just finished listening to the story today. I was also puzzled why the antagonist was never identified in the story. The way it played out it seemed that the book was a sequel to a previous book. As mentioned in previous messages that makes sense. Looking up the wiki page on Vaughn I see what the Doctor actually did with him at the end of the book. Anyway, besides the confusion there, it was another great story.

Listened to it last night. Love the way they inserted news casts, instead of having King like buildups for quick dying characters. A great adaptation on a hard book to adapt

That was very good. Strong space opera setting (liked the cutaways to Empire Today) and decent introductions for Chris and Roz. The discussion on the philosophy of murder was a brilliant, and bleak, character moment for the Doctor too.
As for the villain. Tbh I think he's the weakest element, after all this well-crafted original setting and conspiracy plot we get a villain from deep in continuity which seems a shame. Wonder why they didn't name him at all.

I also liked this very much, great setting and good story. Well done, one of my favorite novel adaptations.
The villain... I was lucky I just before did watch the relevant classic episode so I actually knew what his backstory was...

I finally got around to listening to this fairly recently. I thought it was quite good and a pretty faithful adaptation of the book. And having just read the book recently, I have to admit that I didn't even notice that Vaughn's name wasn't specifically mentioned in the audio version.

They do this amazing job of making it obvious that it's Tobias Vaughn without ever actually naming him.
