For me it would be the Charles Paris Mysteries starring Bill Nighy. Aging, alcoholic actor Charles Paris is perpetually in trouble with his ex-wife Francis and always frustrating his agent Maurice but he always seems to work just enough to put him on scene for when a crime hapens. The mysteries have very much found their vibe, which means, plot-wise, they are all almost exactly the same, but don't let that stop you. Nighy is a gift from the audio Gods playing a role unsually suited to his style od delivery and every episode has a good laugh or three. I just would not listen to these mysteries back to back. Savor them. Anyway, any suggestions from others?

I love the Charles Paris stories, but the McLevy series with Brian Cox and Siobhan Redmond is my favourite radio crime drama. The old Peter Coke Paul Temple stories (and recent Conrad Logan remakes) are very enjoyable too.

I like the McLevy mysteries as well but speaking as a actor/director/writer, Charles Paris hits me in all my sweet spots. And well, Bill Nighy. And while not strictly mysteries, okay, more fantasy, I really love Pilgrim.

I'm not sure I necessarily approve of the changes they made to the Charles Paris series, but the results are very good (and I love the way they use Charles's mobile phone!)

I've not read any of the books. I am always looking around for a new mystery series. How drastic are the changes? I really enjoy the audios and don't want to spoil that.

I enjoyed the sadly few Brother Cadfael adaptations, with Philip Madoc in the title role for the three I've heard. The historical setting is not one I'm at all familiar with, and provides an extra level of difficulty in the resolution of matters being investigated.

I much preferred the three new Miss Marple short stories with June Whitfiled I heard over Christmas rather than the three part And Then There Were None I watched on TV.
But then I remember buying the BBC audio of And Then There Were None a few years back and not liking that version either.

I always wondered why after adapting the twelve Miss Marple novels in the 90's with June Whitfield, the BBC never continued and recorded the short stories with June Whitfield too. So the three new Marple radio adaptations were long overdue in my eyes, and very welcome.
I did think the TV version of And Then There Were None over Christmas was way better than the BBC Radio 4 version from 2010 though.

ok there are loads ....
lord peter wimsey (Nine tailors is just the best radio drama ever) Sherlock Holmes (merrison & Williams) Agatha raisin (why they only did 3 series is a crime itself) Charles paris (get better with each series and I think they are better than the books!) Doctor Gideon Fell Mysteries devices & desires by P D James Mc Levy Out Of The Blue by Robert Goddard V I Warshawski - all the series were brilliant (even with the lead change) and I must say a lot better than the books.
honerable mentions to, A small town murder & DCI Stone but they are more Police Drama than classic Murder Mystery tales
Edit: and how could I forget Poirot & Marple

Heard some of the more recent McLevy episodes. Little disappointed with its scoundscape. It doesn't sound like Scottish Victoriana to me.
They recently replayed Le Carre's Smiley stories - they had me hooked.

The most recently released Charles Paris mystery, The Cinderella Killer is one of the best & funniest. Set during the holidays where Charles is working in a panto, it has everything we have come to expect from the Charles Paris range of audios.

I actually thought that The Cinderella Killer was a weak Charles Paris story to be honest, parts of it were enjoyable and funny of course, but I didn't find it as interesting as the previous Charles Paris BBC radio adaptations.
