It's so big, that the postman couldn't deliver it! I have to go pick it up tomorrow from the Post Office. (Soooo.... anybody willing to say what the 'free downloads' are?) part one of war doc & part one of doom, with a code to buy complete box at a discount. Thanks Um.... because I was out? (Blimey, dalekbuster523, what time of day do they deliver your letters? The days of the Royal Mail bringing everything in time for breakfast are long gone)

Okay, I had to go to the Gallifrey Base to find out what the winning cover is: When clicking "CLICK HERE TO REVEAL THE WINNER" on the DWM website, it doesn't actually do as it's supposed to on my *time to get a new one* computer. Hmm, where does a large portion of my disposable income go...?

WH Smith couldn't even fit the issue on the shelves - at first I thought they'd sold out and I'd have to find a newsagent or similar, but actually it was to the side in its own display - almost missed it!
The souvenir supplement magazine acts as a reminder of how amazing some of the covers were - but also a reminder of how most of them don't stand out, or have become horribly dated through the decades. But some interesting anecdotes within.
I'm glad the Mark Gatiss/Gareth Roberts/Clayton Hickman proposal never got off the ground - there's some elements I like. Derek Jacobi as the Doctor (not in Unbound) would have been fantastic casting, and the setting of an English village brings to mind Scream of the Shalka. The idea of the Doctor having spent some downtime on Earth brings to mind the EDAs - such as The Burning - and it's a nice way to remove the baggage. At the same time, it feels a little too circular to An Unearthly Child (one of my criticisms of The Force Awakens vs. A New Hope). The half hour format feels incredibly retrograde, reducing the programme down to a soap opera - although I could have dug the 90 minute adventure format, although I'm sure 2001 production values would not have held it up as well as the cinematic quality to Sherlock a decade later. I just can't imagine an older actor people have nostalgic memories of from the 70s would have struck the same chord as with a younger Doctor - because they're essentially preaching to the older viewers and the converted. The companions I can go with (great to see a male and female companion), but I feel RTD had a much better idea bringing it into an urban, city environment. The only story idea I could really go with was the one about archiving and recreating our present in the future - an idea I've also had a thought of in regards to stories, with so much data kept online (including highly personal data), and the masses of videos and images created, making it difficult to sift between the 'good' and the 'bad'.
I can't rate Bernard Lodge's logos too highly though - the latter logo has a nice, minimalist feel to it without the lines - perhaps too minimalist - yet with the lines, it feels remarkably 80s, rather than something we'd have seen in the early 2000s.

Why are we speaking as though Mark Gattis's pitch will never happen? He could still become showrunner one day and implement his ideas into his era.

Nice to see my friend Alister Pearson getting a mention, he's created many excellent illustrations for Doctor Who over the years.
Just don't call him "Ali".

After reading Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts and Clayton Hickman's 2001 pitch, as much as I like Mark Gattis I have to agree that it's good it never happened. I don't like the idea of the first Doctor of a Doctor Who revival being 'frightening' or that he would only know certain elements of Earth history but won't recall others such as the Titanic. To me, the latter is not who the Doctor is and it would make him appear too human in his intelligence rather than being the very clever alien from an advanced race he is.
Also: having the Doctor not remember who the Daleks are would have been terrible and hugely disrespectful towards the likes of Terry Nation and Ben Aaronovitch (who have helped write the Doctor's many battles with them). It's like an excuse to ignore a massive part of the show's history and pretend the Doctor's past encounters with the Daleks are nothing.

Whilst I agree going in guns blazing would never have been the best approach with the show's revival, I think certain elements need to be there like an established history between the Doctor and the Daleks and the Doctor having a vast knowledge.

It's very much "oh, the Eighth Doctor has amnesia again". Come to think of it, it's a long time since he last lost his memory! Our local big Tescos has the current issue of DWM displayed in the pride-of-place prestige magazine slot on every till. (I dunno... I'm not sure there's necessarily much in the current issue for a casual purchaser)

I feel my (now infamous) urge for quotes coming on me "Good Evening" "Hey sweetie" "Oh, I can shed some light on that" "Look at me" "YAAAAHH!" "Calm your thoughts"

Is there a deadline attached to the download codes? The local shops are always an issue or to behind, so no telling when I'll get my copy.

I know there was one time the deadline was extended because Nick was made aware that many stores, especially those around the world, got the issues later than when they first hit the stands in the UK.
