Probably not the right thread for this, but I'd argue it counts as obscure lol Would anyone in the know care to sate my morbid curiosity and tell me who this E.S. person is that started all this drama on twitter about BF being a closed pool of writers? Thanks

Thanks I’m taking a wild guess that E.S is for Elizabeth Sandifer? Yes, managed to find it last night. Can't say I know who she is, but the name rings a bell and there's negativity associated to it in my mind. Don't know what she did before this, but that's never a good sign hahaha. Anyways, even though I feel like I should agree with the core basis of her rant, the unnecessary hostility has really put me off her argument.

I’m taking a wild guess that E.S is for Elizabeth Sandifer? Yes, managed to find it last night. Can't say I know who she is, but the name rings a bell and there's negativity associated to it in my mind. Of the TARDIS Eriditorium website. Wrote long impenetrable essays explaining why every element of DW is offensive and wrong and awful. I mean, I know hating every element of DW is the priviledge of the true fan, but one wonders why Sandifer actually bothered watching it.
Also - BF a closed shop? Seriously? Compared to what it was like before Nick Briggs took over, it's practically a new name every week. I grant that there are some patches (Torchwood has been complained about recently) which lack quite so much turnover, but I've always got the impression that BF have had specific areas for tryouts - Short Trips, the Main Range, perhaps Dark Shadows - that aren't available at present.
The novels could do wiht some more fresh blood, though, but with so few of them I suspect the line might be hanging on by its fingernails and they want known quantities to ensure sales.

As much of an arse as she is, maybe not so great to be deadnaming her?

Apologies, no offence was meant. I simply thought that her earlier identity was better known; I wasn't aware that citing a former identity as a former identity was considered on a par with referring to somebody currently as, or addressing them as, such. I'll go back and amend the post.

I know she said that isn’t the case. But I do almost get the sense that maybe she submitted a few scripts to Big Finish and they got rejected and this is the straw that broke the camel’s back. Just seems a bit odd for this to come out of nowhere.

The whole argument is a bit redundant since BF have been taking on new writers (most notably for the recent Benny sets), the Paul Spragg ST competitions, and not to mention taking on 3 new producers who are part of the newer generation of Who fans. So she either hasn’t bothered to do any research to back up her point or she’s deliberately ignoring those facts just to have a moan anyway.

So she either hasn’t bothered to do any research to back up her point or she’s deliberately ignoring those facts just to have a moan anyway. Even just looking at this month's DW releases (and only looking at writers, as that's what Sandifer seems to be complaining about): - Doctor Who: Timejacked! - Episode one written by Matt Fitton, whose first work for BF was in 2011, but the other two episodes are written by Lou Morgan, whose first work for BF was only in 2019. The set was script-edited by Fitton and Alfie Shaw, who first worked for BF only in 2018. So overall pretty new talent for this set.
- Doctor Who: Lost Warriors - Episode one written by James Kettle, whose first BF work was only 2020, episode two by Lizzie Hopley, who had contributed to some of the printed Short Trips, and worked for BF for a while as an actor, but whose first audio script was in 2011, followed by working more regularly from 2016. Third episode by John Dorney, who has been working for BF as a writer since 2010. Script-edited by Fitton. Again, not the "same core of writers dominat[ing]" BF as Sandifer claims.
- Jenny - The Doctor's Daughter: Still Running - Episode one written by Adrian Poynton, whose first work for BF was 2017, and this is only his third script for them. Episode two co-written by Christian Brassington and Fitton. This is only Brassington's second BF script, his first work was in 2018. Episode three by Dorney, and episode four by Lisa McMullin, who first wrote for BF in 2018. Script-edited by Fitton.
- UNIT - Nemesis: Between Two Worlds - Episodes one and four by Andrew Smith, whose first BF script was 2010. Episode two by Dorney, and three by McMullin, with Dorney and Smith script-editing. Probably the most 'writersʼ club' of the four sets this month.
Overall, though, I don't think this is anywhere near as bad as Sandifer is making out, and I think it's especially bad that she's calling out Briggs, claiming that he's in control of which writers are hired. It isn't up to Briggs at all, it's up to the producers and script-editors of each individual release.
