Really enjoyed these, they felt like full cast audio's to me, the Doctor really felt like he was taking a full part in these stories, Companion Chronicles have come a long way since they first started.

I haven't had much experience with the Companion Chronicles beyond the First Doctor: Volume 1 (which I found a bit disappointing due to the Oliver arc spoilers, as I haven't heard those yet) but I have to say that I really enjoyed this box set, though I entered the first couple of stories with trepidation after my experiences with the First Doctor set.
Also, my CD arrived today, and I think mine may be a misprint.
The front cover it arrived with is not the standard cover but instead the retro cover with the 'Also Available' promotion on the inside cover. The back cover has the blurbs, etc. with the standard cover opposite. This means that I can't have the standard cover for the front and the proper backing for the back :/
Does anyone else have this issue with their copy?

I really should listen to some more 2nd Doctor stories at some point, Lords Of The Red Planet and The Rosemariners were amongst the most enjoyable BF stories I've heard, Frazer Hines voice has barely aged a day i.m.o, and his 2nd Doctor impersonation was excellent, on several occasions he sounded exactly the same as Troughton it really did feel like listening to a lost soundtrack from the 60's...

Yes I do and several other people on social media as well. It doesn't bother me as its how I prefer to display my Covers. You can E-mail enquiries@bigfinish.com and ask for a replacement Cover if you wish though.

I just thought that it was how BF was doing the CC's now. I've always displayed them with the "modern" covers just to keep all the CC's consistent, but it doesn't bother me overly much. As for the set itself, I was really hoping that the advent of the Early Adventures would stop the trend that the CC's were going down towards the end of their monthly run of trying to basically make a pseudo full cast story with generic narration. Yet, this box set basically has four stories that are basically told as Early Adventures. While the narrators use the word "I" there's no context for when or why they're narrating except partially with The Story of Extinction. Even in that one there's no explanation for how Jamie is jumping in. The Integral actually has Zoe narrating events that she never saw. While I don't think that every CC has to have a framing piece, the ones that do best when diverging from that format are the ones that did something truly experimental such as The Jigsaw War, rather than basically just trying to tell a regular story with smaller cast than normal and generic narration. I want to know when the characters are narrating and why to get perspective on the story that they're telling. All that being said, while I'm somewhat disappointed with the format of this box, I did think that The Story of Extinction was the best. It had a good concept and felt the most like a Companion Chronicle, although the Jamie narration seemed intrusive and unnecessary. Just because the set is about Jamie's development it doesn't mean he needs to narrate every one. Seeing him through the eyes of his fellow companions with only one CC for himself would have been fine. I'll do a more thorough review later after I relisten.

The Nameless Dead struck me as being very Sapphire and Steel.

The Selchian Gambit is a fun, frothy monster base under siege story. There's a rather dark but compelling arc with Zoe in the CCs where a Company wants what is in her head, but she isn't playing ball. Echoes of Grey, The Memory Cheats, The Uncertainty Principle and Second Chances.

“The TARDIS arrives in 1920s England, the Doctor, Jamie, Ben and Polly finding themselves in a wintry dusk beside a railway line. The station nearby appears deserted, but there are figures watching from the shadows, all of them waiting for a dead man’s train...”
One of my favourite stories in the Volume. I guess it touches my heart in some ways and always gets a listen every now and then But very appropriate as we enter November with its “Unknown Soldier” theme. The vibe is very much Dickens-The signalman and its a great historical story and very much suits Ben Polly and Jamie with the second Doctor.Think almost assignment two of the sapphire and Steel Tv adventures. But very much a MUST listen for the cast and also for the script and the Historical apisode it utilises.great Script Mr Pritchard

John Pritchard always has a very unique approach to his Doctor Who scripts which is much appreciated. He treats Time like something out of Sapphire and Steel. Very alien and very much an antagonist.

“Civilisations rise and fall – and few planets have seen this happen more often than Amyrndaa. The Doctor, Jamie and Victoria join a survey team to find out why on the planet where everything is suited to creating life, nothing lives for long...”
Another in the volume of Companion Chronicles also deserving to have its own thread. This time its Jamie (each tale has Jamie as the connecting character) and with Victoria (ok played by an Older Deborah Watling) It is actually a very deep thought out story and a very distinctive foe without giving away too much for those who haven’t listened. There are tender moments between Jamie and Victoria as she teaches him to read that add to their relationship aboard the Tardis and again it is well worth listening in what is an excellent box set.

“When tempers fray in the TARDIS, the Doctor struggles to help Jamie and Zoe resolve their differences. Arriving at Aspen Base proves a welcome distraction, but the isolated facility is under siege. Can Jamie’s belief in right and wrong withstand the perspective changing power of the Integral?”
Again we are continuing with episodes focusing on Jamie but this time with Jamie adding further layers to this Highlanders mind set.The almost cold logical Zoe and the passionate Jamie.David Bartlett who gives us the excellent Across the Darkened City in The First Doctor Volume 2 also delivers and excellent script there is something about the writers in all these stories which draws me to them perhaps they aren’t as well worn as so many others and it does give a freshness to the proceedings. Its a story about each characters personal emotions and view points 18th century versus 23rd century.I guess if i was to find fault its the switching between first and third person but again another good story and its a reason i love these early sets as i start one story and follow throw to the end.let us hope Dave continues to provide further submissions to the range. I must admit the full casts that were done are among my favourites and my heart does sink that we do not have individual covers for each of the tales 😂

“The Edge is the galaxy’s scientific hub of experimentation, theoretical breakthroughs and invention – just the sort of place to interest the Doctor and Zoe. However, a secret lies hidden in The Edge laboratories. Jamie instinctively knows that something is wrong, and it doesn’t take long for him to be proved right...”
So we end up with the final story in the box set and because am listening on download and not changing CDs there is a noticeable shift in each of the stories in that you start off with a full cast drama and then Jamie Victoria and the Doctor and then Zoe Jamie and the Doctor and then finally more intimately it becomes just Jamie (Frazer) himself voicing the Tardis crew with Curtis/Sebastian Its nice to have this focus of the set basically on Jamies character.Strangely enough i think this story really could have been expanded upon the plot is pretty much a straightforward one,i just felt i needed more time knowing this world,i felt this also with the previous tale the Integral. But again its great to again have good authors and time spent with my favourite companion characters and Jamie is among the top ones...even if he is no really a real Scot 😂
the other benefit in this range and on listening on my IPad is the luxury of also reading the scripts am beginning to do this more and more

Always thought the Integral would be good for a repeat appearance. I do like the idea of these seemingly benevolent aliens being rather like mercenaries. They’re quite willing to do good. But for a price. And their rates are non negotiable.

I did enjoy the different authors and found that ideas definitely could be expanded upon am interested where the Volume 3 will go and when/if it will be released but hopefully they continue with the same authors
