A few nights ago I watched Spiderman: Homecoming. Enjoyed it. The clips in the credits were interesting, too.

Tonight's horror was 30 Days of Night. Bit of a shame, this one. I liked the way it was filmed, the directing, the use of colours, the way the vampires looked. But it kinda fell on its face in a number of ways....I think it would've been far more interesting and creepy if there had been no subtitles at all for the vampires talking in their own language, for one. For another, the movie had a bunch of structural plot problems that really brought it down for me. Like, if at the beginning there had been just one person killed and that became a serious worry as the town shut down, and then we moved into the shutdown, the movie would have had a defined beginning-middle-end. But they didn't do that, it just started in on the killing them and suddenly the town was shut down, and so the movie had no flow. A while into the movie I realized that I just had no sense of where I was or where it was headed, it just felt aimless. It's a shame because it feels like there's a better movie buried in there somewhere, but it unfortunately just never manages to bubble to the surface. A few nights ago I watched Spiderman: Homecoming. Enjoyed it. The clips in the credits were interesting, too. Love that one. Tom Holland is so good in the role, and his buddy Ned cracks me up.

The Incredibles (2004)
One of Pixar’s finest films.

Before work yesterday I watched the original 'Carnival Of Souls', which I adored. As for today: Enola Holmes - You know what? I think I enjoyed that more than I thought I would. Little Shop Of Horrors - Well, as it's the 23rd day of the month of September... My 350th film of lockdown/the past (almost) six-months. Jesus. (Yes, I did watch the director's "cut" with the original ending, because happiness does not belong in 2020 ) Girl Flu - Like 'Enola', I think I enjoyed this more than I thought I would (weirdly sweet in places, weirdly sweet).

Three today...
Started off with The African Queen this morning. Considering I love old movies, and this is a '51 movie with Bogie and Katharine Hepburn, I was actually pretty surprised at how little I enjoyed it. A plot that meandered its way to nowhere, unbelievable characters, just the most absurdly childish dialogue. Very, very surprised.
Then this evening a friend and I (re)watched together (remotely) Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze, following on (re)watching the first one a few weeks ago. Oof. Friends, this movie does not hold up. At all.
I need a palette cleanser after that, so tonight's spooky movie is Nosferatu. The 1922 silent. Been a dog's age since I watched this one too, but fortunately it still holds up. The endless organ music is a little grating, but it's still good.

Thor: Ragnorak. That was pretty interesting. You never know who will turn up. Or what Loki will do.

More Jackie Chan kung fu antics in Mels On Wheels, enjoying the fun entertaining aspect Chan movies deliver during these very depressing times.

Coraline (2009)
An impressive stop motion fare although I don’t think it’s as terrifying as people make it out to be. Even at the time I didn’t think it was at all scary.
Then again I don’t suffer from Koumpounophobia nor have I read the original Neil Gaiman novel so maybe I’m just missing something.

I Love You, Daddy - Wherein Louis CK mansplains feminism... Whilst there are certainly some, ahem, 'issues' with this film, by the end it was ok, it was... Ok?
Bad Taste - Cheesy, as films go, but certainly a lot of fun! I wonder whatever happened to that Peter Jackson guy?... Afterwards I watched the BBC2 documentary on it.
An American Pickle - I've got about half-an-hour left and whilst it's definetly not going to be a favourite film of mine of the year, I'm enjoying it fine enough, I guess? (The ending was sweet though)

"Nine hours ten for the 'Godfather' trilogy? Way too long... Eight-and-three-quarter hours for the 'Hunger Games' films, you say? Eh, go on them..." I'm sure there's some logic in there somewhere. (In unrelated news, I've just started 'Mockingjay' part 1).

Enola Holmes. Not very good, but then again I am not the target audience.

Enola Holmes I liked the majority of this movie a lot with some major flaws. I love Millie Bobbie Brown as a performer and it was a novelty hearing her use her natural accent in a role! She was very believable as a young aspiring and spirited detective and I liked her Fleabag-esque fourth wall breaking. She was almost Doctory in both delivery and the fact that she even had her own companion ( who I thought she had terrific chemistry with)! I also loved Helena Bonaham Carter as her mother.
The aspects I wasn’t sure about was Sherlock, he was just too human and not very Sherlockian. I thought he was very cute and charming but he was far more Mr. Darcy than Sherlock. This is going to sound terrible but my mom ( who watched the movie with me) said (half jokingly) the reason I didn’t buy him as Sherlock is I am “beautiest” in that I am turned off by really unambiguously attractive people and I have to say there is some truth in that. I do tend to gravitate towards actors/performers who can be very attractive in their own unique way but are a bit odd looking or quirky and are more attractive for their personality and really overly perfect looking people are ( with a few acceptions) really off putting to me. For example I much prefer lanky guys over big buff men usually. I guess I also have trouble trusting really unambiguously attractive people. People who are too perfect looking really have to work hard to win me over with their personality. I don’t know why this is with me and I feel bad for this way of thinking, anyone else have this problem? I also have issues with the way his Sherlock was written and acted. Besides his looks, I am much more used to the Benedict Cumberbatch approach to Sherlock, the much more alien mannerisms and delivery and this Sherlock just seemed like a displaced lead in a historical romance. I also thought it was odd that Watson wasn’t even mentioned! I will say I really liked the brother/sister dynamic Sherlock had Enola and I hope if there is a sequel it gets developed further. Also I thought Mycroft’s portrayal was a bit too cartoony kids movie antagonist and not enough of the drawl man behind the man character I am used to. I enjoyed a lot of this movie with just a few sticking points, and I hope there is at least a sequel!

In the last couple days...
Night of the Living Dead - The classic, the origin of it all. Still great, though it's starting to show its age a bit.
Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home - For the umpteenth time. Still brilliant.
Enola Holmes - Wasn't sure what to expect, watched it because MBB is really good in Stranger Things and I genuinely believe this girl is gonna be a super star at some point. I really enjoyed it. I thought it was well directed, the framing of the shots and the use of colour were excellent, the breaking the fourth wall story device was well-used and funny, and the cast (which was a dynamite group of talent) was uniformly excellent.
