Fast & Furious 9. Nonsense. Will this franchise ever end? It makes no sense on multiple levels, however "bright shiny things"... so it will make 1Billion dollars no doubt. I got lost about 1/2 way through over a couple scenes I didn't know what was going on/how they got to where they were..

Another Round - A Danish tragicomedy lead by the superb Mads Mikkelsen. It all feels very real and it's so much more than a film about the consumption of alcohol; it's the group reaching a midlife crisis and how one minor change to life can create a great impact - big or small. Indeed, it's both an intoxicating yet sobering watch! One thing that did confuse me a little: They clearly are having better and more enjoyable lives when their Blood Alcohol Count is 0.05%. Martin reconnects with his wife and children, which is pretty much exactly what he wanted to do. They then up their BAC to 0.1% and then go to binge drinking. Martin's family react negatively to that - quite understandably - and then say he's been clearly drunk for weeks and weeks. Collectively the group decide to abandon their experiment.
I didn't really get that, to be honest. I don't think they were visibly drunk during the 0.05% experiment and they were leading better lives. As a viewer it would have made more sense for them to have gone back down to that 0.05% BAC, not quit altogether. It feels like there's a slight disconnect between what the story is trying to say and what we see. I think it would've benefitted from more detail about how long the 0.1% has gone on and how they feel they need to just pack it in.

In The Heights. It was ok. I was expecting better.
Even so, I think Lin Manuel Miranda is the most important addition to the world of musical theater since Stephen Sondheim and I will watch whatever he creates.

Movie day!
Hunt for the Wilderpeople - First time seeing this one, loved it.
Blade - First time watching this in 15-20 years. I remembered loving it. It...has not aged well.
Humanity and Paper Balloons - Another first time watch. Very well made--you'd never know that it was a movie from the 30s, rather than during the heyday of similar films two or three decades later--but I found it hard to connect with any of the characters, which made it a challenge to pay attention and keep up with the plot.

Hunt for the Wilderpeople! OMG, I love it. I have lived in NZ and seeing all these famous places, hunting the Huia (having spend 10 years in the bush "hunting" for rare birds myself) and of course the characters! Even the news people are the real original TVNZ news people. And the grumpy old man... 1:1 copy of my old sheep farming landlord. It is perfect.

Star Trek: First Contact. Lots of fun, my favourite of the TNG movies. Saw it was on Film 4 but missed the start, so I said I wouldn't bother if I was jumping in half an hour into it. 5 minutes later I was loading the DVD into my PC to watch... I am weak.

After a discussion on one of the threads here, I booted up a few clips online of First Contact... The holodeck, the deflector, the Jeffreys tubes, Cochrane's rocket--I bit the bullet and just watched the whole thing. It's the most vividly cinematic of the TNG stories, I feel. A great film. I appreciate how much effort was put into giving the Enterprise that same feeling of solidity you get from real naval cruisers. The weight of the bulkheads. The encounter on the ground, too, has that wonderful sense of history being made under your feet. Life as we've never encountered before.

I don't really care. I like Star Trek when it embraces that naval feel. My favourite episode of TOS is Balance of Terror, which is a WW2 submarine movie moved to space. TWOK is similar in the battle between the starships in the nebula. I think adding that solid naval feel really grounds it and allows the story to go off and do its thing because there's a sense of realism given to the whole thing by that recognisable naval atmosphere.
First Contact is a really good, enjoyable movie. It's a good war movie, the Ahab stuff is well done, the idea that it's a historical story - still set in our future... and it's got the zing of a really enjoyable sc-fi movie. And really funny at times. Love it.

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

First Contact is the best TNG film and I’d rate it higher than several of the Classic films as well. It’s fantastic: Frakes is as good as Meyer and the equal of Nimoy in the direction of it. It’s great Trek and a pretty damn good film. You could easily use it as an intro to Trek for a non-fan.
