The Snow Queen’s Revenge (1996)
The direct to VHS sequel to an admittedly pretty poor adaptation of Hans Christian Andersen’s classic tale.
At least Julia McKenzie is clearly having fun in this even if it does go into some very strange places. I suppose that’s also to it’s advantage as well.

10/01: Crimson Peak - Complete waste of time. 10/02: The Shining - I know King has moaned about it for many years, but I think it's a great movie, I love revisiting it every October. 10/04: Doctor Sleep - Put off watching this for a long time because I thought it was crazy to make a sequel to The Shining (even though King himself has done so). Along the way I was noticing a few structural issues--the big one being I think they should've held off introducing the magic cultist villains till after the 8 years later time skip--but I rather enjoyed it for most of the movie. Until about the last 5-10 minutes, when it became so unforgivably stupid that it went and soured the entire experience. I will not be revisiting this one. 10/05: Psycho10/06: The Addams Family (1991) 10/09: Ghostbusters10/10: Zombieland(All rewatches) 10/11: - Ghostbusters 2 - Alien10/12 - The Rocky Horror Picture Show10/13 - Beetlejuice10/21 - Friday the 13th (2009)

No Time To Die
Oh I enjoyed that immensely. Didn’t feel like it’s runtime and boasts good action and a great score. I think that was a fine exit for Daniel Craig and am really curious how they take this franchise forward.

The Girl with all the Gifts. I loved the book. It is a great book, and from a parasitologists point of view, a fascinating and very realistic scenario. I was amazed when I first saw a real life cordyceps fungus in real life! Awesome pathogens. As for the movie. It is a good movie, it is dark, bleak and hopeless and devastating. It is however not reaching the epicness and the genius and pacing and greatness of the book. But as far as Zombie movies go, this definitely is one of the better ones.

King T'Challa kicking some serious butt. Took me a few years, but finally got around to watching this. Good movie, even if it follows the relyable Marvel Cinematic Universe formula. Comfort food.

Dune (2021). An enjoyable film but not brilliant. It certainly feels epic & the characters are interesting but not quite as engaging on a human level. Also the cinematography is quite bland with everything looking washed out or dimly lit. I think the 1984 film is certainly more colourful & some of the costume design is better. This one feels a lot safer than the older film which embraced the bizarre a bit more & didn't feel as stately in tone. But overall a good sci-fi fantasy even if it just ends. No real cliffhanger just abruptly ends.

Dune.
Well, after years of waiting - there is finally a fantastic, faithful version of Herbert's Dune out there. It's a masterpiece. Nothing feels CGI, Villeneuve has crossed the Uncanny Valley and everything has weight, scale and heft. When the Atreides' fleet lands...it feels like a fleet landing. Walls shake. Hans Zimmer's score may be the best thing he's done in years. It adds to the film instead of distracting from it like a lot of his percussive scores have since the Nolan Batman films.
Performances across the board are stellar. Perhaps the only issue is that this ends (and the film does have a Part 1 under the title, which the marketing does not) at a point where Paul/Timothee Chalamet is still very much on the learning and mopey side of the heroes' journey. There's a scene added that isn't in the books to give him a more heroic last act.
Still, minor gripe. I do wonder if this is gonna be palpable for the masses who are here for the all star cast maybe expecting action and adventure. Deep, contemplative themes about the self, loyalty, family and honour...I can't see this being a smash. I hope to be wrong as we NEED Part 2 of this vision.

I mention this because Paul’s role as Muad’dib does involve some actions that might alienate a modern (US) audience and it may have been a factor in making two films that we would need to build up a tremendous amount of goodwill towards the character to let him still be the “hero” after he engages in what looks suspiciously like terrorism.

I can't believe it but i completely agree with you...again, we definitely need a Part 2 & I'm a little surprised WB didn't film two films back to back as surely it would've been more cost effective. One of the best films I've seen in 2021, stunning action scenes, great drama, excellent cast & performances & a superb music score from Hans Zimmer. Denis Villeneuve is the next Spielberg in my opinion, if this doesn't get a Part 2 it would be a crime against cinema.

You can see by his expression on the movie posters that he's just thinking about his bank balance, although they seem to use the same photo of him for every movie!
