Wishmaster. This film is still fantastic. Andrew Divoff, just oozes charisma. shame 3 and 4 in the series were absolute s**t First two films are great, you caught this on horror channel?, 3 & 4 were awful & shot back to back to save money & boy does the quality dip. Yeah it was the horror channel. God yeah it does. number 4 is god awful. He falls in love for god sake

I watched the DVD release of Walter Braunfels' Die Vögel (The Birds), as staged by the Los Angeles opera.
It's a musical adaptation of Aristophanes' Birds, and not the Hitchcock film, in case you were wondering, although the latter idea has potential.
The staging was simple and effective. The performers were suitably talented. The costumes were clever, but I've no idea at all why the designer went with an Egyptian motif.
And the designer clearly had no idea what a hoopoe is. Judging from the final costume, he must have thought it was some kind of owl.
Really nice. I'd never seen or heard this one before, and watched it on a recommendation. This is high prize, as standard opera just puts me to sleep.*
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- * Verdi's Aida was great, but I've fallen asleep for every other Italian opera I've ever tried to watch. I've stayed awake for the few German operas I've seen, except for Don Giovanni. It may be Mozart but I couldn't get into it.**
** The only musical production that put me to sleep faster than Mozart's Don Giovanni was Andrew Lloyd Webber's Cats.***
*** I fell solidly asleep during the first ten minutes of Cats on two separate occasions. I have no memory of either production. ****
**** Which is ironic given that the song "Memories" is part of the score.

Watched Mr. Holmes with Ian McKellen. Sorry to say I found it kind of boring. That was my reaction too! Definitely needed a bit of trimming back.

Watched the 1st Avengers & Captain America Winter Soldier. Unpopular opinion I didn't really care for either. Guess I am just not into super hero movies.

Were these your first Marvel Cinematic Universe films? Because I do wonder if those two aren't the most beginner-friendly. Both rely on the developments and status-quo of previous films, in a way that the likes of Iron-Man or Thor don't. If I were trying to get a friend into the MCU, I'd probably recommend watching the pre-Avengers Phase 1 films first.

I mainly picked them bc they were some of the highest rated

I'd suggest watching the first two Iron Mans, as well as the original Thor (which the Avengers is a direct sequel to) and Captain America (there's also the 2008 Hulk, though it's of minimal relevance to anything else.) The MCU is a great franchise, and it'd be a shame if you gave up on it this soon. Additionally, the recently-released Ant-Man film is a fun, stand-alone experience.

The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. Some fun discussion among the people I was watching with and two very good movies. I even used the phrase Sleia to describe Leia in her best known outfit (what she does takes the phrase literally).

Probably Marvel's single lowest-rated release. The first one was astonishing, though. Sorry you didn't like Avengers, Kimalysong. Lots of people who don't like superhero films do dig Guardians of the Galaxy, though.

I wasn't recommending it for enjoyment (I'm well aware of its reputation,) but for its significance in regards to the Avengers. I'll grant that it's not absolutely necessary.

I just watched Song of the Sea.
I don't think I can adequately describe in words the beauty and emotion of this film, but it is by far the most moving film (animated or otherwise) that I have seen in a very long time.

Fantastic choice! I do need to check out their other film, Secret of the Kells, at some point too. I was fairly exhausted watching it though and *may* have fallen asleep for five minutes of it - which surely gives me the perfect excuse to rewatch it. It was an odd cinema experience though as I was the only adult there without a child with me.

Movie 43. Not a great film, but not as awful as i've heard. Definitely more miss than Hit, but i did love the Beezul the Cat sequence and the escalating dares.
