Hey everyone,
Before the Star Wars prequels, how did you imagine Anakin's life?

I thought the characters arc is spot on but Lucas completely miscast the role of Anakin so all the good work became undone.

There's this really nice fanedit of the prequels called The Blackened Mantle where the editor has taken the Japanese dub of the films, intercut them together and rewritten most, if not all of the dialogue. It's unconventional and manages to be quite effective, managing to turn Anakin's somewhat incoherent fall into a desperate effort to prevent his wife from dying as he foresees in his dreams... Only to bring about that terrible future by his own hand. All done for the very best of intentions but instead twisted into something evil by his troubled state following his murder of Dooku. The friendship between Anakin and Obi-Wan feels genuine, his love for Padme real, Grievous and Maul are conflated into a single character and the Jedi actually seem wise in their actions rather than deliberately contrarian.
It really is quite amazing what's been done with the whole story. Definitely worth seeking out if you can find it. That's what I'd like to believe happened.

but lucas wrote a good story but his direction was poor & why the hell did he kill darth maul!!!!!! Because there are only ever 2 sith, the Dark Lord and the apprentice, had Darth Maul not have been killed, Anakin would have never become Darth Sidious's (aka Chancellor Palpatine) apprentice. This only 2 sith thing, is part of what is going off when Palpatine, Vader and Luke are fighting, Palpatine is wanting Luke to join with him, Vader knowing that it will be his death, which is why Vader asks Luke to join him and jointly rule the galaxy, which would as Palpatine well knows, mean Palpatine's death, it's all part of the will he wont he turn to the dark side, and if he does, who will he choose as his master, Palpatine or Vader.

yep well put, but that was not until film 3.
I just think that darth maul, was as good a villian as vader is. To kill him off, when he was pretty much the only thing that had so little criticism was madness. why not leave it ambigious like he did with vader at the end of a new hope.
i liked the way they did bring him back in Clone wars, but Lucas made a mistake killing him so early.
but may be like boba fett that's why we like them because they had so little screen time.

I agree with the Maul thoughts - he's the character you want to see more of after the movie. The only thing that made me like the constantly changing villains is an interpretation that I read... somewhere... that each one of the prequel villains represents a side of Darth Vader. Maul is Palpatine's dragon and a very imposing figure, Dooku is an accomplished Sith and former Jedi with an aristocratic voice and General Grievous is a cyborg with a breathing problem.
But. I still wish they had just kept Maul for the whole thing instead.
Oh. Right. The topic at hand. The Anakin arc. I think it's... fine? The dialogue is garbo at times but the arc itself is believable enough? I don't hate the prequels, they're just not very good movies when viewed critically.

I'd imagined him as being, basically, Luke, except a banker.

Agree, Maul was way better than Dooku & I'd have liked to seen him be the villain in Clones & had Anakin & Ben fight him.

Never imagined him as a kid, i mean it's a given that he was a child once, just never imagined or wanted to see it on screen. Anakin's portrayal in Ep:III was probably how i envisaged him, but a bit older and less whiny. In my head he was just a younger Sebastian Shaw, so it was hard to shake that.
