Does anybody else hate it when you're watching a TV show that isn't a drama with someone else - be it family or another type of person - and you try to talk, only for them to tell you to 'shut up'?
It really annoys me because I don't see how it matters if it isn't a drama. Soaps, documentaries, light entertainment show, charity sport etc...are all easy to follow anyway. You don't need to listen to what they're saying. I like to talk about what's going on on TV whilst it's on because to me television should be interactive. Granted, with a drama it is annoying because they require more concentration but not with anything else.
Does anyone else find this annoying or just me?

Sorry got to disagree. Much as I have a distaste for soaps, I can say for certain that getting involved and following the unfolding drama is just as engrossing for its fans as any other form of drama can be.
I also have to disagree with you about documentaries, documentaries often explain things and to do so by building layers of understanding upon each other, if you miss part of the documentary because someone insists on talking over it, you can spend the rest of the documentary lost.
Sport much the same, people can really get into their chosen sport, the moment can be intense and totally immersive, last thing you need is someone wanting to talk about something.
Immersion is not the exclusive reserve of "serious" drama, and there are those that cast scorn on sci-fi as cheap/trash/poor drama, I'm sure you would object if they used their view of your chosen thing to justify them talking all over it.
Your looking at the value judgement you assign to something and forcing that value on someone else, not taking into consideration that they will have their own value judgements.
EDIT: Just wanted to add, it is the engagement/immersion of the viewer that counts to them, not a 3rd parties opinion about what or how much they should be engaged.

No. People like different things and will not want to have it talked over just because you dont care for it. This shouldn't be a surprise.

TV is an immersive experience - so, I can understand. If someone doesn't want to open up a conversation about the program, then just leave things be

There’s a horror movie called Alien? That’s really offensive. No wonder everyone keeps invading you.

I'm with davygallagher on this one: we're all individuals ("I'm not") and different things stimulate our molecules differently. I like to be able to take in as much as possible when it's something I enjoy - drama, comedy, the rare soap, documentary, book, music - and often conversation can get in the way of it. Or, as my wife likes to say, "You're the only guy I ever dated who went to the movies to watch the movie."

To be fair to Dalekbuster, there have been times where the thing the other person I've been with is watching something SO vacant that I think "Why do we need hushed silence for this?". I mean, my mum when i lived at home wouldn't let you talk over QVC I still don't get it, but hey...if she likes watching some cheesy failed kids tv presenter flogging cheap diamonique, she's welcome to. The one I DO hate...on more than one occasion someone has tried to shush me at the cinema DURING THE ADVERTS. Not even the trailers, which I do go quiet for but the adverts for cars, perfumes and the like. I'm not going to have a reverant silence for Mercedes, Lynx and Sony anytime soon though so those people were told what to do with the shushes.

She even records what she misses. I don't get it. I honestly can't think of anything more boring to watch.

I often have comments but hypocritically want to hear every single word onscreen when other folks have comments. So, I'm all about pausing things when you want to say something and the great thing is that we're getting to the point where all media has that button available.

For me I'm on both sides. Sometimes yes i do hate when people ask me something while I'm watching something I've been waiting for, but then i also understand if theres something i really to ask and it cant wait.
Although my stepmum does have a tendency to ask whats happening, when a show is doing the exposition scene lmao

Hell....
I'll tell myself to shut up if I catch myself talking over TV. I suppose we don't watch much "heavy" TV, but whether it's Archer, John Oliver, or Who, I don't like missing lines (and/or jokes) because someone is talking.
Still, we watch virtually nothing live, so we can just rewind.

People have different preferences when it comes to watching television. Even if you think it's easy to follow a show that isn't drama while talking, maybe others aren't just watching to follow; maybe they do want to hear every word. Maybe they'd be disappointed to have missed out on a one-liner because someone else talked over it not knowing a joke was about to happen. Maybe they have their own train of thought that goes on as they watch something, even if it seems vacant, and don't want to be distracted from their own thoughts.
Either way, it's probably best to be upfront about it if you prefer to have a conversation during the show you're watching, since some people like it and others don't. I have friends who gather groups to watch a show together, with the explicit acknowledgement that there will be side commentary, for example, and others who who make it known that they prefer no talking so no one misses anything.

If someone spoke during Calapadi's Zygon speech they'd be shushed. If someone spoke during Tombo's scene in "Day of the Doctor" they'd be shushed.
It's not the genre that dictates the shushing, it's the attention the shusher wants to pay to it.

People have different preferences. Generally, if they are immersed in watching a show, they don't want someone talking over the show. Some of my co-workers make it a point of taking lunch when their favorite soap opera is on and heaven forbid if anyone talks in the employee lounge when it's on. That's frankly annoying, cause it's a place for all the employees to take a break. Other than that, though, I respect a person's preference for no talking when they're watching a show.
