Been out of the loop for a while. Anybody any clearer on why exactly it was canned?
Was it really overload from Series 9 discussions? Was it too expensive? Where people getting THAT tired of the Magister known as Magnus?

Where people getting THAT tired of the Magister known as Magnus? Him and other individuals and an official perception that there was too much negativity being posted towards the TV Show but it stills burns how abruptly BF took the decision, not only on Series premier day but also during a BF Day Convention.

You mean it wasn't spectrox poisoning? As Jason said, the linked thread offers some reasons as to why it closed - it would have been nice had there been some warning, but we did at least find a new home here.

And a jolly nice home it is. I can understand the frustration and sadness behind the original forum closing, but all in all, I think it's worked out for the best. Even if I don't tend to visit the website as often as I once did.

The gist is that it was getting harder for the mods to moderate, and the then-upcoming series 9 was likely to be a major catalyst for Moffat naysayers coming out and complaining (very likely to turn ugly). If it was half as critical as some of the feedback on Gallifrey Base then I can understand why the choice was made to shut down the forum. What is less understandable is why there wasn't much communication about it. There was just the post on the 21st of September, and that was it. Since then the forum hasn't been so much as mentioned in news stories or podcasts. I can also remember the spam attacks that'd show up periodically where a number of sections would be bombarded with advertising for a Middle-Eastern appliance repair place. At least Divergent Universe allowed the less aggressive of us to find somewhere to reconnect. The user known as M.M., I can recall his avatar was the Taran Wood Beast. I'm actually looking at the old forum now. There's an interesting thread in the forum feedback section.

It's Big Finishes loss & The Divergent Universes gain, they thought they could spilt us up but we said no, were like a family, sometimes we disagree, sometimes arguments get heated but when push comes to shove we stick together to find a new home.
Those bloody spam messages used to wind me up, I'm surprised something couldn't be done to stop that.
I didn't like how Big Finish handled the situation treating us like imbeciles, as our community has mostly been a respectable one, it has left a bitter taste & i don't feel as personally attached to Big Finish like i used too.
But I'm proud of our community, I'm proud of how this forum has grown & evolved, i was sceptical it would work or maintain the same warmth as the old forum but i think this forum is even better & because of how the original forum closed it's made us a tighter knitted community, i truly feel the love & warmth on this forum unlike any other.
I keep hearing about Gallifrey Base it sounds like the Mos-Esley of Doctor Who fandom, i have never been on there & i never will if it's as aggressive as i keep hearing about.

The spam messages were spambots, and by the time Ian or Joe noticed their presence was big. Gallifrey Base isn't too bad during quiet periods, it's when there's a new episode or big news announced that things can turn ugly. At least with forums you've got the luxury of selecting what you want to read, so if a thread doesn't interest you or gets hostile you can hop right out and never look back. The advantage of a sea of faces (I've been watching Dark Shadows recently, and the opening narration is fascinated with the term 'sea of faces' at the moment) instead of a lake is that you're less likely to get singled out. Even being told in advance or addressing the closure elsewhere on the main website (not everyone follows Big Finish on the social media platforms) would have been nice. At least recognise alternative forums people can go to, like here. For me at least Facebook and Twitter don't offer the level of social interaction that a forum does, in term of discussion at least.

Judging from my own experiences, I'd say it's more like Rio de Janeiro. Fascinating place if you know where to look, but primarily a veritable fountainhead of crass muggings and savagery. Actually, no, I tell a lie. It's closer to the depiction of the Congo in Conrad's Heart of Darkness. Courtesy and deference are inconstant at best.

I see gallifrey Base as more like the city planet where the cenate is... curasant?
There's just too much shouting and trafic.
