Really, Chimes? Among the worst of Big Finish? I find that interesting. I wouldn't say The Chimes of Midnight was among the WORST Big Finish (few things come close to the likes of Nekromanteia), but I would say it was lower mid-range. I think people build it up too much for new listeners (or at least this listener) so that it can never quite reach the expectations put on it, reducing a listeners' (at least this listeners') opinion even further. Much like The Holy Terror... though, for me, I think that's getting quite close to Nekromanteia... i agree chimes is not a terrible story, it just passes a fair for me i never understand the praise it gets. i have listened to it now 4 times in the hope "i get it" but with each re-listen i just think no, don't like it. apart from jubilee (which i adore, maybe it's the singing Daleks and Dalek juice mmmmm) i am not a fan of rob shearman work. but each to their own, i think for all most every title you will find 10% who love it, 40% who like it, 40% who think it's just ok & 10% who hate it.

Fair points, both of you. I find the differences of opinion on these and other stories really interesting. There seem to be only a few that are showing up consistently as bad across multiple listeners.

I'd heard such great things about Chimes that it was a real anti-climax when I listened to it. I mean it's very atmospheric and well-acted and everything, but the hype definitely left me wondering what it was I wasn't 'getting'. I suspect the people who love it best are the ones who heard it early on before the hype reached critical mass. Chriss C.

Chimes is one of my absolute favorites and it definitely lived up to the hype for me. I did listen to it pretty early on in my personal Big Finish first time listens but I had also seen all the high praise for it before listening.
I think the thing about Chimes that stands out the most for me is it actually made me cry over a character I only met once. I was just so invested in Edith's character's and the notion of self worth. I also love how what happened in Storm Warning is first shown to have consequences here. Charley and the Doctor's chemistry first connected for me here.
It also has tons of great quotable lines & has the creepy Christmas feel I love. I think it has everything humor, scares, and most importantly heart.
Don't get me wrong I completely understand not loving something as much as everyone else. It can be disappointing when you look forward to something because of the hype but it just doesn't live up to that. But I guess that's the thing about hype there is always going to be someone who doesn't enjoy something as much as everyone else. It works the other way too sometimes you really enjoy something that most people dislike. Just the nature of the beast.
I will say the final mystery of what was going on in Chimes ended up being less interesting to me but of course on relistens that hardly matters.

You've convinced me to listen again today and I hope some of your evident enthusiasm for Chimes has rubbed off...
I do think the best thing about Big Finish is the incredible breadth of stories and characters which allows every listener to have a favourite story, and it's so true that every listener's favourite story is different.
We're a pretty lucky fandom really, to have Big Finish and all the other types of media that make this world such a rich one!

For me, it's a tie between Minuet in Hell & Exile.

Time loop makes house sentient? Blech. I still love The Holy Terror.

Based on the rubric of "stuff I've removed from my iPod": Chimes of Midnight, New Adevntures of Benny 2, Dark Eyes 4, The Reaping. Really, Chimes? Among the worst of Big Finish? I find that interesting. I found it fundamentally mean spirited and felt unlike an episode of Doctor Who. If it was an episode of Sapphire and Steel it would have been fine.

Haven't seen it mentioned, but I actively disliked the minds eye. Listened to it for the first time last night. found it to be predictable, cliched and utterly unremarkable.

The Abandoned has to be the most annoying thing I have ever heard. And Louise Jameson is a great writer, as her scripts on the Survivors range prove Dreamstime is just pretentious nonsense Pity. I quite liked the trippy dreamscapes of Dreamtime. Maybe I'm just a sucker for mysticism. The Abandoned.... okay, I won´t argue with you there. It wasn't up to snuff.

Dreamtime also incorporated Aboriginal culture into the plot, which is a nice change from generic colony set up or more British/US-centric like Star Trek.
