A highly enjoyable romp. I enjoyed how authentic the setting felt and Mel and Ace together works just as well as I was anticipating it would based on their chemistry in "Dragonfire". I've always liked Mel and I felt she got to be really awesome in this, especially when what's really going on with Mel comes out in episode 4. Hopefully, we'll get many stories with Seven, Ace and Mel in the future.

I enjoyed this a lot. I was actually quite surprised that the response is so mixed in the other posts.
As others have said, the best thing here is Mel getting more of a character. I've always liked Mel more than most and I never thought she needed redeemed particularly but it's still nice that she gets something so fun focused on her.
I think what I've always liked about Mel is that after so many companions who seemed to hate their life on the TARDIS half the time, or downright wanted to leave, it was just great to have someone on board who was truly in love with the travelling, the exploring and the discovery. Of all the companions of the era Mel is the one it makes sense would want to stay out in space and time after leaving The Doctor. She wasn't ever going back to a life of Thatcher and yuppies in Pease Pottage was she?.
My favourite moment in this was the scene where Mel and The Doctor confront each other over how different they've both become but they soon realise they're essentially the same people after all. McCoy can be guilty of playing anger when the script calls for other emotions but his genuine hurt that he may have turned Mel into someone reckless and violent comes through as does his relief when he finds Mel hasn't been as responsible for events as he thought.
Ace, though, was a bit of a pain in the bahookie. This is the post-Hex ace, on the verge of learning more about the TARDIS and how to fly it and, ultimately, having her own adventure on Gallifrey yet the minute Mel shows up Ace becomes the jealous 16 year old for no real reason. In the news story announcing the Mel/Ace teaming Alan Barnes talks about how he liked teaming up Mel with the sarcy, untamed Ace. I think that's just the wrong approach. This isn't the Ace of Dragonfire, she's gone through so much that reverting her to Season 24/25's portrayal just doesn't seem right.
A word for Ginny Holder as Gloria. It was a fun part but she elevated it quite a bit with her performance. Having a nemesis for Mel, of all people, was a nice development.

Late to the party on this one..... Problem for me was mel's twist was obvious from the word go, so it all felt run of the mill. The BBC would not let a former companion turn criminal, that would be to far a stretch for the licence if it had been a BF companion it may not have been so obvious. The doctor regen confusion was a nice idea but just didn't work. Nice to have Mel back but the fudged how long since I left & tardis following her just made it seem a bit contrived to fit the situation rather than BF's usual high quality story telling. Didn't get the reason to have a raccoon only to look good on cover and to try to gain GOTG curious audience.
I feel this was one of BF's weaker releases in a long time, not bad just lacking.

I enjoyed this release. It was obvious, of course, that the regeneration wasn't real, and I was kind of surprised the Mel was taken in by it - till I realized she wasn't! The young lefty/old lefty thing was kind of confusing to me. But otherwise a lot of fun. And I did notice the mention of Tim Bradley by Sophie in the extras and thought, hey, that's our Tim.

Great review. I still have not gotten that one. But might give it a go one day, maybe it is on sale in the 7th Doctor sale next week.
I also think it is cool that Sophie Aldred mentioned you!

And it is indeed on sale. Now I have to get it, shouldn't I? Thank you for the recommendation.
