Eh, they always felt more like they belonged in a comic/superhero thing than a sci-fi show. I wouldn't mind if I never heard from them again. Are you thinking of the Guardians of the Universe from Green Lantern? Considering what they let happen, such as the Manhunters, Blackest Night, the Third Army, Wrath of the First Lantern etc, the Guardians in Doctor Who are preferable. Negligent to deal with big threats at best (and punishing Hal for trying to stop those threats) and endangering the cosmos at worst. Even after they're gone their legacy still comes back to haunt the Green Lantern Corps.

They have taken male form in the past, but there is really no reason they couldn't take female form. They aren't men or women. I actually like the idea of a Guardian taking female form than a Timelord switching genders with regeneration. In fact, I think it would be cool if the Guardians were played by a different actor or actress every time they were seen. Like they just don't have enough understanding of humanity to check the details about what they looked like the last time they had to talk to one of us. Just stick the same bird on each actor's head and it'll be clear that they're the same character. No one else would dress like that.

Perhaps I'll think of a better way to put it, but they were basically a more ambiguous God:Devil relationship. They smelled too much like a deity, even in a show where you have creatures from another universe who appear indistinguishable from actual gods, say, Fenric. Their appearance also calls into my mind Tom Baker's criticism of the guardian arc from his autobiography... Anyway, what more can one really do with them? BF already expanded. I suppose the only other place that might make sense is an appearance in the Time War.....

Doctor Who's already got talking trees. And a talking racoon is no more ridiculous than a shapeshifting penguin.

I can't say specifically, but when your really just not interested, it's really easy not to see stuff. If I hated comic book stuff, I'd see it, if I loved comic book stuff I'd see it, but as it basically doesn't register with me one way or the other, I just don't see it.

I don't have a strong feeling one or the other on whether the Guardians should return. If there's a good story involving them, I say, bring it on. But they shouldn't be brought back just for the sake of bringing them back.

I think you'd like Guardians of the Galaxy. Strictly speaking it is a comicbook movie but it's more of a space opera than a part of the superhero genre. I don't know if you like Back to the Future but it's got a very similar tone to BTTF - there's even a cool 80s soundtrack.

Also, I can't help but feel there's a Black Guardian by my shoulder...

What you just said also applies to the Time Lords too, they are not human, remember? Marc Platt did a great job to make them as alien as are possible until RTD spoil it all with the Tenth Doctor. And that of "switching genders" may explain the asexual nature of the Time Lords and the classic Doctors.

I would have liked to see the Guardians before, in another the Key to Time saga to repair the damage to the universe and time web because of the Time War. That's my theory why not see consequences of the Time War in the New Series as we saw in the books of the Eighth Doctor.

And that of "switching genders" may explain the asexual nature of the Time Lords and the classic Doctors. Really? Did we really need RTD bashing in this thread? The Timelords have DNA. My biggest problem with regenerating into the opposite sex is that they have DNA. It has nothing to do with being "human". There are a thousand variables that can be expressed by DNA, except for the chromosomes that express sexual orientation. Plus, just for a way to get your audience invested there has to be something that makes a character stay true to that character throughout his/her regenerations. They change face, body, personality so what is the thread that carries through that individual's life? Finally, I have a hard time believing that a species that is higher than a worm evolved with such fluid gender expression when EVERYTHING ELSE ABOUT THEM IS HUMANOID. Now, I haven't read Lungbarrow, so I don't really understand the looming stuff, but it seems to me that it makes no sense from an evolutionary standpoint. (The above is not taking about transgender as it relates to humans. That is a completely different subject from what I am describing above.) The Guardians are higher beings that take humanoid form. No DNA or icky evolution to worry about. So they would have to pay attention to details and remember them every time they wanted to mix with us lower beings. That's where I'm coming from.
