Back as Nardole, interesting, at least they've got someone in support with a known public profile, and hopefully better material this time round.
Frank Cottrell Boyce back writing the 2nd EP though,,,

It's been interesting reading up on the chap because I don't actually remember him being on the show. From what I've read, the announcement of his return could be described as lukewarm at the very best and the people that actually do recall the character absolutely hated him.

Ohh look at that. I've lost all interest in series 10.

I doubt anyone saw that coming.
Honestly, I found the character massively annoying but it was a very kiddie-friendly one I suppose. I guess that's what they're going for after a series 9 that, while I adored it, surely didn't do much for the average pre-teen. It was a quite moody, introspective season so I guess Matt's here for some comic relief.
If he's a regular he'll need to be toned down from the special. There's no way that OTT performance works longer term. Matts capable of it and Moffat is no fool so I'm sure that will happen.

I remember reading where Catherine Tate was joining the show and, based on her character in The Runaway Bride, thought oh god no. I just had much the same reaction reading this piece of news. I can only hope I am wrong about being nervous a second time and Moffat makes me take to Nardole the way I took to and adored Donna.

Donna had numerous scenes like on the roof, or convincing The Doctor to show mercy, that showed there was something more there from the start - a melancholy and a big heart. I'd be amazed if anyone thought anything as deep as those was even hinted at in Matt Lucas' character. Still, he's a fun presence on screen, the character will absolutely be better defined just by nature of not being 4th billed in a single episode and, well, if he does travel for at least some of the series then maybe the fans who continually demand an alien companion, or someone from another time will get their wish. Not perhaps how they expected. It's an odd, unexpected move but it could be something really cool. In Moffat I Still Trust.

I won't pre-judge, but I must admit I'm a bit apprehensive about this.
Nardole is a very OTT character which worked okay as a one-off, but would need to be very carefully handled if people are going take the role seriously as a longer term character, unless Doctor Who is going to be moving to a more wacky/zany/aren't-we-crazy vibe, which is another debate entirely and in which case, Nardole will probably be the least of our worries...

If you want to see some of the worst, most reactionary examples of fandom check out the FB announcement of Matt's return and the comments specifically. Jesus...a deluge of nonsense ranging from passive-aggressive to foaming at the mouth. Either way, it seems most of them have seen Series 10 already as they're happy to tell us Matt's character doesn't work in it and shouldn't be there. When I made a comment I got a response saying the show is being dumbed down for Americans and Australians. Coming after Series 9, the least dumbed down season going, I can't fathom it. A healthy skepticism is understandable for a character like this but the bile and hate? With friends like these...

That's why I'm happy here in our own little pocket dimension. As for the news itself, I can't say I'm too excited. Or bothered. It just seems like a super weird choice. Is he a second companion or a recurring character, I wonder? The way they talk about it makes him sound like a companion, but I've seen plenty of Doctor Who casting announcements that say "on board the TARDIS" when they mean "on the show" (most recently Samuel Anderson and Maisie Williams) so I'm skeptical of that.

OH NO! can the news get any worse.
a doctor I don't like, a Wisemouth teenager and an imbecile.
I want to be positive but head in hands moment here.
Mr Moffat is certainly making some bold choices for his final series.

...That is surprising... I can't say I found the character very memorable in the Xmas special-he was quite OTT which worked rather in a campy one off Xmas special, but I didn't finish watching that episode with a pressing desire to see him again (didn't he end up with his head stuck on a cyborg?), so yeah this strikes as a...odd decision. On the other hand, Lucas is a decent enough actor with great comic timing, so I'm not going to judge things until we see more of him in action (the very fact that they've decided to bring him back as a recurring character seems to show they are keen to develop him in very difference directions), it will interesting to see how Capaldi will work with what is presumably a male companion (of sorts...though maybe he becomes the Series 10 villain?)...I wonder if they brought back Lucas (a comedian first and foremost) deliberately to appeal to a more broader/younger audience? is this hinting at a lighter tone for series 10? Looking at the facebook page there seems to be a very lukewarm reaction so far, which reminds me of the initial reaction to Catherine Tate's Donna (seriously, judging by the official facebok page it seems the 'fans' would only be happy if they had exactly the same stuff regurgitated week in week out with no surprises, changes or creative experiments on Moffat's part...some of the 'fans' never seem happier than when they are hating the show they profess to love...) Honestly I much less thrilled with the announcement that the writer of In the Forest Of The Sh*te is returning...then again Kill The Moon wasn't great, and the Zygon 2-parter proved to be a huge improvement. Overall though the Capaldi era of New Who has been my favourite since the show returned (I do think Series 4/5 just nudged out Series 9, but Capaldi is my favourite New Who doctor), I'm just glad we are finally getting closer to Series 10... Interesting to note they haven't confirmed anything about the 2016 Xmas special yet...Paul McGann confirmed?

Oddly enough that describes how I feel about 10, Rose and Mickey most of the time...

I told some friends about this today. At first, they didn't believe me. Then I showed them the Internet page. I'm sorry to anyone who diagrees with me on this, but this is one of the worst decisions made in the shows history. And it does seem to suggest he's going to be a companion. It doesn't help Frank Cotteral Boyce is writing a story. I'm now questioning the BBC's decisions over the last year with Doctor Who. First, they announce a new spin-off which nobody cares about... at all. Then they postpone the series a year due to Moffat leaving. They replace Moffat with Chibnall instead of better writers (Toby Whithouse, Peter Harness or Mark Gatiss). Then hype up a companion reveal to make it seem like it was the biggest in the shows history only to have it be another traditional companion. Then this...

Is he going to be walking around in that robot suit the whole time? I really hope not. That was unfunny and embarrassing.

Then hype up a companion reveal to make it seem like it was the biggest in the shows history only to have it be another traditional companion. Then this... I'm surprised Boyce has come back as well... As for your other points: -Class sounds like it could be quite interesting, the BBC can't really afford or schedule more than one series of Who a year so at least this gives us more Whoniverse content, Who is at it's a heart a program aimed at younger audiences, a teenager aimed spinoff sounds like a good idea to gauge/increase interest in the teenager age range. RTD had no interest or time to continue Torchwood, more SJA couldn't happen, the BBC approached Moffat about a Strax+Co spinoff -They didn't really have much choice but to postpone Series 10, Moffat and the crew were exhausted, Moffat had to work on Sherlock series 4 and help set up Class at the same time (whilst its' true RTD had a hand in Torchwood and the SJA he only wrote a handful of episodes of each and largely left the show in other producers hands), would you rather he further divided his time and increase his workload? it's not like the BBC have a backup experienced showrunner on call to parachute in a moments notice for a year... -Judging by the rumours/articles I've read over the years, I wouldn't be at all surprised to find it Chibnall was the only writer deem experienced enough by the BBC that actually wanted, and was able to commit to the job, Gattis and Harness have very limited showrunning experience, the BBC was hardly going to sign up an in-expereinced producer to a 3 or 4 year contract on one of it's biggest money makers, Chibnall ran Torchwood for two years already...

You all know what I think of NuWho.
I was never a fan of Catherine Tate, before DW, and I wasn't a fan of her during. The comedy in Partner In Crime was forced, awkward, and unfunny. I didn't like Donna - a loud mouth. They made her character another impossible companion by becoming Doctor Donna. Fine, they had her absorb all that information, but once extracted they said if she remembered she'd die. She did remember. And, should have died!
I'm not a fan of Matt Lucas either. For a funny man, he's not funny. His last comedy was a flop. The DW character was annoying, and unfunny. Not looking good for series 10.
