In Horror of Glam Rock, is that Sherridan Smith going "Doo waa hoo" in the glam rock version of the theme? Whoever it is has the smokiness of her voice.

My predictions: You'll like series 2 a lot more than series 1, and you'll end up loving Lucie.
I didn't know what to think of Lucie after Blood of the Daleks, but she is now my favorite original BF companion. I generally agree with you on your ratings, although I give Glam Rock a slightly lower score and Phobos a slightly higher score. Looking forward to your thoughts on the next season.

Overall, a fine start to the EDAs. I admit, the following three series are infinitely more interesting to me, but Blood of the Daleks is amongst my favorites from the range. I liked Human Resources quite a bit too. The others were good, but nothing I've returned to listen to. Phobos isn't the best, but I don't think it's quite as bad as people make it out to be. I just could NOT get interested in No More Lies for some reason.
I confess, much as I grew to like Lucie, I never liked her as much as I adored Charley. To me, she just didn't feel... unique enough to justify her existence. She felt a bit too much like Donna. Let me backpedal for a second to clarify that, yes, I really grew to like Lucie, it just took quite a while for her to grow on me.

The Eighth Doctor seems to be, if not exactly angry, a bit harder-edged in Series 1 (perhaps in reaction to Charley's departure), and that was something I missed in the later series. The combative relationship between him and Lucie works pretty well and his speech to the entity in "Phobos" (when he shows it his fears) is chilling. I also think the stories in Series 1 are generally strong with the exception of "Immortal Beloved," which I thought was confusing and not very involving (and is basically a ripoff of a Roger Zelazny novel). "No More Lies" is a classic and possibly my favorite story of the entire run.
I thought Series 2 was merely OK (started very weak and gradually improved), with a mix of blah stories that drag on and some great ideas curtailed by the NuWho-friendly running time. Series 3 is a similarly frustrating experience.
Most annoying in Series 3 is Eight's tendency to say things like "Lucie Miller, you're brilliant," or "Lucie Miller, [insert compliment]," as if the writers were trying to sell us on the character's likeability. I'm not a big fan of Lucie (and I've heard her last few stories, so I know where the character is headed). She's unpleasantly rude in the way she interrupts the Doctor during his explanations -- yawning or saying he's boring -- and she's head-slappingly airheaded at times (Charley could be a little grating, but she was never deliberately rude or stupid).

Just started the 8DAs awhile back. I've heard the odd one before, and some of the ones with Carole Ann Ford, but it's the first time I've tried to go through the range from start to finish. I've gotten as far as 3.6 The Cannibalists and I don't think there's been any story I didn't like. Phobos was just a little frustrating in that I felt that the story featured a very interesting landscape that for some reason I wasn't really able to picture properly. I enjoyed Horror of Glam Rock even more the second time around (and the doo-wop theme is really catchy). I like Lucie Miller and Charley both quite a bit, I think about equally for both similar and different reasons, and the developing familiarity between Lucie and The Doctor has been a joy to hear. (Series 2/3 spoiler) That Lucie and The Doctor's relationship seems to suffer a sort of temporary setback as the second series is ending and the third series begins is the only significant complaint I can think of having so far. No idea why that happened but I don't think it was needed to keep things from getting stale. |

Blood of the Daleks, Phobos, Human Resources are three of my favourite Eighth Doctor audio dramas, this series was a breath of fresh air after the downbeat endings to Absolution & Girl Who Never Was.
I'd love Sheridan Smith to reprise the role of Lucy for tv.

I liked the tone and characters (and closing theme) of Horror of Glam Rock and the ideas of Immortal Beloved. Blood of the Daleks was also a solid opener. I can't remember anything about Phobos except that it was about thrill seekers on the titular Martian moon, yet I remember that I liked it.
The EDAs stand out to me as some of the most consistently good stuff that Big Finish has done with Doctor Who and very well might be the most accessible to new listeners, which, of course, is what they were aiming for given that Doctor Who had just returned to TV when they launched.

Something that always confused me about Blood of the Daleks was the utter absence of Lucy Miller from the cover other than being slightly obscured by McGann under the logo. While there's a lovely big photo of Whatsherface who plays Agent Carter on the second disc!

When done right, that kind of thing can raise goose bumps, and I am rather partial to Sylvester McCoy; it's rather credible when he menaces (I'm thinking of a certain MR story in the Hex arc) |

Interesting. Having reached the season finale for Season 2, I was of the opinion that, while for the most part they're consistently above the "bad" line, I'm not feeling that they're as amazing as the general fan seems to think (IMO, obviously). Although from past experience, a relisten will help with that somewhat. See, I would actually agree that few in Season 1 or 2 are amazing. Personally, my favourites overall were Horror of Glam Rock, The Zygon Who Fell to Earth, Orbis, Death in Blackpool, Situation Vacant and Relative Dimensions, but they're all consistently good. |

I just recently finished listening through the first series. Overall I found it to be a very strong season. Blood of The Daleks and Human Resources are exciting bookends that I enjoyed quite a bit. I found Horror of Glam Rock to be the strongest single part episode and Immortal Beloved and No More Lies were solid. Phobos is the only episode that I was dissatisfied with. It felt like it had unrealized potential.
I'll also echo previous posts about Lucie Miller. She's my favorite original Big Finish companion so far. It actually didn't take me any time to warm up to her, either. She and the Doctor just clicked for me right away. I hope we'll hear some more full cast stories with Lucie and Eight some day.

I started a re-listen of Human Resources today. It made me realize just how much I miss the team of Eight and Lucie. How much, you ask? So much that is hurts.
