I just listened to this boxset, during some offline time in the last few days.
I always understood the point of the Unbound Doctors was to explore things that couldn't be explored by the actual Doctor. If that's the case, what in these stories needed an Unbound Doctor, sure there were elements that were directly connected to the idea that this wasn't "The Doctor", but it would have taken little to find alternative ideas or causality that could have meant that "The Doctor" could have had these adventures. So what was the point, from a story telling point of view, of using an alternative universe and Doctor?

However, at least one of those Marvel What If comics did feature an event that actually did become part of modern Marvel continuity. ('What If' #10 specifically.) So BF might want to bring one of their Unbound based ideas over to mainstream continuity one day if the think the idea would work or fit the modern purpose. A good idea is a good idea regardless of the universe!

I think it basically allows you to tinker around with the fundamental mythos of the series in a way that you wouldn't be able to otherwise like having the Daleks of the Alt!Warner 'verse experience a very similar makeover to that of the Ice Warriors from The Curse of Peladon onwards. The David Collings incarnation is a good example of a story that could never really be told outside of Full Fathom Five because of how firmly established our own canonical Doctors' morals are. Deadline likewise explores the series in a way that would be very difficult to do without shoehorning in our real Doctor somewhere and to be honest, he's not really needed. Sympathy for the Devil even worked on a metatextual level as "What if Doctor Who had been cancelled in 1969 and later revived in 1997?" It also allows for us to see actors assume roles that we wouldn't have been able to see otherwise, I think the cosmos would be a lesser place if not for each actors' own efforts at establishing their "What if?" Doctor. It's a shame that the Unbound series has been almost permanently curtailed actually. A Warner!Doctor and Benny Summerfield matchup is marvellous, but I can't help feeling that there are a lot of other equally interesting possibilities that are currently left unexplored. From those I remember, there was... - What if the Third Doctor had been exiled to Skaro circa The Curse of the Daleks?
- What if a rogue Dalek stole both a time vessel and a hatchery of gestating mutants, fleeing to the ashen surface of Gallifrey where monsters dwell in isolation, trapped within their mighty city?
- What if Ian and Barbara hijacked the TARDIS without the Doctor or Susan?
- What if the Fifth Doctor had been too weak to leave the caves before the mud-burst?
- What if the Master had hijacked the Fourth Doctor's body rather than Tremas?

For me, one of the most compelling things about having these adventures take place in the unbound universe is that the continuity that we all know and love, both in terms of the fictional universal history already laid down and the characterisation of the Doctor doesn't totally apply. Things don't seem quite as safe. I'm a fan of this unpredictable Doctor and I'm looking forward to the next boxset. Do I need to worry that there's no hint of it on the Coming Soon pages?

What if (I've mentioned this in passing elsewhere) Benny and the Unbound Doctor ended up in the DU?

What if (I've mentioned this in passing elsewhere) Benny and the Unbound Doctor ended up in the DU? The WarnerDoc should stay in his universe, but avuniverse where the Doctor never left the DU could be interesting to explore. How would the War have gone without the Doctor for example.

Well a war of a sort IS referenced in the AV universe, and positing how it might have gone without him is a bit futile since we barely know how it went WITH him, to be fair.

I have to admit, I'm rather impatient to hear news on the fourth set. The third set is amongst my favorite releases from 2016 (though, then again, all of 2016's releases were very, very strong).

I also want to hear Bernice meet up with 7 post all this and for her to simply say "You'd never believe me" when he asks her what she's been up to

After much puttering about and delaying I finally made time to start NABS 3! I just finished the first two stories, and I am very much in love with this range! I'm just gonna bullet-point my reactions so far: - I'm aware Benny came first, but humor me: I'm really enjoying Bernice Summerfield as a character so far, largely because she feels like "River Song done right." River never really clicked for me, and so far it seems Benny is a very similar character--but minus all of the perfunctory flirtation and with the addition of an acerbic wit (and a bit more attitude) she's a lot more fun.
- I wound up being "accidentally" introduced to Benny a few days early in The Legacy of Time, where they implied she'd had some adventures with the 8th Doctor--AFAIK none have yet been recorded, but I'm already chomping at the bit for a Benny + 8 + Unblund Doctor story.
- I guess this arc could basically be read as Big Finish's take on a 9DA arc in the absence of Christopher Ecclestone? IE all about a weary and cynical Doctor grappling with the fallout from an apocalyptic war, in which he played no small part, where his actions have earned him the mistrust of everyone else in the universe? Cool, cool, cool, cool, cool.
- So I get why it's not necessary, I am a bit disappointed with how... abrupt the story begins. I'd've liked to have seen what, exactly, led to this war--why everything turned to shit, basically. The Unbound duology left a lot of hanging threads: what happened to Earth? What happened to the Brigadier? Hopefully they at least allude to the answers in future stories.
- David Warner really does have a voice, does he not?
- So is this Unbound Universe meant to be a 1:1 analog to our "prime" universe? EG is there another Bernice Summerfield Wanderung about here, somewhere? Or maybe she ended poorly in the war....
- And speaking of the Unbound range, and I guess this is technically off-topic but oh well, do y'all think all eight stories can fit into the same universe? EG the First Doctor leaves Gallifrey late, regenerates into the Exile Doctor, who in turn is captured by the Time Lords and forced to regenerate into Warner's Third Doctor? (I haven't listened to Exile yet as I've heard very bad things.)
- And lastly I really gotta comment on the chemistry between the Doctor and Benny. It's perfect! So seldom do I encounter two actors that play off of each other so well, so soon. From almost the very first scene, their dynamic was captivating.
- Okay for-realsies last point: speaking of that last scene? I lol'd hard. I was so psyched for this set and the I started it and it began soooooo anti-climactically. The Doctor just pops up and drags Benny to another universe with no explanation. Glorious.
This month I've binged through a lot of audios. I started the Gallifrey series in July, and am now deep into both NABS and the (also uniformly excellent) 1DAs. I cannot possibly overstate how much I adore all of these ranges. And while it may be premature after only two stories, I think NABS might be my favorite range now.
Have I mentioned yet that I've been an enormous fan of David Warner since I was a kid? I may be a bit biased here....
I think I'm gonna take a short break from NABS:3 for now, and listen to the other half later. I've learned from my Gallifrey binge that the stories don't stick as strongly in my memory as I'd like when I listen to a lot of them at once. I also took advantage of this weekend's sale to grab NABS: 2 for cheap, so I'll probably listen to that first before finishing 3. Hopefully I'll be back soon with more to say and we can all chat together about how phenomenal this range is!

Benny and the eighth Doctor first met in the last Doctor Who NA novel The Dying Days, which is sadly OOP and very expensive, and again in one of the stories in Company of Friends in the Monthly Range, which is an anthology of eighth Doctor stories with companions from the comics and novels. I highly recommend Company of Friends: it's a fun collection of short stories that are very standalone and it's the only audio appearance of one of my favourite companions, Fitz. (I would also recommend The Dying Days, but not for how much people are charging for it now.) I would also very much like to hear a Benny + 8 + Unbound Doctor story.
