The Slide (Victor Pemberton)
Starring Maurice Denham and Roger Delgado. A really excellent serial although I naturally couldn’t help but draw comparisons with the later and much more atmospheric Fury from the Deep.

It was actually a unmade Doctor Who pitch, which Pemberton took out all Who elements and reused it here!

It certainly felt more like an episode of Doomwatch or from a Quatermass series than it did a Who episode. Would highly recommend though.

Just listened to The Effect - an Audible original written by Colin Brake & Una McCormack (amongst others) and co-starring Timothy Blore and Nicola Bryant (amongst others). As a fan of sci-fi in general it's not too difficult to pick up where some of the inspirations come from but at the same time it was a compelling and entertaining drama which built up with each episode. Recommended.

A truly bizarre little festive tale.

Alan Partridge’s From the Oasthouse Series 2
On the face of it, it seems a step down from the first series; less episodes, no linking story or any sort of structure. And yet it works brilliantly. It’s the closest we get to truly seeing the Alan behind closed doors and it leads quite a dark path at times. I’m very intrigued to see / hear what’s in store for the character next. It’s unbelievable that they’ve managed to reinvent the character so much across 30 years, yet keeping very faithful; I think Stratagem is the only real misstep and it’s not that bad.

The Road (Nigel Kneale)
Dramatised by Toby Hadoke. An excellent adaptation of a lost masterpiece.

For the BBC's 100th anniversary today, their radio networks broadcast two 'lost' classic episodes of comedy.
The original/extended/restored version of "The Dreaded Batter Pudding Hurler of Bexhill-on-Sea" (I refer, of course, to the highly-esteemed Goon Show) - well, I can understand why they removed a chunk of the closing scene, it's an odd tangent that just gets in the way of what is certainly one of the best episodes, and perhaps the most typical.
The Hancock's Half Hour episode "The Marriage Bureau", getting its first ever repeat since first broadcast in the 1950s, was just a disappointing episode (much as the 'Missing Hancocks' remake had been a year or so ago), and Peter Sellers' greater vocal range than Kenneth Williams rather took me out of the story.

Special Christmas treat - unabridged Anthony Trollope's The Way We Live Now, read by Timothy West from audible - all 32 hours if it. That will be my dog-walking treat over the next 2 weeks or so. This is the only Trollope narrated by Timothy West that I have not listened to before, i was saving it up for these next 2 weeks.

The Sleeping Beauty (1983) Written by (you guessed it) Chris Emmett. Starring Nerys Hughes, Kenneth Connor, Frank Thornton, Maureen Lipman and strangely enough, Terry Wogan of all people. This one marked the last of the BBC radio pantomimes and I have to say they were a joy to listen. I never realised just how effective they could be on the audio format and I honestly wouldn’t mind the tradition making a comeback. Wouldn’t even need to be a traditional pantomime as it seems every other story now can be given the panto treatment. Thank you for these recommendations. I have listened to the other four in the build up to Christmas and really enjoyed them. I only have Sleeping Beauty left to listen to and am already looking forward to hearing Terry Wogan in panto!

Glad you enjoyed them! They’re proper hidden gems, aren’t they? And I still can’t believe how well pantomime works on audio. Would love to see them make a return myself with more contemporary actors or comedians.

Ghostly Stories (2017)
Written (partially) by Joseph Lidster and featuring Simon Callow, Sally Phillips and Dan Starkey. The stories themselves are classics and are primarily read by that modern-day master of ghost story tellers Simon Callow.
But, I don't know, I rather felt the framework for all these stories was rather unnecessary. Rather feel like you could have easily dispensed with it and had the stories speak for themselves.

The Sirens of Audio Doctor Who: The Planet of the Bunnoids by Harriet Green (from Short Trips & Side Steps) 1st Doctor, Steven & Vicki story. I enjoyed listening to it. The author has a good grasp of the lore, especially when it was foreshadowed that Vicki would become a princess & change her name. And also the brain thing called out the First Doctor’s manipulative tendencies.

A first playthrough Doctor Who and the Krikkitmen.Plenty of audiobooks in the backlog...and as I was in the mood for some Douglas Adams...😁 Well..that was good fun. Completely mad and an awful lot was baked into the foundations of Life, the Universe and Everything.. but still good fun. Would have made a great full cast Lost Story adaptation I'm sure! Anyhow...back to the backlog and a very brief change of pace from the Fourth Doctor - a first playthrough of The Scarifyers : The Horror of Loch Ness.
