Granted I've only heard Alex in clips of this so maybe my opinion will change but what I heard didn't remind me of Dorian... I think it's more the fact that his voice is so recognisable to me now... When I hear him, I expect to be listening to Dorian. Which is entirely my problem lol . Cheers Tony

But I can separate the voice from the character if that makes sense.

I have had a really dedicated re-listen to this release, and I think that from half way through episode 2 it starts to lift and become a lot more than the previous opener. Whether this would be hold it's own, and what direction Big Finish decide to take River on, I think will largely depend on how they treat the character, I found that there was more a case of making sure that they had a formula that would win over the listener with the addition of a Doctor into the mix was largely an insurance policy in my honest opinion, and the story I don't think would have made any better or worse without the addition of this element.

I enjoyed the series. Going in I was skeptical about including an earlier incarnation of the Doctor, after listening to it I have to say I thought it was handled nicely.
My cat seemed to enjoy it - she stayed on my lap for the full four hours. Wouldn't even let me to a fresh cup of tea!

It was mixed way too loud. Had to turn down my speakers several notches while the theme played and then turn them back up again so I could hear what was going on when it was done. Yeah, this must have been a mistake - it's not just a bit louder its insanely higher volume than the rest of the disc. On my earphones I have the same setting for all of my BF listening and it keeps both audio and music at a decent level. The mix of the theme here nearly made me jump out of my skin it was so loud. Should have been picked up on at some stage in post for sure.

Anybody want to theorise on whether this takes place before or after Husbands?
I would say before because I honestly think that mention of a screwdriver was a mistake. Plus it seems a bit inconsistent to have Husbands be her last encounter with the Doctor before her death when she talks to 8 straight after.

Husbands is explicitly set just before Silence in the Library/Forest of the Dead.

We know by now that River is quite capable of building her own sonic devices - and she can call them whatever she likes! What Husbands shows us is the first time the Doctor himself ever gives her one of his screwdrivers...

I'm really not finding much to enjoy so far with this release. It is all a bit................waaaah, there is no oomph to it. I think Alex Kingston is great on TV but on audio she seems to have forgotten how to act. The scene in the first story when she is confronting the alien was hard to listen to, she was painfully over-earnest. I have just listened to the to the part in "Signs" where she is excited because she thinks the people of Unity have launched weapons against the sporeship and Alex Kingston sounds like she is acting out a low grade porno, it was embarrasing. I think that if the McGannister wasn't in the final story i would give up on it right now but i am a big fan of the 8th so i will carry on to the end. I certainly won't be getting the next River release and i am now dreading her being in the next Doom Coalition.

Alex certainly doesn't sound like the River of tv but I wouldn't say she's as bad as you say at all. She's playing it quite subdued and in places, yes, a bit flat. I don't know how experienced she is with audio drama though. She may get better with time and experience.

I think this is definitely after Husbands. It actually solves the only problem I had with that story - that River seemed so sure that she would never see the Doc again in Husbands and then being a bit too unsure of that in the Library.
The only thing is this means that any Smith and Tennant stories with River have to be set before this release, making this an odd Volume 1.

I was very happy McGann's part was so big. It still doesn't really justify his central position on the cover art but he was very much the co-lead in that last ep. It retrospect Alex Vlahos should be much bigger on the cover.
I think the third ep, the (mostly) two-hander with Samuel West, showed that much can be done with the Nu-Who properties even when you only have two characters, effectively being a companion chronicles style release. I'd imagine the Churchill Box will expand on this format quite a bit.

Except who wants to see 8's memory messed with again. I sure don't. Never again. It's telling that most of the FB posters pre-release just automatically assumed memory wiping or amnesia would be involved! We could always have the cause and effect role for River in Doom Coalition where she's involved with a subplot that the Doctor later stumble on, after she's left. I'm not sure if fans would embrace them both being in the story but not meeting but I think I'd prefer that to anything too gimicky to explain their non-relationship.

I had real fear of *another* Amnesiac Eight moment in this, so I am so grateful they didn't fall into that well worn trope. Overall a very solid entry in the Big Finish canon and an admirable introduction to River's world. It wasn't perfect, nor was it an all time classic. But it represents what happens when NuWho enters the Big Finish sandbox - thoroughly enjoyable adventures in time and space. I like it better than most of series six of the show!

I'd imagine the Churchill Box will expand on this format quite a bit. I'm not going to disagree with it's potentional, but it was easily the episode I hated the most. I stopped listening half way through it for most the day, and only went back to power through to the McGann Episode. And a line of her's at the end really annoyed the crap out of me, and pushed River into straight up unlikeable.
