DOCTOR WHO - THE EARLY ADVENTURES » 3.1. THE AGE OF ENDURANCEReleased September 2016SynopsisThe TARDIS materialises on board a still and eerie spaceship. Vast warships manoeuvre around each other as both sides try to out-think their opponents, flying into ever more dangerous areas of space. The stakes could not be higher. It's funny how the Doctor and his companions try to be genre savvy by trying to get back to the TARDIS when things get tough and insist that they don't get split up, only to have their attempts thwarted.

I'm surprised that Part One will be released as part of the newsletter - I felt for sure Big Finish would hype up Powell's recast more.

I'm sure it'll have no bearing on the story, but the cover gives off this strange Myst/Riven vibe to it. Does anyone else feel the same?

A splendid production and a superb start to the season! The audio sounded great and I really liked the story, and performances were spot-on. I very much enjoy the adventurous things that Ian gets to do in stories like this.

It's good but its very deliberately paced and having decided to re-cast a character, the script almost entirely fails to utilize it by pulling the "She's elsewhere/On Holiday" trick for 2 Episodes.

I wonder if it wasn't a similar situation to The Yes Men, which was written prior to the decision to recast and thus was written with it in mind.

It was a bit slow to catch my interest, but the second episode is where things really kicked things into gear and had my interest all the way through! Jemma Powell's performance was a bit wooden, but I expect that's something that'll improve the more she does it. William Russell and Carole Ann Ford more than makes up for it, though - this is more of their story, anyways. In any case, I'm really looking forward to the next one!

Pity to have Barbara recast, only to be frozen in episode 1. The story felt "familiar" somehow, though it took me a while to determine why. At its core, it seems to be a reimagining of {Spoiler} Stargate: Atlantis .

I haven't actually seen Stargate: Atlantis, but I think the similarities may have been explained later in the interviews. {Spoiler} In the interviews, Nick Wallace mentions he took a lot of inspiration from a lot of different films - The Hunt for Red October and other submarine movies, as well as The Wrath of Khan - and several others. I could actually see the Khan influences at points.

I can see why Jemma Powell is playing the recast Barbara due to her playing the character breifly on television, but of all the recastings so far, her's is - to me - the least successful. Her acting is fine but her concession to playing Jacqueline Hill's role is simply to utter every line in crisp RP, something Jacqueline never really did. Also the very obvious fact that she is a lot younger than her fellow travellers is apparent here in a way that it never was for Tim Treloar or Eliot Chapman.

As I said elsewhere, I don't feel there's been enough of her in the role yet for me to form a definite opinion. I'm going to wait until next month and hope she plays a larger role so we can get a better sense of her as Barbara.

You could well be right that she was added to this story as an afterthought, it wasn't something that should have passed without mention in the extras if they intended a big splash. We also get both Barbara and The Doctor in absentia which is plenty obtrusive unless we're sort of getting a sneak preview of the recast here. Aside from the fact I'd been expecting to hear more of the recast though, this has honestly ended up my second favorite of the Early Adventures thus far, right after The Doctor's Tale.

I rather liked Carol Ford's take on Barbara, sufficiently different to Susan, the Doctor or her narrator's voice to identify.
