I really enjoyed this story I liked the whole peri vs doctor dynamic And it exemplifies what an excellent job Nicola Bryant does reading these Short Trips especially personifying a 1980's Peri and also a great narration
I found the whole concept of without rules we have anarchy But we should adhere to the spirit rather than the letter of the law message really clever
Well done to Tony Jones and hopefully we'll have another main range ST shortly As opposed to Helmstone & Tuesday which are subscription short trips

No word on any more for Big Finish I'm afraid, but I have several fingers crossed!

I love these Short Trips stories and Rulebook was very good. Nicola Bryant did a great job of reading this, the narration really engrossed me in this story; it was a joy to listen to. Well done mate.

Small technical question - it sounded like there was extra microphone noise or squeaks in my version. Was that just my copy or did everyone experience that?

I’ve really become enamored of the Short Trips range of late, to the point that I’m more interested in them than the Main Range titles. I was especially intrigued by this one, because I had really enjoyed Tony’s essay on his process of writing it. In my opinion, the core of good science fiction is asking “What If?” and then running with the answer, and this is a particularly good question..
Nicola Bryant reads the story and she does a great job. (But it’s always weird hearing her talk with her real accent.)
I particularly like the word choices used, for instance, how the alien is dressed in the “standard, non-fussy uniform” or the description of her “tidy” desk. It’s very economical and the story gets a lot of mileage out of sentences like that, painting whole scenes with just a few words. I love how he captures the passive-voiced euphemistic language of bureaucracy with lines like “I’m not sure the Senior Cogitator has been appraised at this time.”
Great characterization of the Fifth Doctor and Peri. The story absolutely nails the dialogue and mannerisms. Another line I liked was “The male, who still thought he was the Doctor…”
A really great story. My only regret is that it took me so long to get around to listening to it.

Very nice story, Tony Jones . Really enjoyed listening to it. Nicola really did all the voices? She was fantastic. Just make sure you follow the rules. I felt guilty at making her work so hard, and it was after she’d done all the voices in Dan Starkey’s story first!
