So, do we think 4 companions will work? I don't think there'll be four companions.

Wonder if this will be similar to Torchwood episode Adam were they had a companion who wasn't a companion but manipulated events so the characters thought they'd known him for year's.

IF it is William Russell's BF swansong its very good clearly his strength is to stay performing in character rather switch back and forth from narrator , Jemma Powell's alright to keep the flow of the story going, but there's still a clear difference between her and Jacqueline Hill.
The story itself is a tad obvious but very ambitious "visually" for a 1st Doc tale.

Have just finished! I quite liked it! They did a good job of keeping Jospa's nature unclear for a good portion of the first three episodes. There was the early fakeout where they forgot him, but then they in turn forgot Ian, which once again clouded whether he was a legit companion again. Then, near the end of episode three, when he talked about being with them on Vortis, I was strongly convinced he was an intruder. (Though I of course did wonder if they were referring to an unseen adventure). But yeah, very good. I like to try and imagine how they would have pulled this off on television. I suspect it would have looked a bit like the old Planet of the Apes films, with orangutan costumes of a sort, lots of fake jungle recycled from other episodes, lots of fog machine, and some big rubbery bird-lizards. And, lest I forget, Jemma Powell did a wonderful job! While she didn't sound quite like "classic" Barbara, she played the character well. As someone else said in another thread, this is what Barbara sounds like in 2016. That being said, there were a few moments where she was spot on! I suspect she'll get better at it as we go. I think she integrated well with the cast, and, while there was the occasional moment where Russell doesn't quite manage to evoke a young Ian where the two of them didn't sound the same-ish age, but for the most part she was quite satisfactory

I enjoyed it, but I have to say I found the Jospa reveal predictable and really found the character to be annoying.

I enjoyed it, but I have to say I found the Jospa reveal predictable and really found the character to be annoying. The "reveal" might go with that understanding - as a TV story especially everyone would have known for sure something wasn't quite right. I think the story was really more about the mysterious Arunde and getting to know them, than about Jaspa. For me that made for a rather enjoyable and interesting First Doctor story. Jemma Powell's alright to keep the flow of the story going, but there's still a clear difference between her and Jacqueline Hill. I think Jemma consistently struck a really good balance between bringing the character to the story and being her own performer, which it sounds like just what she was probably aiming for, listening to the extras. She managed for me to enjoy a new story with Barbara without ever finding the recasting jarring, so I really have to give Jemma Powell a round of applause here.

About halfway through I made this prediction: Jospa is the Vavidic agent, using the device to get control of the TARDIS on their behalf. The Doctor is forced to destroy the device to prevent this, and as a result cannot get Ian and Barbara back home. Turns out I was right. Anyone think this is a decent visual for how the Vavidic soldiers are described? {Spoiler}

Ian also mentions trips to Byzantium and China, which occurred in the BBC Past Doctor Adventure novels Byzantium! and The Eleventh Tiger (in the latter Barbara comes out with the Kung Fu Fighting song).
