I really wouldn't bother unless it's available on sale.

I thought the first Charley Polard series was okay, although it was nothing special... I would rather have stories where Charley Pollard is back with the Eighth Doctor myself so I never bothered with the second set. Series 1 is definitely worth trying out for any Charley Pollard fans though.

I very Much enjoyed The Fall Of The House Of Pollard it is good to know what happened after the crash of the airship to her parents and also post Blue Forgotten Planet And yep i will probably get the next box set and make a more informed decision of the whole series.

From memory the middle 2 episodes of this box set were the best, and its not a coincidence that they had the least to do with ever and ever prolixity and the ongoing arc. They were also better than anything in the second box set.

Yes middle two seem more character driven.I am just on the last one now but definitely loved Charleys family and the fallout of her disappearance/death

Picked this up on sale for an absolute bargain, but have held off listening to it for a while, partly due to a fair measure of trepidation at itās reputation of being a bit, well, flat.
And, unfortunately āit is a bitā is my conclusion.
Now donāt get me wrong, I love the character and India Fisher is a great actress but somehow most of the set didnāt engage me the way I had hoped. Part 2 picks up a bit and part 3 (the House of Pollard) is really good actually, showing the impact on Charlotteās family of her disappearance... but still, overall, weāre not quite firing on all cylinders. For me at least.
So, Iād say this thread sums things up well actually. If you see it on sale for a fiver though, itās definitely worth it for part 3.

As a side note - what is it with reviewers, they seem to be ever reluctant to score anything below 7/10. Was that an actual question? If so, one of these answers for not giving lower than 7/10 ratings might be the correct one... a) Uncle Nick doesn't like negativity and will turn up at the reviewer's house with a sink plunger wrapped in barbed wire. b) The reviewers really did enjoy every story they reviewed c) The reviewers won't get sent any more freebies to review. Take your pick! So cynical š

I have only listened to this once before but i have played the 2nd set twice before (and i must admit i really like the twisted ness of the second set) it was not until recently that i discovered that Nick didnāt write them(the first box set) though he did the second.I wonder why since the writers are clearly there and did Nick take flak for something he only directed š It was 3 years ago...2018 i listened. not as depressing as the fake German accents on River...you should try. i think when you look at Charley as she progresses through the adventures it would easy to become jaded,as the body count rises, fun?Adventure?Jolly? Am not one of these positive thinkers lol you cannot put a positive spin on Daleks or Cyberconversion so i think its natural character progression.

Here is the problem its enjoyable but relistening confirms it ,now it may be a sign of me getting older lol but you are hit in the first tale with
The-ever and ever-Prolixity The Lamentation cipher The fifth moon of the indecisive torrent Galaxy Brewa (bro0ha? Brought-ha?)9-9-5 The obscurantist Fieldship Prime Virus KX variant 243 Vivarium Leadership Clause Hexagon 13
Know nothing of those but... But you do get something to ground yourself The Jolly Brewer Pub more pub less jargon š and after a few anythingās possible

The second story has none of the jargon and is all the better for it four women lost in a forest on the edge of the world .A forest in Scotland you have me hooked. We have a Charley almost of old but not quite but one who has learned from her adventures with the Doctor, but she isnāt assuming the role of the Doctor. She wants answers, she wants freedom, she is a fighter ...and she chooses life.
The narration continues as in the first story Charley and her diary and it does work to get inside her head.It succeeds where i feel episode one also by same writer doesnāt quite ,the lack of techno speak and to be honest it is probably something we would expect of someone showing how clever they are (hence why i always thought it had a different author)I have the same issues when i read Gene Wolf šor should say when i tried to read...lifeās too short,up they went to the charity shop
the more i look at it this story could have very well served as the opening story Charley Diary-i escaped from the Viyrans via a strange spacio-temporal event...

I must say the third story is the one i remember the most Charlottes family here Matt Fitton takes the baton
You have her family the mention of Edith familiar stuff and Charleys diary(probably) and you get why she has lost some of her glow after all her time with the Viyrans that she would rather suffer oblivion than go back to their facilities. I still think the first episode could have been excised and little mentions put into these tales.Hindsight might be wonderful to the writers lol
I would love the writers to do a forum thread of things they wish theyād done with a story or things they were really happy with.Perhaps If Kenny gets around to writing Volume 3 of The BF COMPANION š
its something i forget that Charley actually believes the Doctor is actually dead during all of this but least he gets a mention and its so laden with Charley lore and history its hard not to love the tale The reunion is wonderful and expertly handled and time and distance has actually strengthened the tale and a very bittersweet ending for the Pollards and their children

The final tale unfolds the mystery the cipher gets revealed as to its importance and its connection to Lottie and the prolixitys importance And the virus importance and its containment and the Viyrans mission is a plot worthy of the Doctors intervention and it would have been cool if Lottie had managed to get a Doctor to assist.I do love a Time Paradox or two or three as the finale suggests. Donāt know why this kind of grabbed me more this time around i guess six months of illness and a break from audio listening may have had something to do with it š
