I thought it was on odd choice - as in, not with the rest of the stories of that arc; black TARDIS, white TARDIS etc. - when it was first broadcast on Radio 4X in 2013. I know it was for the Doctor Who 50th anniversary back then, but on it's own Protect and Survive is only a small piece of a much longer piece of string. It is a great story though.

I heard it in 2013 when they broadcast it for the anniversary. I think it's a brilliant story, even though I haven't heard any of the others.

Not just the bleak tone, but also that the end leads into a very continuity heavy story. If Radio 4 Extra wanted a Seventh Doctor story, then the 2009 trilogy would have been a good choice. The three stories stand well on their own and are all good stories in their own right.

The brilliant "Fanfare for the Common Man" runs Tuesday 18th October till Friday of the same week. See, that one makes sense. Great tone and story, requires no background (heck it's a fine first story even if you don't know the Doc and Nyssa) and is a fantastic concept. And what a soundtrack. Whereas Protect and Survive has a great tone and story (and is absolutely one of my favourite Seventh Doc audios), but definitely is a strange choice as a standalone, being something like Part 5 of 8 or 10 or something in a story arc.
